Fantastic news! I remember we discussed this exact topic under your first videos about DJI Mini 4 Pro. I'm really happy that DJI understands the importance of being able to go above height limit in some cases (like mountain views) and they came out with a loophole that will allow users to decide themselves whether or not and when and where to go beyond 120m limit! Will wait a day or two and order finally mini 4 pro for myself (It would be a great upgrade from my old mini 2)

I'd like to think I helped all EU drone pilots out by bringing this subject up, especially when all the other EU/UK drone only RU-vidrs were too yellow to talk about the elephant in the room. Mission accomplished, let's see what happens in 2024, as that will be interesting too as sub 250g drones go forward. I myself hope to see a Mini drone with a Class 0 and Class 1 label option, so we can choose. That will benefit DJI and the customer.

Bought the Mini 4 Pro on the 29/12 but only received it today (3/1). Was able to activate it and remove the 120m restriction limit with no issues whatsoever even though we're now in 2024.

It's excellent news for small and big drone pilots really as I love using my bigger drones, but I very often take the Mini drones on family trips, so being able to use it as a Class 1 drone will be awesome.

I think the real issue here is that DJI measures the height from the starting position but the law defines it differently as far as I know. The height should be measured from the ground of the actual position. This way it could be used also in the mountains - more easily. Hope it will be fixed, but if it is fixed - removing the C0 sticker isn't a good idea as you lose the category forever which makes flying easier and cheaper.

Don't do that. Take a GOOD look at the DJI site first. After removal the C0 sticker (quoted from DJI site) who bought the drone BEFORE 1st jan 2024 : "They will have to be aware that they will not be able to fly the Mini 4 Pro in the Open Category as it restricts operations to 120 meters above ground level. They will only be able to fly in the Specific Category8 higher than 120 meters above ground level after receiving permission from the National Aviation Authority in their country of operation." So if you remove the label you can fly legally only flights between 120 and 500m with pre-authorisations. Don't seems to me there is a plus removing the label. Only if i'll planning to do ALL my flights above 120m and asking for permission. No, thank u sir. Bty, i think is a nonsense that somebody can think that if a law is adopted across the EU, you can fly above 120m limit stated verry clear with now pre-authorisation only because you just remove a sticker :))

Wonderful. Thank you for the very emphatic video! Basically, this is now a "no brainer". However, it should be noted that in the event of a crash, the new drone provided by dji (DJI Care Refresh) - as I understand it - will again be a C0-certified drone, for which no decertification will then be possible from 2024. What an absurd regulation the EU has created here ...

In Canada we can fly up to 500m, for now. My question about height limitations would be, "How many drones have been recorded causing accidents between 120 and 500m or above?"

@@peterevans6086 According to several sources, by giving up the C0-label of your Mini 4 Pro, from 1 January 2024 it will be classified as “Specific Category” (STS 02), which requires different permits and certificates than a C0-drone. Hence, you can no longer fly it as an Open Sub-category-drone (A1) and - for now - there is no way back to C0.

EASA has modified the text. Instead of “purchased before January 1, 2024,” it now says “placed on the market before January 1, 2024.” The C1 label can still be requested in 2024.

With the higher altitude, won’t that make the drone more susceptible to being blown away due to it being impossible to establish the weather conditions four times higher than you would normally be able to fly? Also would there not be an increased risk of conflict with helicopters etc? It seems like a reckless option to me, 120 metres is high enough surely?

Not if you live in a hilly or mountainous region, 120 Metres is from ground level and relative to the peaks and troughs in those conditions. So if you took off from a hill that is 200M higher than ground around it then you will be above 120M if you flew the drone down the hill and at some stage be below ground level.

Here in USA I always fly over 490 meters didn’t have any issues plus I get better range I go as far as 6km the only reason I can’t keep going is the battery runs out of charge so the drone ends up coming back to the home point

It's out OK, after changing the height limitation to keep the mini 4 pro as a declassified drone or do you need to ask for a new classification. Declassified doesn't change any characteristics of the drone so it should be able to fly in all the same places, same ways as did the C0 class mini 4 pro... right?

It will be a Class 1 license drone from what I understand.

The 120 metres is calculated from the take-off point, not from sea level. So if you are on a 2,000 metre high mountain, you can fly up to 2,120 metres. I don’t see why anyone would want to fly 500 metres above the take-off point; under EASA regulations it is illegal to fly above 120 metres and it is also illegal to fly beyond the visible line of sight. So, for instance, standing in a valley and flying up to a 500 metres high mountain top is not allowed if that is what the purpose of removing the height restriction is.

The question is, if not all new Mini 4 Pros simply will have the C1 Label in 2024. The C0 Label brings no benefits except for no requirement of a licence. But the licence is no obstacle, can be done in half an hour online...So i dont get why they not just labeled it C1 instead of C0...

Interesting thing is that I am in Ireland (South to be exact), I updated my mini 4 pro to 1.12.3, with appropriate drone firmware and I still have 500mtrs limit, no EASA 120m limit. I would guess that DJI considers Ireland as part of UK in inability to geo-differentiate Northern Ireland and Republic Of Ireland. In other words, I have no option to remove C0 label, but I am in EU member state country. Regulators and manufacturers have to get their things together or stop this trainwreck.

@@PhillipSkraba yes, after I watched your video I've checked and there was an update, but didn't install it. Mine is flying up to 500m without the update. Only the annoying "over 120m" message keeps popping on the screen.

What’s the main appeal of a DJI Mini 4 Pro that requires a licence like its larger brothers? For £300 more (granted, a third of the price of Mini 4 Pro Fly More Combo) one could get an Air 3 Fly More Combo that’s superior. What am I missing other than portability?

Thats the main point. Portability. And the Mini has less noise compared to the Air.

For me, it's portability and quality of image. The Air 3 looks great, the Mavic 3 is my favourite when it comes to quality, but for just chucking in my bag and going, it's the Mini series.

This option only applies for the DJI Mini 4 drones bought before 2024, For people who buy Mini 4 Pro from January 1st 2024, they won't have the option to remove the 120m limitation. The information you seek though for your Mini 3 pro can be seen at 5:22, so you get a choice.

Well the Mini 4 will in theory be a Class 1 drone, as for will remote identification, I can't find any info on that, but I'm sure PhiLip will have some.

If the zone is green, and you abide by the rules, it should be fine. It really depends on where, you'd need to check the area you are planning on flying in. I always do.

You can’t, only until the end of 2023. In 2024 that will not be an option, though who knows if DJI might try to work something out with maybe a reclassification scheme for the Mini series drones, no idea.

I checked it and when i request higher altitude, theres a line what says: After January 1, 2024, once the C0 label is removed (without Cx label), the aircraft can only fly under specific category (by applying for flight authorization through SORA) and are no longer allowed to fly in A1 environments. So, means it that I can't fly at open areas (A1) legaly?

Not only Mr Bloom, i have never flown higher than 120 m, against the law in the EU. Maintaining VLOS at 120 m, you must have bionic eyes? All this fuss, cringeworthy, my honest opinion, and i have the A1/A3 certificate. Love your videos, just my honest opinion on the height, definitely won't be adjusting. I can fly practically anywhere with a C0 drone, in the cuty, above people, not crowds, not giving that up, no mountains in the Netherlands. 😉

You see, I fly mainly in the mountains and with 120m above take off point, that is kind of useless. Let's be honest, when you're filming, who can see their drone at the same time, right? I mean the second you look down to get your shot you've lost VLOS 😉 Yeah, the Netherlands are more or less as flat as most of Poland, but I really like flying in the Alps, that means 120m AGL is a must I'm afraid.

@PhillipSkraba Yes, fair play. It's also good to explain the benefits of the C0 label, you don't in your video, not everyone is going get the A1/A3 certificate. And, to have the freedom of flying practically everywhere. Ian in London explains this well in his video on this subject. Anyway, the rules and regulations are clear for everyone. I want this hobby to last, not to be abolished because some have their own set of rules.
