I used 10 AWG THHN RoHS wire from Lowe's for this install. However, the 12-volt power socket is rated for about 10-12 amps. I did find a 12v power socket on eBay good for 25 amps and will install it. In this video, I go through the entire install on how I ran the wires. I went "direct connect" to the truck's battery instead of using the existing 12v OEM wires. IMO, this way is safer because it will not interfere with any of the stock fuses, fuse blocks, or OBD II computer and sensors. To each their own...some guys cut existing wires and/or make runs down underneath the truck (frame rails). IMO, unsafe...but, folks will do whatever they want. I used wire capable of higher amperage, but may not use it to max power (30 amps x 12v = 360 watts). However, it is good to have it if ever needed. There are other types of sockets that can be used (SAE 2-pin, Anderson, etc). Finally, I demonstrate my new DeWalt 20v Max Lithium Ion car battery charger I purchased on eBay...and saved a lot of money vs Amazon. The charger will charge my 20v MAX lithium batteries...best, to have the truck running while charging. Get this (remember my previous video?) I can charge the truck's battery on solar power. The DeWalt charger draws 4 amps...so, it might be close! Thanks for watching and hopefully this helps out the next guy!

SECRET: (if you haven't figured this out already) I remove my Dewalt batteries from my tools the moment I stop using the tool. There is an obvious (to me) "parasitic" drain on these batteries if left plugged into anything. Planned obsolescence maybe? Thanks for this video. I love the other one on the Solar charging of this 12v Dewalt charger (which I have duplicated here in my shop. Thx for that. 😉

Great video and well explained, but you could have made this so much easier (and cleaner) by mounting a small fuse block next to the battery and running your wire underneath the truck along the frame and coming up from underneath the bed where none of the wire loom in the bed would have been exposed.

That is a slick installation. Its always "fun" running wire from inside the passenger compartment into the engine bay. Quite an elegant solution, IMHO!

*Thanks...there were several "colorful" words utilized during this install. Chevy used a hideous amount of sound deadening material/cab isolation in these trucks...snaking wires in/out the cab required a PhD in "Ingenuity"*

Nice job as usual! I think I have that same impact wrench. Comes in handy when you gotta change a tire! Taking off lugs with included factory wrench on my van now seems unthinkably slow to me. :P

What’s the proper way to connect the wires to the battery terminals? As in what order. I’m doing pretty much the same setup as you are just worried about shorting something out when I make my connections. Thanks in advance

my 05 colorado doesnt have a cigarette lighter, but does have two empty holes where they can be installed. could you recommend something thats easy or a good video, for me to install a cigarette lighter ..thanks!

That is what I want to do. Can you suggest on best procedure to do this? I am wiring in my Leer Topper in a 12 volt cig light /USB device. It has a switch as well so I can turn off power to outlet if I want. Just don’t want it “hot” all the time as if my truck is sitting for an extended period of time I worry about the small drain of USB LED light. Maybe nothing to worry about But looking for a hot close to end of truck bed. Thanks

I know it’s a little late in the game, but why didn’t you simply run the wire in a plastic split loom from engine bay down to frame and either through frame or zip tied to frame to the bed? You made soooo much extra work!

I think @Mr Jeff meant why did you go through the cab? That’s exactly what I was thinking. I found this because I’m trying to identify the wire loom/pigtails that were taped up just behind driver’s side of the cab. They appear to be for wiring in a 5th wheel. I was planning to tie all my bed electrical into this wire harness without running wires directly to battery. Other than going through the cab unnecessarily I think you did a good job.

Help me out here.... Ive been wanting to do this install but couldnt find the proper socket setup? the family and I like going to the drive in and i use a truck bed air mattress and sometimes have to use an air pump if the battery dies...... does the power outlet come with that frame where you used 4 self tapping screws on? if you have the time.... could you send me the link to the item you bought? any help is appreciated!

Why would you run the power wires THROUGH the cab instead of under it, along the frame? That makes no sense.

Increased protection from the elements. If your wire is run bare along the underside it's exposed to all sorts of flying debris, water, mud, and sharp objects. While it may be easier in the short-term, if you plan to have the truck for awhile it pays to take some time to run it through the cab and have it be well-protected.

I installed a single 12V outlet in bed and ran dedicated 12GA wire to truck battery with inline 30A fuse before battery terminal connect. The plug powers phone charger bit will note power my 12 V Igloo Cooler (which was main reason I did this mod). Any suggestions? It's approx 20ft run. Too much voltage drop with 12GA and long run? Appreciate any feedback or solutions. Thanks

How come everyone is saying thank you if where here ran the wire is crap! He could of just fallow the oem wire harness all the way to the battery or used the 12v power of the trailer connect lol!

I’ve bought something like that at canadian tire with 7’ wire, but i got the positive wire, the black one is just 1’ why is that ? I got told that basically the black wire can be attached anywere on the steel of the bed truck and that’s why they only give you 1’ , is that true ?

*Negative wire is the short one. Most vehicles are chassis ground (negative) and you don't need to run a black negative wire all the way to the battery. The reason why I did is because of all the "electrical" things back near the bed of the truck...fuel pump, lights, ABS, etc. If there was a short on the outlet...don't want any surges to fry something important. Chevy has MANY sensors that pick up signals on the negative side. Many guys will say it is okay to splice into existing wiring harnesses and then have MANY problems later on. So, POS and NEG wires direct to battery and no "loops" in the chassis ground*
