Michael Costello stopped by the Modamob studios to show us how to make a tulle skirt perfect for a holiday party. You can make this long or short and can sew by hand or with a sewing machine.
You'll need:
Elastic
Tulle
Scissors
Sewing machine or Needle and thread
If you don't have a sewing machine, but want to be able to quickly sew things there is this hand sewing machine. Here is a link to one, or you can find at fabric or home good stores.

I never thought it would be that easy of a process. Looks gorgeous! I'm definitely going to try it :)

What a waste. Doesn't tell you how to close at the waist. If you sew without stretching the elastic as you sew, you cannot stretch the elastic to put it on.

I think using a zigzag stitch is better for this shirt because a zigzag stitch would stretch which with the elastic and a straight stitch doesn't do that.

Okay Michael, I love you and all...and thank goodness I am a Fashion Designer so I totally get what was done! However, you completely threw me off with that tiny lil skirt and then stated it should look like the skirt on the dress form...LOL!!! Please be more descriptive in your next tutorial and explain that yours is just a sample or small version of the completed garment.

You need to also take into account the hip size.....make sure the elastic stretches to go over the hips or you wont get it off/on.

Nice! For the woman before who said it isn't tulle, it is tulle and they didn't stretch the elastic while sowing that's why the stitching didn't fall apart.

I agree with other people who have made the comment that this won't fit over the hips. You need to stretch the elastic as you are attaching the pre-gathered tulle. This would make it very bunched up around the waist though. This is how I would do it. I would pre gather the tulle then attach it to a longer than waist band - long enough to go over my hips. I would fold this over into a tube, then insert elastic. You could just insert elastic into the back if you wanted a flatter front.

You cannot sew a straight stich across elastic as soon as you stretch the elastic at all you'll start popping your stitches and I agree that does not look like tulle.

I was just wondering about that! I'm no seamstress (at all!) but from what little I have researched a straight stitch on an elastic band is not a good idea.

He forgot to tell you that when sewing the elastic you have to pull and stretch it, otherwise the elastic won't be able to stretch defeating the purpose... Oh and don't forget to make the elastic shorter than your waist. When you sew the elastic it will stretch a little and you don't want the waist to be too loose.
@fancyShoes1000

he did forget to mention it, but it wont stretch that much, the material he chose is light weight. it should be ok

Ok, as I understand it from looking at a ba-ZILLION other tutorials on this.... measure the elastic at the waist, BUT when pinning the tulle on, push the elastic down to the widest area on the hips and pin the tulle on, THEN sew. This way, when you sew the tulle onto the elastic, the threads will not snap and break under pressure while putting the skirt on. Make sense?? If not, let me know.

You will have a difficult time pulling this skirt over your hips. Advise/Suggestions: Measure the elastic waistband to fit your waist. Sew however many inches of tulle to fit around your hips(not your waist measurements). Then sew the waistband closed and wrap it around your hips. Attach the tulle to the waistband while its on your hips. Afterwards, sew the waistband and tulle together. Dont forget to stretch out the waistband while sewing the tulle on it.

could you just take the tulle underneath the elastic (that is your waist and then some) and stretch the elastic as you sew to create the gathering; or is that not the same? and could you incorporate that to a double layered skirt?

Is there any way to layer the skirt so it's not so sheer and there's more "umph?"
@ssum92
@ssum92 10 лет назад
Put a chiffon layer on the inside to reduce the sheerness. Then do more layers of tulle for added "umph". Try sewing the tulle to the elastic in opposite directions, Sort of like an open book. Adding a waistband will allow you to use more tulle.

No no to the straight stitch. It doesn't allow the tulle to go over the hip area without the stitches popping out. A zigzag or stretch stitch works well for this.

How about the lining? Still see through even it's gathered
@Marialla.
@Marialla. 9 лет назад
This doesn't make sense. The gathered tulle has no stretch on a straight stitched line, so sewing pre-gathered tulle straight onto the elastic will eliminate any stretch the elastic would have had. Also, he didn't show how it is to be finished. He said nothing about the hemming or even sewing up the back seam. If you sew it up straight and it doesn't stretch, you have no way to fit it on over your hips. This tutorial is worthless.
@deGlamorousLifestyle
@deGlamorousLifestyle 9 лет назад
Marialla He's sewing at the base of the elastic. If you notice the stitch is only about quarter of the way up the elastic band, so when you put it on the top of the band will still be able to stretch because there's no line sewn on there.
@Marialla.
@Marialla. 9 лет назад
Stephanie Udia How does that have any bearing on the fact that the straight-stitched line still cannot stretch? This skirt could not be pulled up over hips because no matter how stretchy the top of the elastic is, the bottom is immobile.
@deGlamorousLifestyle
@deGlamorousLifestyle 9 лет назад
Sewing a straight line on an elastic band does not prevent it from stretching, there will still be a bit of a give because when the line was being sewn the band was not stretched. The band will not stretch fully, but it will still stretch. Since the tule was sewn on the band it just moves with the elasticity of the band. If you come across any article of clothing witha straight stitch sewn across give it a tug, you'll notice the stretch. Hope that helps, my understanding came with experience, so you can give it a go yourself and see. Best of luck!
@Marialla.
@Marialla. 9 лет назад
Stephanie Udia A straight stitch sewn with a regular machine absolutely DOES prevent stretching. It might have a smidgen of give, but nothing like the kind of stretch elastic should have. Even without that problem though, this is still a terrible tutorial because as I said before it did not even mention any sort of finishing, hemming, or even sewing up the back. This video is NOT well done.
@sheadatear
@sheadatear 9 лет назад
Stephanie Udia The majority of articles of clothing with 'staight stitch'es are actually done with a serger stitch that emulated a straight stitch.

PLEASE ANYONE, DON'T TRY IT! You will only waste material and get frustrated if you are not familiar with sewing. He dosen't know what he is saying. First, if you are not using an appropriate foot, the straigh stitch on the waistband will make the elastic loose it's capacity of stretching. You must pull the elastic while seing it with stright stitch. Second, you shouldn't leave the hem under the waistband unfinished. It will hurt you. For prventing that do a appropriated waistband with fabric. Thrid, he forgot to say that you have to close the side of the tule before making the waistband. Or you want it to be open while you walk? And last, raw edges in some kinds of tulle might rip off easily. You should finish the seam/hem

You should probably buy about 3.5x as much as your waist measurement for gathering and stretchiness. Just go ahead and gather all of your tulle with a zig zag stitch and sew all of it to your elastic once again using a zig zag stitch and stretching ONLY the elastic as you go. Then just hem it and see up the back seam with a straight stitch and the skirt should work for you now.

So many people asking the same question but I'll ask again.... If I'm pre- gathering up to make 26" of gathered tulle, even if I stretch the elastic as I sew it, the pre-gathered tulle isn't going to stretch more than 26" to come up over my hips first.... Far out I wish I'd have thought about his terrible technique before I started cutting and sewing, I've just wasted $60 of bridal tulle for this skirt that won't work now :(

Try verry lightly stretchin the elastic as you sew - only enough to take up the slack and add another 2 or 3mm at one time but really a zigzag will work better.

This makes plenty of sense. There are several "panels" of tulle sewn to the length of the elastic. The finished product is again, panels of tulle sewn to the waist length elastic. Easy peasy! The closure of the skirt comes together when you sew the elastic closed.
@elissawing3330
@elissawing3330 8 лет назад
So if I sewed this in multiple panels gathered up, and then sewed these to the elastic band it would work? I'm so confused based on the comments, but I really want to make this skirt! This is the only tutorial with a design I wanted, but everyone's saying it's wrong! I'm comfortable with sewing, but not enough that I know if the comments are right or wrong. 😞

You really should sew a ribbon on the inside of the skirt, around your waist (so behind the elastic, on top of the tulle) because tulle is really going to irritate your skin if it's on contact with it and you move; it chafes a lot.
