Oh my gosh!! I did this project and it turned out beautifully! It took a while for me to convince someone at Lowe's to cut the boards and trim...at first they said they couldn't do it but I said logically someone must cut these because who has use for an 8ft. board?? Once I got it home I followed your instructions and I could not be more pleased! You must be an amazing teacher because I usually have very little confidence in myself to complete home projects - your enthusiasm, clear instructions, and beautiful outcome convinced me to give it a shot. My closets look amazing, and are more functional without having to worry about smaller items falling between the wires!! Thank you so much!!
You just made my day! Thank you for taking the time share your experience plus give others the confidence they need to try this project. Plus let others know sometimes you have to be firm with the Lowe's associate to get them to cut the closet boards. BTW I'm a Clemson Tiger and my mom was an elementary school teacher, so that might be why I like to teach :)
@@porchdaydreamer Please keep up the teaching on home DIY projects, I am subscribed and love your videos. Now that you say you're a Tiger it makes so much sense, we are usually an enthusiastic bunch to say the least! Whoo hooo! Go Tigers!
What a great video! My best friend just purchased a starter home for her 22 year old son! What a great project for him to do and build up his diy skills. I’m a handyman and told him he has to learn but I’ll be near to assist. I think he can do this alone. 😊
I’ve watched so many videos on this kind of project. Searching for the right kind. They are mostly cheap things like foam boards. Thanks for sharing an easy but durable option 😊
Thank you! I was just like you and got so frustrated by the other tutorials being too hard, ugly or made out of foam core boards - what? Glad my new take on covering wire shelves inexpensively, easily and durably helped you too! 😁
the Boards add quite a bit of weight to the shelf...then if you put heavy objects on it, it will likely pull the clips out of the wall. I prefer the wire shelves uncovered because adding boards inhibit air circulation , which most closets need more of, not less.
Yes the added weight will probably make them fail. I would rip out & just install wooden shelving. You only need to add the wooden supports to what she bought, make sure you screw it into 2x4’s behind the Sheetrock.
So funny I came across this. I have been planning on moving to this certain apartment building. I happen to know what the floor plan is. I also can't stand the metal shelves. I came up with the same idea. Making a wood cover to fit over each shelf. Yours is a lot easier. Thank you!
I did this last year in my open linen closet. Game changer! I had leftover plywood from another project and it fit perfectly, the front trim was cut from another plywood sheet. I painted it out.
I did this in our new built home. I have no idea why anyone wants the wire shelf they are worthless in my opinion. Thank you for sharing. I did not do the Nano tape on the fronts but now I will add this Thank you.
I have wire cube shelves so that's more complex to cover up. I think I'd use corrogated cardboard covered in fabric with hot glue. Would be nice to have something to cover them up (it's for bathroom storage so not the most attractive to look at!)
Standard size laminate shelving will ONLY fit standard width wire shelves without cutting. Builders use wire because few closets are those standard multiples of 6" in width., and it's easier to cut them cleanly than saw laminated particleboard. IKEA sells rolls of heavy plastic that match the depth of standard wire shelves.
If you want something cheaper and just practical just put self adhesive individual vinyl tiles on the shelves. Because most of us are not concerned with whether or not our closets are aesthetically pleasing.
As a Realtor, if you ever sell your house, make sure they are aesthetically pleasing. Buyers love looking is closets and seeing organization. Good organization shows you care for your home and maintain it.
Wow! Turned out terrific! Would that board allow you to use little trim nails instead of the double sided tape? (If you don’t mind touching up with paint etc)
I hate wire shelves but it’s all I’ve ever had. 😅 and I’m surprised by people talking about the weight limits. I’ve never had an issue so maybe I just haven’t been at the limits? Ty, I was almost entertaining spending $50 for one cover on Etsy. Saved my financial future 😮💨😂
Right? When I’ve had to remove the anchors to the brackets it about KILLS me with the pull force and the wall damage 😂 I’ve LOADED my wire shelves up with no issues.
Sorry! Not sure why. You can see in my video they cut mine and I live just a few miles from Lowe's Corporate Offices, so these stores are closely watched by HQ.
This is great for tiny linen closets/tiny pantries… BUT I want to do this to my big closets and big pantry. How would I do that when those hold heavy things and require those angled brackets so heavy things can hold. I’ve had those wired ones go right through our walls in our closet bc our stuff was too heavy so I don’t know how I’d make sure they’d hold extra weight in a way I could do this easily and with no experience. 😅
I thought through that and decided I didn't want to disturb the tape on the shelves because I had to handle them to install. Plus I found it easier to line up the tape with the shelf while it was in place. Either approach will work 😁
Here is the description of the boards I used to cover my wire shelves: A durable thermally fused laminated TFL finish that is scratch and stain resistant. You can read it here: rstyle.me/+bSv6D8ZWdwesZ_Wglzv9jw
Honestly this is silly- you have now spent all that money on real shelving only to cut it and transpose it onto the cheap wire ones. At that rate for an extra few hundred dollars you could've just measured/bought the real closet shelving and had your husband or handyman install a real closet system that would support much more weight. Now the same cheap wire shelves have to support real shelves along with your belongings- makes the situation worse if you ask me. This is a NO for me.
I installed the lower shelf with brackets 😁🙋🏼♀️ No handy man or husband needed. This was a super cheap option that’s renter friendly. Just a new solution to an age old problem 💡
Sorry to hear that! Can you try a different Lowe’s? They can’t cut anything less than 16” off of anything due to safety guidelines. I had to step up to a really long board for that reason.
