In this video I cover how to install a Teleflex SafeT2 NFB steering system. I'll be doing this on a classic Montauk 17. There's a few lessons learned here, chief amongst them the fact the steering rod won't go into the tilt tube on a mounted engine also that the steering bezel doesn't fit correctly between the original panels and there's easy fixes for both.

Thanks so much for this! I am a DYI and benefitted greatly. I also have to install a cable block assembly because the engine sits too close to the transom on the whaler 11, and I will need help with that!

Also, what length did you use?

I used an 18' cable, I think it was probably a foot or two too long though

Gday mate mounting the steering rod to the engine can catch you out what they normally do on a fit out is have the engine suspended ready to go on and fit the steering rod then mount the engine ,i had the same problems on me second resto mounted the engine and found i coudnt get the steering rod into the tube so unmount it fit the rod and remount it

We learn from the school of hard knocks don't we? The 13 resto spoiled me since it was set back 5 inches or so. Now I know better!

Was the old steering helm messed up or did you just want to replace it

We opted to just go with a new setup, wasn't to happy with the condition of the original.
