DJI Mini 4 Pro - Don't Buy if you Like Getting High (in the EU)

DJI Mini 4 Pro - amzn.to/3PWwQ5g DJI Mini 4 Pro Max Height for a Class 0 drone, it's kind of a problem if you want to use it to get pro shots in hard to reach places in the EU. My friend Philip Bloom just let me know, his drone, being in the UK has 500m max height. So US and UK seem good to go.
DJI - "Our DJI Mini 3 Pro has been designed in line with the current draft C0 standards, which are due to be finalised in the future. We are currently conducting the certification test under these draft standards and, after being able to obtain a class identification label, will inform customers of how to certify their drones. At present, any drone under 250g is subject to the same rules and regulations regardless of whether or not it holds a class identification label, which is not yet available. Moreover, all DJI drones can be used in the Limited Open Category with certain restrictions until 31 December 2023 and beyond." - So basically, it might or might not get a 120m Max Height Update, and if it does, I'd probably not update it.

OK. So this is what’s happening. From April 2024 sub 250g drones in the EU will need to carry the C-0 label. The C-0 classification does indeed lock you to max 120m in Europe. In the UK the regs are different. If you are filming in a hilly or mountainous area then the 120m is from the earth’s surface so you manually override the max height as it not locked. You can set it as high as 500m. But the rest of the time you are supposed to be no higher than 120m. So due to the rules changing in April 2024 DJI have just put the limit in now. I know, it would be great if they could wait. Here’s the thing, by April 2024 all new Mini 3 pros sold (they will still sell them) will have this same limitation. Any new firmware that is released for your current Mini 3 pro will also have this limitation added. You will have the choice not to install it though. That means if there’s any other firmware improvements you won’t be able to take advantage of them. But at least you have the option. This is JUST for Europe though. If you fly in the UK or USA you can set it to max 500m. Likewise if I take my UK Mini 4 Pro to Europe I will no longer be able to set a higher altitude. So hang onto your Mini 3 pro if you are in Europe for when you need to fly over hills, mountains etc! Or just get an Air 3/ Mavic 3! 🙂 This info is direct from my contact at DJI.

Good stuff, thanks for the update Philip 🤜🏻🤛🏻 I think Mini 4 Pro/Mavic 3 sounds like a good duo to have in the kit bag! It would be nice to travel just with the Mini 4 Pro, but it seems like the EU elite have twisted DJI's arm on this one, much like Apple's with the usb-c port.

I’ve spoken to DJI and from 1st of Jan 2024 all mini drones will be restricted to 120m via a firmware update. It will also apply to drones from outside Europe / UK. They will also be allowing retrospective Class 0 of mini 3 and earlier. I’ve posted the conversation on Reddit r/DJI
@PhillipSkraba
@PhillipSkraba 11 месяцев назад
Yes, that's correct, my DJI contact emailed me today and told me that it goes live on the 1st January 2024, so no doubt updates for the previous Mini series drones will hit then, I'll probably be skipping those updates to keep the 500m max height, it at all possible. It only applies to the European Union though, and no doubt will come to the UK soon after, but the US will sidestep this, they have totally different regulations.

yes, i know what you mean, I never send the drone up that high. Just pointing out that dji will unlock a drone if you ask them to. There are some very large mountains in British Columbia so if doing active track in a car while driving through the mountains, elevation can change so drastically without even really being away. that is just the road, not counting the actual mountains around the road. The C-0 classification does indeed lock you to max 120m in Europe, I can see UK will follow! - CAA Rules in the UK are all over the place at the moment and most of the UK rules are mirrored from the EU. - CAA UK Rules say must have manual control of your drone at all times? - The we have all these options i.e. automatic waypoints, quick shots and active track etc. So to me using any off these options with any DJI Drones is illegal? - Remote ID! Well, we'll be tracked and data gathered and fined just like cars we''ll be getting fines in the post for flying 2 miles away, too hight, too fast etc. - DJI do a great job, but like others say, they are getting like Apple - new drone so need new controller, batteries etc. - DJI Care Refresh? one or two years, and then small payments to repair! - Why not if you have ie. Mini 3 pro, Mini 4 Pro, air 3, mavic etc. Just pay around £100 a year for all drones together insurance, instead of DJI Care Refresh for each drone costing hundreds? - Anxiety whilst flying, Drone Assit says you can fly here, then get where ever just to see signs saying NO DRONE popping up everywhere, am I going to be fined, arrested etc. - DJI Mini Pro's are great but try and fly one over the cliffs of dover in Average Wind Speeds lol Bewared! Sorry, I could go on and on with this list, but people just need too know, I for one can not see me flying in 2024/2025 nerver mine buying a drone.

I just bought the Mini 4 Pro. My first drone ever! I really like it and can't wait to fly more! I knew about the 120m limit but it was the best option for me at the moment to get the Mini 4 Pro. I saw in the controller that you can lift the 120m limit but you lose the C0 label of the drone and CAN NOT get it back after this. I am not sure what that means exactly ... But basically you have to apply for flight permission and can no longer fly in A1 environments. So that is a bit confusing.. Haha 😶

It might be technically possible to fly above 120 meter with an old drone like my DJI Mavic Air 2, but I would be breaking the law, and the DJI software will warn about it. So in real life use cases where you follow the law, there is no difference between Mini 3 Pro and Mini 4 Pro.

The measurement of distances shall be adapted accordingly to the geographical characteristics of the terrain, such as plains, hills, mountains." 120m is correct, but AGL. All open category drones (C0 up to C4) must always remain in direct sight. For something as small as a Mini, 120 m might already be a challenge in that regard. Flying over „to the next valley“ sounds very much out of the question to me anyway. The Mini‘s advantage is that it can be flown near people without too much investment into attaining a license. If you want to go farther away, get a larger drone and a license to use it. Please also note that sailplanes regularly keep far less vertical distance to the ground than 120 meters, in order to use ridge lift.

Everyone is basically complaining about having to comply with a law which has been in place for years in the EU. Interesting. Also, btw, the legal 120m limit is set from ground level, not sea level. This should allow any A1-A3 drone to fly above a mountain legally, because a mountain top is the reference ground level at that point.
@PhillipSkraba

Thanks for sharing this information. I’ve commented on many other channels for them to confirm if the slider is locked to 120m due to C0 classification but have not had any responses. Well, there is no doubt a reason why other channels haven't covered it, I however thought it would be a good topic to discuss as it really isn't DJI's fault, they've let us reach the sky if we wanted, it's all down to the EU regulations. The Air 3 looks like an awesome drone, have fun with it!

Damn! I live by a hill (about 50 meter higher than my back yard) and frequently fly above that hill from home. Easily within VLOS. Bu now I can´t go to 120 m above ground level without walking up there every time? How stupid and useless! Why useless? Because if I fly in the other direction there is descending terrain which makes me well above 120 m AGL if I go to 120 m and fly straight ahead. So the limitation in the drone will not prevent flying outside of what is allowed...
