For future upgrades I recommend Seasonic - it's the manufacturer of those Dell PSUs, and they usually stick to the dimensions. But then again, I upgraded Precision T3620, with a bit bigger chassis, IMO, so maybe I had easier...
@@Sneaky_snekk I recommend the model shown here, the 9020 MT. It has 4 DIMM slots for max. 32GB of 1600mhz DDR3 RAM, it has more room in the case than the SFF model, and your i7 4790k is the max CPU it will take. I'm in the process of building one myself. 👍😏
I worked my ass off on one of these in college, great PCs. So I recently bought a small factor optiplex from ebay for £20. Looking forward to upgrade this little guy and make a storage server out of it 😍🍷
I got my 9020 put together a couple weeks ago and love it! Got a little carried away, did PSU, SSD, GPU(1660s) more ram and swapped in noctua fans. Added a 140mm intake fan to the front of the case. Just painted it all white and am going to put a plexiglass window in in the next couple weeks with some LEDs.😎😅
What psu did you use? and how did you get a 1660 in it? I recently just got a 9020 sff for next to nothing and I've quickly realised that theres not many upgrade options
Lots of "jankys" and "caveats" are exactly why I like these videos. I just recently slapped a 5500xt into an old optiplex of mine with a new PSU and it's working great. Ran into the issue with losing the front panel connectors. I might have to buy that flexible adapter. Thanks for the heads up. Looking forward to the next video!
I'm running Dell Optiplex for 10 years now! bought it used off ebay for $120 and Upgraded Ram to 32Gb and 1Tb SSD Samsung. with I7 4790 and running GTX 1650 Super. Can nearly play every game smooth on 1080p monitor with between 46fps - 60fps bepending on my settings.
I had the same trouble but found with the arm left in, but unhooked from the frame you are able to pry to the out side enough to work the power supply back into the case with a little work without much trouble. The hard part is putting the latch arm back into the notches in the frame. (note that the spring also has to be left in place due to no room to re-attach the spring after the power supply is in place.) I just did it myself.
Good video. Some of those Dell's that have an i3's like a i3 4170 have a smaller/weaker fan on the heat sink. I notice the temps were very high when I swapped out the i3 4170 to a i7 4790 on a Dell Vostro tower (fancy looking Optiplex) and I did some researching. Dell chose to save a dollar on the i3 fan/heat sink models. I just changed the fan to a better fan on the heat sink and then the temps were acceptable.
Alright! Nice build. A couple things. A Corsair CX750M PS will fit with no case mods. I run two Dell 9020s one the SFF (a2000GPU) and one the MT (RTX 2060 GPU). One runs a 4790 at 3.6ghz. The other (the MT) runs a 4790K at base clock of 4.0. The non-K tends to stay boosted to about 3.8 ghx. (very nice.) The K variety stays around 4.3 / 4.4 ghz. And that's awesome. It DOES feel just a little snappier. Makes a real difference in the 1% of brand new games that still run on 4 cores 8 threads but need all they can get from the CPU to feed the GPU. A request if you're interested. THESE Dells are great! But Microsoft seems think they are not worthy of Windows 11. (BOO!) Would you mind installing Windows 11. Seeing if there's an idiotic watermark, compatibility problems long-term. That sort of thing. So we can keep these very capable systems alive and kicking. Because they kick! :)
I am on a 9020 using a 1650 with an i7 4790 via the stock psu and it's working fine 🙂 16gb 1600MHz ram and 220gb ssd with 2 hdd of 500gb Lovely to see ur videos as always
With the stock psi, I added a sata extender as we only get 4 and I needed more for extra fans and pcie pin For using a new case,I added a 8pin extender and 4pin power extender
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that had an issue with the latching system. Back when I cared about how my computer looked, I had the fancy water cooled blah blah blah rgb whatever, and now literally just a Dell Optiplex with the side panel duck taped on lol.
Recuerdo la primera vez que lo ví en un cyber, me motivó a modificar mi Optiplex 9020, no estaba abierta mi sesión pero le tomé foto y ahora estoy desde mi PC GAMER modifacada a mi alcance económico. 😁
Your paste separated a bit, just squeeze it onto a piece of cardboard first and mix it up, the cardboard will also absorb the excess liquid. I once found runny paste bleeding clear liquid from beneath my AIO and was wet around the CPU area..very bad. I run liquid-metal now so no worries.
You skipped two important parts! How do we hook up the gpu with this psu? Also, how did you hook up the 4pin power to the motherboard? You only showed how to remedy the 8pin power issue!
I just recently rebuilt a 9020 dumpster PC. I put in a 4790K and 32GB of RAM to start. For the Power Supply and Video Card, Dell actually made an RX-580 (though it's a standard non-overclocked card) and a 365W "upgraded" PSU with a 6-pin PCIe plug. It does work, but it comes really close to the limits of the power supply. I will put in a better supply and card later on, but it's enough to start for me. The sad part is to some extent, my 9020 SFF tends to work slightly better, despite it getting pretty warm.
For this machine you do need more than 16 GB ram max, 32 is just not needed and a waste of money in most cases (unless you need it for things other than gaming). You could live with 16 GB easily in 99% of cases, with absolutely no difference in switching to 32 GBs, you can also add in a 600 Watt with additional room just for comfort with 80 plus silver rating, and if possible add 2 cheap 120 fans intake and out, for GPU it is good, however you could also have a slightly stronger GPU such as 4050, or the very-strong-for-your-machine RX 6700, which might be an overkill upgrade which might be bottlenecked by the CPU, if don't already have an SSD it will make a huge difference (not in gaming mostly, but rather in getting a fast machine, it's night and day).
I remeber one year ago having that Dell optiplex with a gigabyte radeon rx 580 8gb and it really surpirse me how well it ran the mayority of games. Good old times.
I did. And asked a particular question in the comments below if you don’t mind answering ? My only question was did you use a standard atx psu ? Everyone’s telling me I have to use tfx power supply and they suck. I have already ordered the proper adapter (24 - 8)
you guys are gold. ive always used console and bought one of these for sim racing (acc, rf2, iracing) and hoping with these upgrades push those titles. im a pc noob so no idea. great video man
I have a Dell 7010 and replaced the PSU with a larger one also. Took the latching mechanism out and put a couple of really small magnets on the frame and then the door would shut pretty snug to the magnets.
Top tip for these you can actually drop in a Xeon E3 like a 1240 (not sure about some of the higher wattage ones) v3 and it'll run in a 4th gen Intel optiplex :)) you get that hyperthreading, big cache, and if you do a 1290v3 higher base clock for like 20 bucks! The 1240v3 has a low enough TDP where you can toss in an RX6400 even in an SFF case!
Bought same like this optiplex Last week used. Change the psu, removed the drive cage to make room for the gpu, put gtx 1080, ssd and viola! Runs faster than your grandpa!
Just got an optiplex and was wondering why the USB 3.0 wasn’t working after installing a GPU. THIS WHOLE TIME I THOUGHT THAT WAS FOR THE DISK DRIVE 😭 Thank you so much for a solution!!
Just an FYI for your viewers, the Be Quiet! System Power 10 series of PSUs, from 450w-750W, have the exact same measurements as the original Dell 290W PSU. They fit like a glove. Only drawback is that they are completely non-modular, so you have to do some cable management, but you retain full function of your latching mechanism. 👍😏
I bought an optiplex on ebay, for around 119 USD. in 2016 it is 16GB RAM with a GTX745 and 1TB SSD and its Windows 10. Pretty insane for that price. I dont use it anymore but its a good deal
To be clear about power supply dimensions for other viewers, they should be 140mm X 150mm X 86mm. if a PSU is described as being "ATX12V/EPS12V" that is usually an indication that it will be 160mm long or longer. Standard ATX is usually only 140mm, but check twice. Graphics card length accounting for the hard drive cage. will max out at approximately 260mm for the snuggest fit, but a gpu about 242mm long should be the limit. (for a visual, the RTX 3060ti Fan Edition and RTX 2070 Fan Edition are both 242mm long and fit nicely. Of course, this isn't a problem if you have removed the cage.
im so late to this and idk if this'll be read, but how'd you connect the power to the GPU? I never researched that much and am just surviving off of the MSI Aero (2gig 😔) card from another OptiPlex video, so if you ever do get to this is there a more in-depth analysis of anything not covered/missed in this, including the GPU power? Edit: Despite this your channel is literally amazing, and its the backbone to any PC stuff I'll actually be able to afford so I thank you for that ❤
I bought a mt 7040 with i5 6500 and 8GB I’m trying to upgrade to a graphics card that work’s hopefully 4gb with psu that it comes with I think 249 or so but I have a budget I need it to play 5m form my anxiety I don’t know how to speed up the pc either but for now that’s all I need later I might pass it down and afford a newer one I hope if you can’t help me I would be so happy I asked someone else but that think they are like a movie star thank you for time
Appreciate the effort man I have a sff HP with a LP GTX 1050Ti and i5 2400 My uncle gave me the PC because he bought few of those for spare parts, I added RAM and SSD then bought the GPU. Voila it works for now but I intend to upgrade to a similar system like the one you built
There are some budget $260 optiplex that have a i7 8700 its a 6 core/12 Thead beast and you can even pair a rx 7700 xt with it with a little bottleneck depending.
I believe those Optiplexes are very small form factor and low powered. I’d have to double check but my latest attempts to find new Optiplexes and do some of the same have been of that same theme.
Will the Asrock Radeon RX 7800 XT Challenger or Sapphire Radeon RX 7800 XT PULSE graphics card (2 fans) fit into the case without unnecessary removal of the disk cage? Asrock -267 mm Sapphire-280 mm
That's a pretty solid deal! I would recommend for sure upgrading the GPU when you can, that model in particular NVIDA does not release driver support for any longer.
I understand the logic behind modifying the USB plug by cutting the adapter. However, it seems the far more practical route would be to modify the original plug. You'd just need to remove the clip and cut down the two raised portions on either side of the clip. Then, I would plug it up and cover the connection with heat shrink tape. But I do understand that you can alway buy another adapter if you screw it up, and the factory cable would be more difficult. But, modifying the factory plug would look far less "janky."
@@PCTechHustle Thank you for the great info. I bought one for my office that I pick up tomorrow, then a whole bunch of part come in on Saturday. I am running an RX 6600 in my main rig and love it, so I know it'll work great in this machine, as well.
i did the funny on it, i got an optiplex 790 from a friend. i gutted it, turns out it fits an matx motherboard. so, the only natural thing to do was put my PC in there, i5-12600k, z690m, 32 gigs ddr5, and an MSI gaming x trio rtx 3080. had to remove the hard drive bay and the optical bays, but one i did that, the aio fit on the front, the 750 watt psu fit up top, and i get 120fps+ at 1440p. me and My friends call it the opti-flex
@@PCTechHustle fr the airflow is a bit iffy, but the GPU never hits 70C even with a +150, +1200 overclock on it. the CPU is an OC demon, too. 5.3GHz all core with no voltage increase, it's beating an 11900k by a lot. super happy with it
I just upgraded my fell optiplex 3020 from an i5-4590 to an i7-4790 and now my gpu is not displaying anything, I really need help if you know anything please reply
Sorry dumb question but im new to PC gaming I have an optiplex 7020 that I started with, all I've done to it so far is slap a PSU, more ram, SSD and a GPU. I was interested in upgrading CPU but I was wondering will that same cpu u used in the video work for me? 😅
so to clarify again, can I actually upgrade my cpu from i5 4570 to i7 4790? Im actually fine with the 4570(Optiplex 3020) but I wanna squeeze a bit performance so I could use a 165hz monitor(I play valorant and I can currently reach 160 fps but it isn't stable and my specs are i5 4570, gtx 1650, and 16gb of ram). idk if the i7 4790 will actually work on my board though, and I dont want to waste my money by buying it and not being able to use it because of board not supporting it. And btw, cooling will not be a problem since I am using a tower cooler.
Hey, sorry for being a year late. I have a Dell vostro 3888 that apparently had a CPU failure(I could tell from the power led codes on booting). The previous CPU was an i5 10400, can I replace it with the i5 10400f or even the i5 11400f? I have a dgpu.
One question, I hope you can help me, I bought an 8GB RX 480 and installed it in an Optiplex 1070 with a 650 watt power supply, the graphics card turns on and the fans rotate but it does not output the video, the video output comes through the vga of the plate, in a few words I don't recognize the card, help me
GUYS I NEED HELP! I’m missing screws that screw into the outside of the case to hold the graphics card in place and i need them! i can’t find the correct size anywhere and without them my graphics card bending downward, can someone please help me?
I got 4 (its a long story) Optiplex 1070. I have an I7 cpu, 16gigs of ram, and a 1tb SSD. What GPU can I get that doesn't involve me getting a new power supply? Just looking to be able to play World of Warcraft alittle better, so I don't need a beast, but, would like to get my money's worth.
I got a dell optiplex 7010, i put an i73770 and 32 gigs ram and an rtx 2060 12gb and a 650w psu. At this point I would need a whole new pc to upgrade. So if I could figure out the Dell case wiring of the power button and the front panels I could just use jumper wires to connect them all to a newer motherboard like the msi boards.
Well it’s a Dell motherboard only that these come with, unless you are doing some kind of sleeper build. The motherboard size is standard micro atx if that helps
فI thank you very much because you provided a great help to me. I bought a graphics card and I did not know how to install it because the power adapter does not support 24 pin ❤❤❤
What upgrades can you suggest for a 7010 opti plex or do you think it’s too outdated should I search for a more recent model. Sorry if the question is kinda stupid I’m new to the pc gaming genre😅
My 7010 was upgraded with a max of 32 gigs ram a 650w psu an i7-3770 and an rtx 2060 12gb gpu. I had to modify the case. If you get all 90 degree sata wires you can plug them in and still be able to seat the gpu after removing the hdd cage. I didn't want to give up the front panel usb so I cut out and bent back the bottom of the case making it horizontal now. Then I found a 90 degree adapter for the front USB cable.... if only I could figure out how to wire up all those connections for a newer amd board and processor..... take it from 4 core to 6 core. Double the ram but keep everything else. I should probably mention that the bending of the bottom was due to the fact that I had to put a double slot sized card in the bottom pcie slot which only had room for the single slot, once I found the adapter and switched it back to the main pcie slot it was already too late.
Figured out the wiring and have replaced that old Dell motherboard. The case defacing turned out to be a good thing as the new board was to long for that model case but I got the power button and the USB panels working, now when I get my other jumper wires I can use the front panel audio too.
I dropped in a pcie/nvme adapter for $10, followed the nvme bios hack, dropped in an mvne drive which even though this is pcie.2, us still 3x faster than ssd.. And I/O as we all know is always the bottleneck. I then using throttlestop, undervolted it.. -.065V is all it would take before it became unstable, but this made it run faster while 30 degrees cooler at idle.. You need to do this.
Hey guys so let me explain i have a cosair 650w psu and it has 24, 6+2 and others so the motherboard i want to connect to has 6pin only? Here is the thing: 1) can i plug the 6pin on the 6+2 that is used for connecting GPUs on the motherboard? 2) psu require the 24 pin to be connected for it to work right? 3) arent i supposed to use 24 to 6 pin addapter? (Im having trouble funding it where i am and ordering is not cheap trust me) I want to know if i can plug in the 6+2 pin split that i know is used for GPUs to connect to the motherboard, the motherboard is HP EliteDesk 800 G1 MT motherboard since its 6 pin on the mobo.
The only thing that is a little off is that the 6600 is a 4.0 PCI-e and the mobo only has a 3.0 PCI-e slot. You will be leaving some performance on the table. Why not go with an rtx2000 or an RX500 series card? Otherwise great tutorial.
Solid thinking here but actually the 6600 XT although being a 4.0 capable card still will come nowhere near close bottle necking the PCI-e 3.0 slot. This might be a thing that will inhibit performance on a much higher powered card like a 6900 XT or higher Tier 3000 or 4000 series. The thing I MIGHT actually run into first is a CPU bottle neck!
Unfortunately no you cannot. The GTX 980 is an absolutely power hog. You would need atleast a 500w PSU. I would look more towards new / better performing GPU that also require mess power investment, or if you look at the previous videos I’ve done with the one, you will see the better plug and play options available to you.
Hey I'm a complete beginner to PC building so what do you recommend I change with my 7020 dell optiplex I want to change my CPU and it also seems that I should change my PSU I'm basically poor so i can only spend 200 dollars on upgrades if i can upgrade my cpu gpu and psu all within the 200 dollar range that would be great but i have no idea what cpu is compatible with the motherboard so if someone can tell me that would be fantastic. At this moment i have a intel core i5-4950 and a 1080ti or i think its a 1050ti which ever one is worse i also have a really weird motherboard and i cant find any i formation on it, its called a "dell 0f5c5x" so if someone can help me that would be great (pls i need help badly)
You can upgrade the CPU to an i7 4770 or 4790 (4790 the best). They should be a simple drop in CPU replacement. As for GPU, without incurring more cost I’d suggest one that does not require a PSU upgrade like an RX 560 or GTX 1650. If you go beyond that with GPU you will need a PSU upgrade to support.
