A short video that takes a cheap cassette tape player that's glutting the market now that makes for an simple modification to reverse the sound while keeping normal play working too. I've done a couple of these and it takes around an hour - and that includes playing with it afterwards.
I have a longer version that includes a PWM speed mod for an additional couple of dollars here:
• Quick and dirty mod to...
Honestly, it took me longer to do the video than the mod!
To find the cheapest version, go to Amazon and search for
'usb cassette mp3 player'
then sort 'from low to high'
all of the same model has the silver band around the middle - just different outside graphics.
Requires only a tiny phillips screwdriver and something to cut plastic. Maybe a small file and a spudger for opening the case unless you opt for the speed mod.

Okay, yours is the first speed control mod I've found that can *speed up* the tape and not just slow it down - this is a function I have been searching desperately for so my eyes went wide when I heard you pitch the tape *up* during playback. How in the world did you accomplish this?? I'm watching the longer version right now in hopes for an answer! Thanks for your video.

The PWM board drives the motor even faster than the tape player does. You'd have to switch out the PWM board to get the motor to the right speed if desired.

Great idea for tape hacking. I've been using similar pwm boards for speed control, along with 9v adaptors and a 1/4" switching jack to hack into the tape head pre-amp. Great for contzct mics and plugging hand held tape heads into.

Agreed! So much fun in using tape speed and direction for sound shaping!

hey Zen - this is excellent! I just got my hands on this cassette player and have a basic question re the mod. Ordinarily, the tape plays on side A then automatically continues to play side B (so forth and so forth). With this mod, will side A play till the end then play side A backwards (then forwards and backwards endlessly)? TIA

Hey Tom - Thanks! Yes, the cassette player still automatically reverses, and then plays the same two (stereo) channels in the other direction. So to simplify - as you said - it will play Side A in reverse and then reverse direction and continue to play Side A now in the regular forward sound endlessly.
