So, landing the DJI Mini 2 on water, huh? Pretty stressful stuff, but if you prepare yourself and your drone... and the waves aren't too big, you should be fine.
Sorry for the framing in this video, I know it's really painful to watch, my feet were wet, it was freezing temperatures, it was my 3rd video of the day and only 11am, and the sun was blasting at the monitor so I couldn't see anything. At least I didn't loose the drone.

Don’t know about water but these are great if your flying after heavy snow, you can land with relative safety knowing your little fly boy isn’t going to disappear into the fresh white stuff.

Well done! You are a very brave man. I wouldn't want to land a non waterproof drone on water. I fly Mavic 2 Pro and never had the need to land on water. I always land it in my hand. Take care.

I wouldn't do this with my Mavic 2 Pro either, it's a little too heavy, the Mini 2 though, does this with no problems. Take care too!

My mini 2 was trapped on a chimney for 7 days upside down. It rained heavy every day. I rescued it by removing roof tiles from inside the loft. Dried it out in the oven. Still works perfectly. Amazing thing.

I do it. Have floats on my mini drone have landed it at sea and on rivers. Have done it at arms length and well out of reach, no problems at all. It's a confidence thing and the shots at water level are excellent especially on film and the wind turns the drone, great fun.

I wouldn’t land it on water on purpose but this is an AWESOME safety measure to take when flying near water JUST IN CASE! I could see doing this in my kayak!

Nice demonstration. I bought these for my Air 2 back in the summer. I tried them out on a mildly windy day. I took off and the drag was so severe, I thought I was going to crash. I landed about 1 minute after take off. I have never tried them again. I would suggest that if anyone uses these, make sure there’s no wind!

Yes, the wind can really drag these around like hell! It was actually very windy when I flew it here, but it handled it very well, I was surprised. Still, like you said, I don't recommend doing this in the wind, it's silly.

I definitely plan to get the Mini 2 tomorrow, would be my first time using a drone so definitely going to practice a bit in some open fields. Being I live near a reservoir, I think this is definitely an accessory I'm going to pick up once I get more practice that way I can get some great sunset videos/pics and maybe some while kayaking.

You’ll be fine Matthew, it’s a little stressful, but fun! Yes, make sure you get those balanced in the sink first, wobble it around and triple check it’s perfectly balanced. If it is, it should be fine.

Love this. Have been looking at floats for a while and so glad I watched this film. Have already lost 2 DJI Mini 2 thru not reading or watching films.Third time lucky am now watching and learning. Want the floats cause I'm obsessed with flying over water, why, I really don't know, perhaps its because I was in the Royal Navy, but that is where I lost my last 2 drones, in water so i need it to float...

I fly fixed wing planes over water all the time and do admit to having fished a few out from time to time. However, the water I fly over is fresh water so I don't have to be concerned about salt causing corrosion or electrolysis on susceptible parts. So I'm curious as to whether the water you were flying over and landing in was salt or fresh water?

I'm waiting for my pontoons and I'll be taking my Air2s to the lake. I know of a few places I can't get to by boat or land and I've seen the 🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟 I'm thinking may need to adjust the yay and pitch speed to make it smoother.

Thanks for mentioning the dji care refresh. Just bought an air 2s (my first drone) and I’m happy to say my drone is covered for 1 year in case of a “fly-away” situation (which Is likely going to happen)

I had a GoPro Karma Drone and while trying to video myself fishing from my Kayak I lost track of time and the drone went into the drink never to be recovered. I finally got a DJI Mini 2 and when I saw this video I bought these floats. My intention is not to land in water but nice to have this cheap insurance. Thanks.

Just been checking, in the UK you would have to have a BSSC license to use waterways, your boat safety license would have to be displayed as well as your operators number , with limited space on the top of the mini 2 you would need a sign board put up so you would probably need a sail boat license as well🤦‍♂️. Forget it, I’ll stick to dry land 😂

That sounds like a lot of work, you're right, stick to dry land. I'm sure you'll be able to find somewhere where you won't be a burden to any water traffic or anyone else to try this out for yourself though.

I'm not sure you would need a BSSC. Have you found something that explicitly states that you do? You don't need a BSSC for boats that aren't propelled by motors. Drones aren't motor propelled boats. When on water using these floats, they literally float. You cannot easily, if at all, propel the drone across the water using motors. The motors only enable landing and flight, which makes them difficult to Boat planes and the like, which can propel across the water using their motors, as well as fly. I've been looking at the BSSC page and haven't found antrhing that definitely states that a drone with floats would need a BSSC, but if you've found otherwise, it'd be great to get a link to I can make sure I don't fall foul of the law!

Another great review Phil, well done 👍. I'm planning on filming some sailing next year from a boat and was considering these floats just in case something went wrong, when landing. I think the wind will be a bit too much for it though, so might just try hand landing, or rig up something with a launch/landing pad.

These are a great idea if it's not super windy, however, I remember this day, it was windy as hell, and they actually didn't give me too much trouble. I'd have them as backup if you're out and about and the wind is relaxed. Thank You!

My Mavic Air did not only land but it dived into the deep sea last August 19, 2021 in a beautiful beach in Croatia and was not able to find it, now I'm thinking of getting the mini 2.

I have the same pontoons for use on my Mavic Air 2. Wouldn’t use them unless it is dead calm and absolutely needed for a planned shot. They disrupt the manoeuvring ability of the drone way to much. Have seen in another review where these pontoons actually contribute to the crash of their drone.

Hi Ken, I have to say, I'm really impressed at how well the Mini 2 handled these in quite strong winds, it's like it didn't even feel them. The original Mini really felt them and did not like them on. As for crashing with these, people don't take testing them seriously, I would not have done this is I wasn't 93% sure it wasn't going to land. Sure, that 7% was stressful, but I was ready to take the chance as I really tested the balance well before I did these crazy manoeuvres. Either way, I don't recommend doing what I do.

Appreciate your time demonstrating this product as I was certainly curious but my drone never lands anywhere let alone water, and if as a cautionary accessory I would be more worried about the wind grabbing and causing a Flyaway. You never want to be that close to the water. 👍

How far did you fly up 100meters? And was payload enabled when you flew over the slide? I flew the first time over 100 Meter today and gosh I was capping myself... Imagine with them float tubes😱

On occasion I fly a little higher, I've had him to his max of 500m to test him out, it doesn't bother him. That is a height I'm not comfortable with as you can imagine, and it's also a very Google maps kind of view, so not really that interesting, I find 100m or lower a really good height for taking photos and videos. When it comes to distance I did test him over this lake and back which was just over 2200m, that didn't bother him either. Always fly where you know it's safe and where there is no air traffic or dangers you could get in to, that's the most important. I took off payload mode just to show how it lands the 4th or 5th time, I'm sure I mentioned it in the video, and then flew over the slide. Handles exactly the same for me with payload mode on and off, so I just keep it off.

I was thinking about this the entire time I was filming in Spain a couple of weeks back. Especially when the app froze and my screen turned black when I was high above the water. Fortunately the drone did its job and was still hovering when I restarted the app. Might still pick this up before my next trip though.

Yes, this is a good idea if anything happens over water, then you can still possibly save it or float it back and get DJI Refresh.

Mind the jurisdiction change!..... Be aware that when you are flying OVER the water, you are covered by the rules (and protections) of the FAA, but when you LAND ON the water you come under the jurisdiction of the agency governing the body of water. Many lakes & reservoirs are controlled by government agencies with laws against operating a drone on their turf. While you are airborne only the FAA can touch you (with exceptions for DHS and some wildlife agencies) the moment you land, you are fair game... even after you take off again, if they can reasonably claim that it was your drone on ‘their’ water. And these orange floats will make it easy to spot & track your drone. And then there is the >250 gram violation if you are unregistered. They could throw that on there as well. Be aware, respectful & cautious. 👍

@@PhillipSkraba Poland... why not. You seem to be an impatient guy ;) Beware of the local curfews. In some european countries, the constraints are inflexible. That would be a shame if you have to remain blocked in your hotel during 10 days. Take a look deeply about the instructions before flying to a country. Back to the drone: I've just ordered a mini 2 because of more flexible legislation, first and secondly because of the stable radio communication. I watched a lot of videos on RU-vid which demonstrate that we cannot blindly trust the promises of the obstacles avoidances and the poor performance of "follow me" feature", even on expensive aircrafts. In the same way, I ordered the floasts ;o) just for fun.... and propellers protections, because I never play with such a device. (Expect not to crash the first flight.)

@@atkore Impatient, well, maybe 20 years ago. I'm too old to be impatient now. As for Poland, I've lived here on and off for 16 years, it's pretty relaxed here, actually far too relaxed, especially when it comes to the world situation we're in. As for the drone, yes it's a great choice as it's got a great price tag, it easy to register and the transmission is excellent. Yes, obstacle avoidance is still not 100% so I don't trust it completely, I fly manual everywhere with that turned off. Floats are good for safety, guards are good for cautious fliers, which isn't me, so I don't get much use out of them 😂 All the best, hope you like the Mini 2 and get to have some fun with it.

I guess DJI will be able to access the logs and see whether you had payload on and were landing purposefully on the water by pressing the down-stick. Wonder if your DJI Care will still be valid if the drone is damaged by the water.

Hi! Thanks for this! How high did you end up taking it with the floats? Wondering how much wind would affect it. I take mine traveling over water 90% of the time, including off boats, and get super anxious that it will sink and damage a reef or animal below if something goes wrong. I have heard from friends that the DJI care doesn't help you with water damage :/

So I have it at about 100m, it seemed to be okay, in higher winds it could be messy. It'll float though, not matter what way it lands, so you'll be able to fish it out and claim Refresh. If you have Refresh, then DJI will straight up swap it for a new one, as any water damage is an instant replacement, no repairs.

I watched this video before and came back to watch it again. I wish I'd have this the other day. I took my Mini 2 to a very nice creek locally that has a drain hole in the middle of it. Sadly my drone is at the bottom of said creek and to get out/ deep to recover. I wish I'd had this as a "life vest". I've since replaced my Mini 2. Where did you buy these?

I did mention in this video when I turned on Payload mode, you were probably on Instagram and not watching 😂 I turned it on, flew around, turned it off. Works exactly the same, it just doesn't allow you to fly like a madman, so I turn it off.
