The Mini 4 Pro marks the first time that DJI has brought HLG mode to its Mini series of drones. I was lucky enough to visit Alaska with the Mini 4 Pro and put its expanded dynamic range to the test in the land of light and dark.

Almost every clip was filmed in 4K/30fps except for a few slow-mo shots in 4K/60 of 4K/120. I also usually used AUTO exposure except for the panning/tilting clips.

This is amazing, this might be the best footage I’ve seen of a mini 4 pro. There’s lots of great videos out there but to me this is the closest I’ve seen a mini 4 pro look like a mirrorless or video camera.

I really enjoyed this. Not a nitpicker, just a new mini 4 owner that appreciates you sharing your amazing footage. Inspiring. Did you use ND Filters or always do? I'm not too into color grading/editting so I was wondering if throwing on HLG was a good way to get some good colors for noobs, without having to do much in post? But it sounds like you did still work the footage in post. What is the big advantage of HLG over D-LOG M or whatever?

D-LOG M for Rec.709 not HDR,but HLG for Rec.2020(HDR)

Thanks for the nice comment! I’ve been a strong proponent of the HLG mode for quite some time (back to the Mavic 2 Pro) so glad to hear I was ahead of others on the Mini 4 Pro. Hope you received your new drone and are enjoying it - fly safe and have fun!

Awesome vid brutha man...dum question though...I just got a mini 4 but wont have my maiden flight for a few more days.. When using the HLG, I guess you have to do/add color grading post production on a computer? For now, my puter is outta the picture so I only have my iphone to edit video & pics... Im guessing then that I can only shoot in auto mode?? Thnx for your time my dude!..Have a great Christmas & New Year!

Thanks! No dumb questions lol The workflow with HLG isn’t as complicated as DLOG but it pretty much requires a computer. I’ve filmed in HLG and sent it straight to my phone but it’s never great so just keep it in the normal color mode for now until you get your computer back and want to dive in deeper (also make sure you have an editing program that supports HDR video). And you can shoot in manual or auto - just have to keep the Color Mode (found under the three dots > camera) set to “Normal” for video. Safe flying and a happy holidays to you too!

Amazing landscape shot in wonderful lighting. I have a question regarding Mini 4 pro HLG footage, All the footage shows burnt out white/highlights which by default in HLG is suppose to retain very well. Did you over expose or did you correct highlights in FCP during grading? I ask this because I intend to buy Mini 4 pro specifically for HLG purpose but most HLG footage being shared using mini 4 pro shows highlights burnt off even when viewing on 1000nits screen.

Thanks and apologies for my late reply. I did color correct the footage in post to push the peak brightness close to or over the max brightness in HLG. This is because otherwise it will often look dull and very similar to the standard SDR video. It’s a bit subjective how one color grades video. Personally I have found the look I like is pushing the HDR clips where there’s an actual light source in frame to the point the it starts to blowout and on ones where the brightest thing isn’t a light source (say the shot of the creek where the water is the brightest thing in frame) just slightly expanding the highlights.

Very nice footage! I have a few questions about your camera settings on the Mini 4 Pro. Do you use nd filter, if so which brand? Do you use D-log M? In which fps are your clips shot at?

Thanks! So to answer your questions: 1) I don’t use an ND filters except maybe 1% of the time when I’m dealing with prop shadows or want to do long exposures 2) I’ve used D Log M in the past but generally shoot either HLG (like this video) or normal mode 3) I shot in either 30fps or 60fps (slow mo) for this video but 24fps is also fine

beautiful shots! what an amasing place. I really like the soundtrack and the video they both match perfectly. Mini4pro footage to my eye personally looks tiny bit worse than Air2s, and also mini3pro , . But none the less shots are amasing.

I totally notice the diff between "free" "canned" music and something immersive & complimentary... being that Im a musician of > 50 years (yikes). Eventually I will be creating much of my own background music myself fortunately.

Hi thanks! Shot it all in HLG mode 4K/30. Edited in FCPX in an HDR timeline (HLG Rec.2020) and exported as an HEVC 10bit file so it could support the HDR.

Yes, but it’s just the same as what a TV does to convert SDR content to HDR. All you need to do is drop the SDR D-Log M footage into an HDR timeline, convert the brightness levels to match and export it in HEVC 10bit or ProRes and you’ll have HDR video.

On the Mini 4 Pro, Air 3, Air 2S, and Mavic 3 series you shoot HDR video by switching from Normal or D-Log to HLG mode in the video settings. Note: HLG video does require a bit more processing in post so don't use if you just want to post from your phone.
