Safe Drinking Water is an absolute necessity and being able to treat water to make it safe to drink is one of the biggest needs for true SHTF, Grid-Down scenarios.
In this video I will show you a simple, inexpensive way to build and use a DIY Water Treatment Kit for the times your current drinking water supply is not safe to drink.

Just an FYI, pool shock comes in those plastic pouches which for short term, approx. a year are adequate storage, however beyond this it is necessary to store in glass jars as the chlorine being corrosive will eat through the pouches. When using jars with metal lids always line the lid with plastic wrap as the chlorine will corrode the metal lids.

Yes, bleach has about a six month shelf life which is why I also keep a bottle of Lugol’s iodine in my prepping kit for treating water.

Make sure when using bleach it contains no fragrance. Also if you use pool shock make sure it contains no fragrance OR ALGECIDES. This is most important for drinking water.

Well done! Lot's of information in this video. When looking at this from a long-term storage SHTF scenario, I'd be curious as to the expiration date of these test kits. I checked on the Dry Tec years ago and I don't believe it expires. That being the case, I store it as my preferred method along with bleach tablets as a back up. The test kits would certainly be useful in any scenario if they store well. Thank you.

The Restaurant Test strips will keep for many years. I don't know how many for sure. I used them in my work for several years and used many of them that were several years old and they worked very well. The Pool Test Strips are supposed to have a shelf life of one to two years after opening. I am going to vacuum seal mine now that I have used them. The test strips would be great for getting the process in place using the pool shock and then putting them in storage. I don't think the Pool Shock ever expires if properly stored which probably makes it the best long term option for water treatment.

I think the strips are definitely a plus to have on hand. When I order I'll search for an expiration date. Seems we came to the same conclusion about pool shook being the best long-term option. I've just never put it to the test and then drank the water. Thanks again.@@ChefPrepper

So what is usefulness shelf life of unopened clorox bleach do you happen to know
@ChefPrepper
@ChefPrepper 2 месяца назад
I do not know for sure, but my understanding is it begins breaking down after about six months from being made/manufactured. So, it is a good idea to test and/or use a powdered form of chlorine for long term prepping. Hope this helps.

You kinda glossed over how chlorine concentration changes in all water with time. You can have 50ppm concentration in water and simply stirring it, it will speed up the process of the chlorine becoming its gaseous state which it does naturally. They even sell open glass drinking containers with magnetic stirring rods for this very purpose. Adding more water just complicates the whole premise of measuring. I've used powdered pool shock in drinking water for years without measurement for when to drink as your nose and taste buds will tell you when it's ok. I'm no doctor but it is logically false someone is going to drink water with a concentration level so high that they drink through the burn thinking "it's fine". I appreciate the test strip method but you can make this in 5 gallon buckets without being exact and simply stirring a few times with the lid off to allow gas venting will drop levels very very quickly.

Yes not everyone will need to test, depending upon the chlorine source they are using. However, testing can be done for protocols/procedures to insure the concentration of chlorine over time (years perhaps) With the knowledge of the concentration one is starting with it will not be necessary to stir the water nor purchase a device for doing so. This will also give one confidence in the treated water. Yes you can smell and taste the chlorine when it is to high of a concentration, but adding water to dilute will give you more drinking water than stirring the water to get the chlorine out to acceptable levels. Same amount of chlorine, but more drinking water. Thank you for watching!
