Kyle, this was seriously one of the best reviews I've ever seen. Pertinent, to the point, and covered all the pros and cons that you would want to know about. Not a lot of filler crap that just extends the video that doesn't really matter. Thank you so much for creating this video. My biggest frustration with GoPro has been all the buggy issues. It's been one thing after another for years and their batteries don't last long at all. When I'm ready for a new camera I think this is the one. Thanks again, you and April keep up the amazing content!
I'd go with the DJI just for the larger sensor size. That'll give you better image resolution, dynamic range, and depth of field. The footage in your video looked better than the GoPro -- just look at the blues in the ski, plus the dynamic range in the shadows. All the additional user interface benefits make it a no-brainer IMO. Very nice video and extremely helpful. That's for putting it together.
Hey Everyone! Hope you enjoy the video comparison. If you have any questions at all throw them in the comments and we will do our best to get to them! Here is a link to the website as well for any spec info! Link to Osmo Action 4: click.dji.com/AERBHDNxsKJSXftpUckTkw?pm=link
Great deatiled review. I have multiple GoPro's, but I'll now be switching. In the comparison videos the GoPro looks much softer in details and clarity. IMO the ease of mounting with the DJI is a huge deal. The audio is also substantially better, too. You didn't go into it, but not having to use the GoPro media mod, longer battery life, and so many QoL updates makes this the best action camera, IMO.
Love how you did the best comparison between the Hero 11/Action 3/Action 4 on RU-vid. Incredible video man - thanks for all the work you put into it. Such great points - never heard anyone talk about the Custom modes and the voice feedback and how it's useful.
Great comparative video. I caught my eyes watching the DJI side of the screen almost every time the screen was split between the two. I think the colours were brighter/warmer most of the time and the difference between the two in low light situations were negligible. Sound was WAY better. I'd buy the DJI right now if I could!
Yeah sound quality was the biggest difference I noticed. less wind noise and clearer louder voice. The Picture quality seemed to have have more detail too. More obvious when the full screen was shown
I was wondering how your health/heart was doing, I'm sorry to hear you're still having problems. Don't feel the need to apologize for that at all! God bless you guys and thank you for all you do!
Solid test bro. I like the 4 and definitely an improvement over the 3. Audio best on the 4. Wide field view is better. The physical attributes of the 4 are for sure superior to the GP. Magnetic mounting alone would make me buy the Os over the GP. Would be great to see a good overview of your fave Boise area and other ID trails. What are best blues, blacks, tech, flow, DH, etc? Want to visit and ride!
Thanks Ricardo! Yeah if you do visit you have to ride #1 Eagle Bike Park, #2 Rock Island Trail - Table Rock, #3 Dry Creek Top to Bottom Shuttle, #4 Bogus Basin Gravity park for sure!
Great test, Kyle. Appreciate it. From a PQ standpoint, it's hard to tell without looking at files directly instead of through the wonderful lens of YT compression/conversion, but I'd give the edge to the DJI in this scenario. The mounting system and UI speed look really, really nice -- especially for someone like me who is still using a Hero 9 (I don't use it enough to justify a new camera every year). Of course, it will be interesting to see what GoPro does with the 12 which is just a few weeks away from release. We'll see if the 1-inch sensor rumors are true. And never apologize for the ebike, says the guy who just bought one. 🙂
Thanks Jason! Yeah i am excite to see what the Hero 12 brings as well. The RU-vid compression is rough too. To be honest though when looking at the full quality files they look super similar. I would just give the slight edge to GoPro in the low light stabilization but Action 4 is much more enjoyable to use.
@@AprilRideMTB At this point, I'll take a little more PQ performance in low light over stabilization. But I'm old and remember when any level of stabilization required gadgets weighing the equivalent of a thousand action cams. And if the performance is 95% there compared to the GoPro, the easy-of-use pushes it over the line.
15;42 Exactly. I have an Osmo Action Camera and the adapter for the audio fits "somewhat loosely" into the side of the camera. Unfortunately, sometimes it gets a wee-bit loose and then the mic no longer works. Thus, when I'm using it, I have to squeeze the mic to the camera and make sure I see the little mic icon before I start talking. Frustrating. Does this new Action 4 have that same issue? Does the mic adapter stay in place despite (for example) riding a bike over rough roads? In a perfect world, you wouldn't need an adapter...the camera's own mic would be enough. I'm always curious how some people get great audio and then realize that they are wearing a mic adapter. The frustrating part is that it's hard to be spontaneous with the camera and get good audio.
The only thing that kept me from going with DJI when I bought my GoPro 11 was the lack of GPS. I like how simple it is to throw the speed sticker on my footage so I have one more piece of data when I’m reviewing.
Actually it’s like voice on the right and wind on the left. What was the audio settings, and did you have wind reduction mode on? Maybe that’s what caused the issue?
I love seeing all the competition for GoPro lately. I recently got an Insta360 One RS, as I like the modular design to be able to sometimes be an action cam, and sometimes be a 360 Camera, but I think DJI are doing great things, especially when it comes to the price point of the 3
Yeah the competition is really fun to see! I am excited to see what insta360 and GoPro bring to the table next. At the end of the day we will keep using the Action 4 for now since its so easy to grab footage with. Im excited to see if the 3 price point drops even more now that the 4 has come out.
We are full time GP10 users, usually always upgrading to the new model. But we have had so much issues with freezing (just by using quick capture) overheating or the camera shutting down at 30% when its cold outside that the time has come to look for another options. DJI might be our next camera, will wait to see what GP12 has to bring
My first time buying an action cam and since the GP12 release is in the corner, I might as well wait til September to decide which to buy. The thing is, if the GP franchise has no new action cam release for this year, deciding is no brainer-- I'd definitely pick out the OA4 over the H11.
Thanks for that review - succinct and yet detailed. I loved the end part when you said about the DJI "I love using it ... I'm ready to have fun"... I'm so new to all this action camera stuff and really appreciate the info and footage you create. 🥰
Hi Kyle, many thanks for sharing your great video comparing the 2 cameras. I bought an OSMO 4 and I am curious to know if the self adhesive helmet mount is safe with regards to no detachment
nature's beauty in every frame! i'm from Malaysia and I wishing to ride those trails and soak in the adventure one day! ur content is consistently great, keeping me hooked!
Excellent comparison. Finally someone who mentions in video a problem that I had already noticed in other videos and that is the problem with DJI stabilization in slightly dark environments. this is a defect that puts Gopro on a much higher level.
Great comparison. DJI audio 👍🏻 DJI easy mounting options 👍🏻the angle is one of the biggest points I found here, hate having to check and adjust over and over again with the GoPro. How are the download times and file sizes for the DJI?
great video, we dumped our GP's, we are using the Action 3's and our Insta360 One RS. this combo is way better as they JUST WORK without burning battery time futsing around
RU-vid compression doesn't do it justice but if we compare A3 and A4, it's a big improvement. As for Gopro comparison, A4 did a better job on the colour and audio side, the rest are at par w/each other, heck, Action 4 has more detail on the shadows because of the colour production.
Very good review Kyle!! I like the DJI footage over the GoPro, the audio also sounded better but ... I guess it would maybe depend a bit of the mic location versus speaking location (mouth) so maybe it be worth while to switch them around on your helmet setup and do it again.
Very thorough review. I enjoy using GoPro 11 for its high bitrate raw footage's potential for color grading. DJI has come a long way. Really like their general UX and the white balance sensor, which made Action series easier to use. Hope guys at GoPro can wake up and work harder. Competition is always good for users like us. Wait, we are comparing DJI's freshly released product with GoPro's last generation?😂
Thanks for this fine review. Untill now I used a Gopro Hero 5 for my MTB video's, on a chest mount and was thinking of buying a Gopro 12, but now I think I go for the DJI Action 4. Do you know if the action 4 can be connected to the Gopro chest mount?
Great video as always, very good and fair review, I have been using the action 3 for 18 months and will definitely be adding an action 4 to my gear. As a foot note never apologise for using an electric bike I don’t know why people think its cheating I have come home just as wrecked as I used to but have done nearly twice the mileage and had twice the fun.
Bringing new products up and reviewing them is a good thing I myself don't use either but my opion would be price and options , they are pretty close , simple is good of course , durability, Kyle good demo
I always like the image quality of the GoPro more against any action camera, and i think it would be forever. Even if sometimes other brands are a little better in some aspects, Its like you prefer to live in the world that the GoPro capture rather than the others. Its just more pleasant.
Color density of the Action 4 seems deeper and true to natural. Kyle hang in there with your physical condition ebikes are basically the same on the downhill. The fun part😅
@Kyle & April - Ride MTB YOU CAN CONNECT TO DJI MIC DIRECTLY! You can even stop start recording with button on the remote microphone. New software allows it.
Bigger sensor does tend to mean larger dynamic range, but DJI and insta360 also tend to have a more open aperture so they do better in various light conditions but might still get blown out going directly in to the sun. At 3:10 going in to the sun they look pretty equal which is nice because that's where previous Actions suffer.
A moment of silence for those who bought the Dji Action 3 recently. 😅Nice comparison! The GoPro 12 got leaked yesterday. It will come with a 1" sensor capable of super slow motion 4K @240 FPS and a bigger screen. I'm gonna wait till it releases next month and see which one to buy.
Both looked good…my overall leaning here is the GP only as I thought the stab and colors slightly better (latter is subjective). That said, my use would be more hiking focused so doubt the stab difference would even matter and better low light in forest areas a big plus. Functionally a clear win for the 4. Appreciate the video!
For many reasons I chose the DJI OA4 as my first action camera. I haven't used it that much yet, but I already love it. In this video is clear that the DJI is the better of the two, but wouldn't it be more fair to compare it to the Hero 12?
Of course they come out with a 4 like 3 weeks after I get the 3! My only gripe with the Action 3 is the low light stabilization can do some weird stuff.
Thanks a lot for this review. I bought a GoPro11 black: basic Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity issues, online support would simply *delete* my requests (!!!) to silence issues (rather than fixing them)... I just returned it after 5 days of frustration and rather live with my old Garmin Virb XE which despite its age, never had connectivity issues. It looks like GoPro's bullish approach is finally heading to an end.
I paused this at 9:42 before I hear your comments...... If you go back to the DJI3 review you did, I generally thought that was better than the GP11. This DJI4 is WAY better, IMO. The sound is clearly superior to the GP (with or without windbloc). The colors are better (but I have a caveat.....what does better mean? Does it look more colorful? Yes the DJI4 has superior color thus far in the video.....BUT.....(and does this matter)...Is it what you saw with your eyes??? (So is it colorful for colorful sake, or is it more realistic). I certainly think the up-close detail in the trail surface is better with the DJI4. I think the overall smoothness of the video capture is pretty similar, though the DJI seems to have better edgework if you, as a viewer, are watching the detail that is closer to the rider (I've always felt the GP was kind of blurry in this area).......In the grand scheme of things, you probably can't go wrong with what ever you choose. You're gonna have to make some "fixes" in editing no matter what. Go with what you think is best and just worry about continuing to provide the great content you do!!! (If you ever pass through St. Louis and need an easy, old man ride, let me know!!! We have some fun trails in the area) Edit - After your comments - I'm shocked that DJI did not Bluetooth enable this camera to work with their own mic!!!! I agree.....That would be the game changer at this point. (I see your concern with some of the stabilization. But, I really didn't notice it watch the first run through of this video)
I choose DJI over GoPro. GP shady company last few years. After GP 6 it went to hell. They dont care about previous versions. Last few models had serious flaws that they NEVER updated. They also have very shady subscription model to acess application features. DJI on the other side + battery life + same or better imaqe guality and HDR + bigger FOV + it works, no freezing. IT WORKS FLAWLESSLY + the controls are much quicker and reactive (qick record, turning on, off etc), the touch screen reacts on command + magnetic mount + you can connect external microphone via USB-C or DJI microphone dicectly via bluetooth + quick charge to 80% at 18 minutes.
Thank you for this thorough review! I am on the lookout for my first action camera to accompany my Insta 360 x3 and it's sounding like I might just have to get this over the Hero 11 Black... I'm about to invest in a gravel bike (forbidden words in the MTB community :o) and want something to record my pov rides and multi day trips on 2 wheels so this sounds great!
Good comparison! The DJI Osmo Action 4 definitely has better image quality in every aspect, i prefer the colours as well from the 4 over both the 3 and the gopro 11. Only thing that i wasnt a fan of is that the 4 footage looked a little more choppy over the 11 which looked smoother. Might fix it by lowering to 24fps rather than the 30 mentioned?
Action 4 is much better at video and audio quality. Video compression, colors, mic wind protection are much better than GoPro, even with RU-vid compression. It's quite obvious that a bigger CCD will give you that image quality, but it's a bit harder to stabilise. Still think that a final result after editing will be better than GoPro.
yeah i think the audio is significantly better and the video looks just as good if not 5% or so better. We have been really impressed and honestly just as long as it doesn't over heat and have bugs that alone makes it worth it for us!
Decent review, Fella. I have been sitting on the fence up until now but, the Action 4 looks like getting my vote. I also liked the lack of "please give a thumbs up like and subscribe" pish so I have duly done so - THANK YOU
Kyle, that is great review! This 4K somehow is in high bit rate, that YT lately was s$$ng users, but even with 600Mb ISP link, I need to wait as it ulploads. YT sucks with their disabled caching. :(
Yeah i'm really hopeful too! The hypersmooth is so good that it will be hard to compete with. The DJI sensor does go up to 12800 iso though so hopefully with that EIS priority mode they will be able to fine tune things a bit more too.
Hi! I love the vids and I’ve been trying to learn the manual but haven’t been able to pull my front wheel up to my balance point. Am convinced im too light to do it. Any tips?
Did you get paid or gifted cameras for promotion? I still noticed a shade issue with the A4 though it is improving. Also, this explains what I've been seeing in some other videos in low lighting. But I have to admit, the color is brighter on the A4.
Did you turn on wind noise reduction on Action 4 for the sound quality because I did not hear any wind noise on Action 4! My question is do you still need wind Muffler on Action 4 or is good without it?
Hi, Great Review. I'm new to all this and have been using a Go Pro 11mini. Its OK, very good quality video and great stabilisation but.... it overheats and switches off every 10-12 minutes and the battery lasts only about 40 minutes at most. Worst of all I cannot charge it while it is filming... DO you know if the DJI can charge while Recording? Thanks
For me this looks like the first big jump in terms of non-360 action camera image quality since the GoPro Hero 9 Black (and maybe all the way back to the Hero 7 Black depending on how you look at it). I'm getting one!
What model is the camera chin mount strap accessory seen on your full face in this video? Is that the main one you use for filming? I am hesitating between some 3m 3d printed models or something bulkier/safer as seen in your video
I feel the image quality of the Action 4 was over all much better, especially in the far away details and details in the shadows. Interesting comparison. - And what a close call with that moto-guy... yikes!
I also whitewater kayak, I assume it would be waterproof, but how good? are the lenses replaceable, I've had a couple get scratched, and love I can replace them with GoPro? What are the price points?
Kinda seems like I am in the minority, but I enjoyed the GoPro side more as the DJI side’s wide angle seemed to have some fisheye or something that make it harder to watch for me. It just had that weird warping thing. That said, the audio was noticeably better on the DJI.
The 3 in my opinion couldnt compare ti the gopro, but man did they improve on the details! To me the stabalisation on the gopro is more efficient, but the speed picks up better on the dji. And the dji mounting is great! Eather camera is good at this point! 👍🏼
I think the dJI is now my favorite camera. I'll buy it for XMas in combo with my GoPro Hero 9. Writing this comment before the end of the video, hope you'll talk about the battery life ahahha
What software can you use to edit the DJI footage? does it comes with one that could show the GPS speed, altitude etc ? So stupid that GoPro removed that... Quick error in the editing btw :) You talked about the GoPro battery but then you insert a battery in the DJI hehehe So good comment regarding the Bluetooth connexion. Also, very sad to hear your heart is still not healed fully, I wish you all the best!
As a mountain biker and Moto rider in Boise I can say that doesn’t happen very often. Usually we see each other or MTB hears them coming at least! Glad everyone was OK. Be careful out there
@@YogiTheBearMan yeah normally you can hear them in the distance but i have actually had two close encounters on Trail 4 recently and someone we know got in a head on and broke their nose hitting the moto. Makes me nervous every time i ride that trail now haha.
Is there a sharpening and noise reduction setting like on DJI drones? On the Mini 3 Pro set to -2 for both, it completely fixes the oversharpening as well as the discoloration and chroma blobs in shadows and overall the footage is way less noisy, too.
Hey Dennis, yeah so when i got the camera initially it had sharpness and noise reduction adjustable from -5 to 5 and then after an update that went away. Then a subsequent update allowed for low medium and high sharpness and noise reduction. This was all filmed on Medium but i will try low on the next project!
@@AprilRideMTB that's great, glad to know. Hope it also improves low light like it did on my Mini 3 Pro. With sharpening and noise reduction set to lowest ISO 1600 looks as good of not better than ISO 400 with regular processing settings. The heavy oversharpening is really damaging to the image.
@@DennisSchmitz100% agree with you. Reducing that ugly digital sharpness was the first i did on my GoPro 11. Really happy now. With the right settings, these little action cams can produce amazing results nowadays.
Never ever apologize for riding an ebike, don't let the haters bully you, I have downhill bikes, super enduro bikes and E-bikes love them all, I won't let anyone spoil my day out what ever bike I'm riding, if someone doesn't like the bike I'm riding tough sh-t 😊
Thank you for the excellent comparison. Audio so much better in Action 4. Also I have noticed that Gopro does not handle that good direct sunlight on the footage. So much lens artifacts. The Action 4 was much better in this situation. Very informative video. keep it up!
I noticed both of these as well - much less wind noise on the Action 4, and much better control of lens flare than the GoPro. Noticed that on several of these comparison videos now.
How was the stabilization on heavy sections of trail? Technical chunky stuff? I think that is the key feature that my decision is based on. I want the DJI but I hear the stabilization is not as good. What is your experience?
