DIY unipolar 3D printer part 1 - important design considerations

Okay, I thought instead of making the build episodes of my DIY unipolar 3D printer series my usual 20+ minute creations, I'd do some explaining of the theoretical stuff in a seperate video upfront so maybe the main build videos won't end up that long and take almost a month to get done. This should also allow me to publish more than twice a month as these "low effort" videos only take about two days from start to finish. In this first part we discuss some important things I needed to consider when designing my own 3D printer out of plywood and MDF, like for example how to mount the aluminum angle bar to the wooden X and Y axes - I said I would go in depth on building this printer, and that's exactly what we're doing! Of course I didn't manage to finish half of what I wanted to cover in those puny 10 minutes so we'll need a follow up to cover the rest before we start building the gantry.
Here's some affiliate links* to parts I got for this printer:
5pcs A4988 stepper motor drivers: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_Apv00b
Cheapy hotend kit: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_A217Gn
Arduino mega 2560: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_AnxG2B
Geeetech PLA filament: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DBW...
4010 turbine fan: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_AnUid9
100k NTC temperature sensor for heated bed: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_A9cOwJ
10m nylon coated fishing line: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_9HKabt
Keep in mind I got a few of these items during sale, so the total might well be above $50 now (especially with inflation)
* if you decide to purchase something through an affiliate link I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you :)

I said I'd go in depth on this 3D printer, so that's what we're doing!! If you guys like this new format I'll happily make more of this type of videos!

Dude actually reminds me of Kyoma from Steins;Gate and let me tell you this series just by thumbnails does have a mad scientist vibe to it.

it seems to me that the soldering station is too difficult . 3d priority)) @@ChronicMechatronic

Soldering station _is_ difficult, but what makes it extremely difficult is filming and explaining everything despite not really knowing the next step most of the time 😂 Now 10 minutes into the video I actually kind of gave up, finishing it as a big montage, lol

Your explanations are concise and helpful: your last version is the best one without a doubt regarding the rails. Even if it looks like a compromise. Reducing mechanical interactions between wood and metal is pretty challenging. That makes your project very very interesting.🤓 Which software did you use to design those versions?
@ChronicMechatronic
@ChronicMechatronic 2 года назад
Thank you 😅 I'm glad you find it interesting! I use Google sketchup 8 (the free version) as it's very easy to use ;)

I use Fusion 360 Really like it. Never tried sketch up, but I definitely don’t think it can do nearly as much as Fusion. I also use it to create tool paths for my new 3018 CNC. Oh yeah Ben, what are you gonna design with when your 3d printer is done? Still sketch up? Maybe it’s good, but Fusion is great for parametric designs! Sorry 😐 I’m a bit late for watching. I’ve been busy.

How did you design it in 3d? Any tutorials?
@ChronicMechatronic
@ChronicMechatronic Год назад
I used Google Sketchup 8 (the free one 😁) which is super easy to use and pretty self explanatory. The only tutorials I ever watched were a little series by Matthias Wandel (ru-vid.com/group/PL1472AF7F5872A6A6)
@joetkeshub

Oh! btw Benjamin, watch this guy (a favorite maker of mine) using from time to time Sketchup to get things done quickly... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o_t3PtrcCUQ.html A mix of different tools (or software) helps you a lot.
@ChronicMechatronic
@ChronicMechatronic 2 года назад
Yeah, I don't think I'll stop using sketchup for anything that doesn't require CNC. I actually use a lot of different tools for one job as well, for example my thumbnails, I put them together in Inkscape, but for color correction I use ON1 effects, for cropping the inbuilt windows photo editor, and for cutting out objects remove.bg or even a phone app sometimes :B I know that's not very professional, but it's what I ended up doing since I don't have Photoshop ))
@joetkeshub
@joetkeshub 2 года назад
@@ChronicMechatronic Before I click on it, is it remove.bg or removebg? I'm a GIMP early fan and still heavy user. Never had Photoshop...
@ChronicMechatronic
@ChronicMechatronic 2 года назад
@Philibert Bon it's remove.bg, the AI is quite good most of the time (I only use the free preview version obviously)) I have gimp too, but I still have to learn it which kind of puts me off every time since in these professional programs the simplest tasks are so seemingly unnecessarily complex 😬
@joetkeshub
@joetkeshub 2 года назад
@@ChronicMechatronic Agree. But frankly, I use just a bunch of Gimp features on and on.

@@ChronicMechatronic The biggest issue with those little geared unipolar steppers is they are CRAZY slow (due to the gear ratio to increase torque), speeds are limited too sub 10-12mm/s which really limits the printers. But with that said, they are dirt cheap and everywhere.
@ChronicMechatronic
@ChronicMechatronic 5 месяцев назад
@@haydenc2742 yeah, speed is the main issue with the ones I used as well. Once I have those lead screws installed it'll be down at ~10mm/s too unfortunately
