Hey, everyone!
This HTPC (Home Theater Personal Computer / Home Theater PC) has been in our bedroom for a couple of years. It was purchased used off of eBay for $100 with free shipping. It has an Intel Core i3-2120 processor with 2 Cores / 4 Threads, 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 memory, and a 250GB Seagate hard drive. The computer doesn't have an HDMI port but rather a DisplayPort so we do need to use an adapter to connect it to the television. We do get an audio signal as well aside from getting the video signal. This computer is a small form factor system. It's very compact and hides vertically behind the TV. It could also fit nicely in a horizontal position inside an entertainment console.
The issue with this system is speed. It takes a while to load into Windows. It also takes a while to open web browsers, launch video streaming apps, etc. Sometimes we will notice a stutter here and there while watching movies or shows.
I have tried doubling the RAM but it didn't help at all. The CPU doesn't have to be upgraded since we're only watching FHD content, not 4K. The only thing which could boost our performance is the hard drive. Prices have gone down over the past few years. I remember buying a Crucial M500 250GB for $130 about 4-5 years ago. Now, the average price for a 120GB SSD is $20-$30. Since I don't need much storage space then a 120GB drive would be sufficient.
We found a great deal on this XPG SX850 128GB for $19.99 on Amazon. Join me as we go through the process of adding this drive to our bedroom HTPC!

Just use a 3.5 to 2.5 adapter unless you want both drives in there. I use external enclosures for larger drives.

Thanks for the review. I'm looking at getting one of these. I really wish they had designed these USF machines to be able to fit multiple IDE drives but the intended use is a corporate desk. But yah, heat could be an issue with your setup. One thing Dell and HP did pretty well on the newer model SFF is created good ventilation. They used to have this closed off case that would create an oven inside the case.
@wherezthebeef
@wherezthebeef 4 года назад
Cardboard is not a good idea, not a conductor of heat at all. You're much better off with the drive directly on the aluminum enclosure which is an excellent conductor of heat away from the drive. There are also HDD caddies that fit perfectly into the DVD enclosure on amazon or ebay very cheap, these would be perfect.

Thanks for this video. I have an Optiplex 3010 and looking for ways to increase performance. Using an SSD seems to be the easiest and cheapest way to speed up Windows 10, access to files and the internet etc. Nice attempt at rigging the installation of the SSD!

Very nice video. I have a somewhat same system and like to upgrade too. Your video is a clear guide. My plan is to change the old HDD into 2 x SSD, 1 x 128 boot and OS and 500gb for storage...I have only 1 question and maybe a remark or tip. Why you did not change over to a Linux Mint, its much faster...add the Kodi? A good browser, like The Brave...

Thanks for the video! My idea is to use two cutted rubberringstripes of a bycicle tube around the front and the end of the ssd. Then put it in. It will leave a little gap and it is better isolated. Perhaps ask your local bicycleshop for a used one.

DELL is the BEST--- they use good sense in setting things up so they are EASY to work on and get to... unlike the other fools that make it so you have to have a degree to change something.. I will have NOTHING but DELL.

I'm in the same boat. Same specs i got on Amazon for 90. Looking to upgrade it. I've noticed its been crawling and I had to run a CHKDSK to fix some bad sectors so I know I need to upgrade the HDD to SSD. according to dell's specs, it will take only 128gb SSD. I assume this is in fact the case? Also, would it be worth putting in an i5 2500 and 8gb or 16gb of RAM? It's an office machine so multi-tasking with Office apps and browsing. Or is the SSD good enuff for a big speed boost?

You could use Velcro or zip ties to keep it in place. An SSD is light enough to where you could just let it sit in there without much worry. Sometimes you may find a cheap caddy on eBay.

I also have an Optiplex 790SFF. On the spec sheet from dell it says it only supports up to SATA II. Have you got any info on the transfer speed with your SATA III drive? Honestly for under $400, I have a PC with a i7 2600, 16 GB of Ram, and a lp 1050 Ti gpu. Not bad...
@YakovGYP
@YakovGYP 4 года назад
There is a speed difference. I can't remember the numbers but I think it was at around 300MB/s or so max because of it being SATA II. Even then, it's still a huge difference in speed going from a mechanical HDD to an SSD. The i7-2600 is still a good solid chip!

How do I install an ssd as my booting drive and the hd to install my games ?
@YakovGYP
@YakovGYP 4 года назад
After having your SSD as your primary drive, and the HDD as your secondary, you would go into each game client, like Steam, and tell it to install games onto the secondary drive. All clients have this feature (Steam, Origin, Uplay, etc)

@YakovGYP
@YakovGYP 5 лет назад
Do you already have a USB drive or CD with the Windows installation? If so, press F12 while booting to have it take you to where you can select what drive to boot from. There, select the Windows installation drive or disk. Then Windows should see the new SSD and provide you the option to install it there.
