DIY TEAC cassette tape deck tape echo (2 mono heads replaced 1 stereo head)

This was a 2 head deck to start with. The original stereo Rec/Play head was replaced with two mono heads, mounted side by side. As this deck had dual Rec/Play switches it was easy to change so that Record now only activates record on the first head.
To avoid drilling holes in a nice old deck (it's all restorable) the extra controls were placed in a separate box hot glued to the front. Speed = motor speed. Feedback = the output of play amp 2/R fed back to record input if rec amp 1/L; via a small audio transformer (superior control). The first VU meter shows mike input to head 1, the second VU the play volume from head 2. Control Voltage (CV) via vactrols in parallel to potentiometers.
Pro: two heads gave much longer delay times than if done with a 3 head deck (cheaper too).
Con: cassettes will have to have the head opening modified slightly to accomodate 2 heads.
Here's a little bit more on how it was made with a picture of the cassette too.

thank you! the secret was aligning the heads and apply just enough pressure so that the tape stays close (foam in the cassette).

WOW! Cant believe I'm the only person commenting on this.... This is great. Are you able to give some more detail on how you did this please?

Thank you! well, the basic idea was to fit a second head next to the first (any mono head would do and e.g. old car-stereo tape-adapters may even be a source). Erase head stays in place (but I made it switchable). Then the additional head, and then the original. Rec/play switches are separate for Left/Right on older tape decks so it's only Left that's engagin record. Right stays in play mode. Feedback from playback on the right channel goes via a line-transformer and potentiometer to line in for the new head (recording). This TEAC model happened to have a great motor-control so you can really go up and down in delay time. Oh, naturally the _cassette_ has to be changed a bit, dremel/cut out some space for the two heads, and I put some foam behind (cut to size) This Instructable does a similar thing: www.instructables.com/DIY-Cassette-Tape-Echo/

Hi, can you control the mix/echo volume? Or just the motor speed/time and feedback? Cheers😊

Hi! I connected it so one channel is echo (the playback channel) and the other channel is input (clean) Normally I mix it later..

@@jacobsteel Thank you! It sounds beautiful, just one more thing. Do you think a guitar line driver pedal (with a gain pot) would work instead of an audio transformer in the feedback loop? Thanks for taking the time to answer Jacob!
