I dont care about the "Sport aspect/ waterproof and such) is the Pocket 2 a better camera than Gopro 8/9 and is it as good Stabil out of the camera (NOT modified in post) ?
Thanks for doing this. I have a iPhone 12. I have been really pleased with the quality of the photos and video. The form factor for taking stills and video is a bit awkward; however, I purchased the Small Rig smart phone holder. This unit have dramatically improved my experience.
The Pocket 2 is highly recommended for content creators especially for those who film themselves for hours out in the streets. It's an all-around tool.
Thanks for putting this together. You made a good point. If you want the best of both worlds, why not get both? Best gimbal/stabilization with the best camera all at the consumer level. Also with these 2 devices, they’re both pocketable and you can record and edit all onto your phone.
Great comparison! You touched on every point of concern for me. Ultimately, as someone who use a iPhone to take photos and video, Pocket 2 seems to fit someone like me who doesn’t want to be bothered by a device that’s too complicated.
I'm still on the iPhone 7 Plus and really don't want to upgrade until I absolutely have to. Presumably there would be no problem connecting the pocket 2 to the phone in the same was as you did for the iPhone 12?
Great video. I cant get my head around AFs and AFC . Is AFS like manual focus ? so you click on it once and it's focused at that point. So for example Click AFS once on a landscape. Move behind a rock ( rock should be blurred out) Pan /slide left and landscape will be in focus. AFC always does auto focus Landscape is in focus move behind rocK and it will refocus on the rock when would you use AFS vs AFC Regards
LoL. I still didn't get that. Or maybe my English not good at all. For many short video and easy to use for daily, which one to choose? Pocket 2 VS Dji Om 3 + Huawei P40 pro (I don't have iPhone 12). I'm working on real estate, need to shoot many houses and indoor room, and mostly I edit my video using smartphone too
The Pocket also makes sense for privacy-concerned people. No automatic cloud uploads, no analysis of your data etc. And budget-wise, some people, like me, buy flagships only for cameras. It may be an interesting option to go for mid-end phone and Pocket 2. I'm aware You'll end up with 2 devices, but for some...
Do you think shooting with a pocket 2 with that tiny window makes it less enjoyable of a process? compared to having that big screen on the iphone? or in the end, it's about the same once we get used to it?
Good question, once I learned to trust it and I saw that the footage looks very good on a big screen, I got used to that small screen. If you need a larger screen, you can easily connect it to the smartphone, so I am generally fine with the P2 screen.
At 8:12 you were controlling the Pocket 2 wirelessly with the iPhone app. I don't see the "Do-It-All handle" attached. Does that mean you don't need it to be able to control the Pocket 2 with the iPhone app? I thought the Pocket 2 does not have WIFI/BT without the "Do-It-All handle". Thanks.
Thanks for another excellent review! I will be upgrading to the Pocket 2 from Pocket 1 as the new focal length eliminates fumbling with extension sticks while cycling. I have found the Pocket’s gimbal stabilization works much better than the iPhone while cycling or hiking (and also in high dynamic range settings with the magnetic ND filters). The Pocket also takes smoother panning shots. That said, I agree with your conclusion that my post-COVID travel bag needs both, so before my next trip I will also be upgrading to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I travel with only one carry-on sized bag and every piece of camera gear has to earn its place. After trying the new Pocket2/iPhone combo, I’ll have to decide whether the pick-up in image quality from my Sony 6500 with its compact but mediocre 16-50 kit lens justifies the incremental bulk or whether to drop it. I’m not sold on the ZV-1 as a smaller replacement for the 6500 or as a compliment to the Pocket2/iPhone combo.
Have you settled on a specific camera or combination of cameras? I am currently in a very similar situation and would love to hear any conclusions/solutions you have found!
@@prod.lyelye I completed multiple inn-to-inn hiking and cycling trips in Europe in 2022 (Cami de Ronda, Wainright’s Coast to Coast, cycling loop around Netherlands). Osmo Pocket 2 was amazing, delivering by far the best 4k video quality walking or on a bike, and some stills. Had a waterproof case to store it on rainy days. Sony 6500 with kit lens delivered by far the best landscape stills at a small size. Video sucks and struggles with high contrast environments. Wouldn’t go any bigger or I just wouldn’t take the camera with me at all. iPhone delivered the best people shots, selfies, random quick shots of interesting things and good enough movies with the advantage that it was always with me in my right hip pocket where the other cameras might not be. Spent lots of time practicing with each camera and comparing shots before the trip to refine which camera I would use in which setting. Took 6500 photos and videos overall. Captured memories of three bucket list trips that I will treasure forever. Would make the same choices again. Nothing on the market since then would bump any of three cameras from my rotation. Full frame cameras and lenses are just too big for this kind of trip.
Great video!! Thank you for doing this. I have a quick question for you. i hope you don't mind. I recently purchased a Sony A6600 mirrorless camera and am at looking at gimbals for it. However, this mean more money, more to carry, and I definitely want image tracking capabilities, so that is even more money. Anyway, my question is (I'm a newbie here, so bear with me here,) if i were to use the Pocket 2 for some moving and tracking footage, do you know if it would pair well with footage from the Sony A6600? The only lens i have currently is the Sigma 16mm F1.4. Which I do love :) Anyway, you don't need to give a detailed answer, just wondering if you have done this with whatever "full" camera you may use. Looks like you may use the A7III? And if you do read this and don't reply, I still thank you for this video!! I do love the ease of having something just ready to go like that. Definitely subscribed!!!
Thank you, I appreciate your subscription. Unfortunately, the tracking is the weakest part of Pocket 2. In reality, it is not as useful as ti might seem to be, so I wouldn't make that a top priority. In terms of the image quality, Pocket 2 footage won't look out of the place when mixed with A6600 footage.
Oh...and i do also have the iphone 12 pro max and a DJI mobile gimbal. But the idea of just having the Pocket 2 in my pocket and not having to set anything up plus possibly better video quality is of course more intriguing. I am a one man shop at the moment, so ease is what I am looking for. However, would also like usable quality as well, of course. Thanks again. And I guess my "quick" question turned out to be not so quick...sorry...haha. But in the end, the main question after all this is just if you think the Pocket 2 footage will pair well with the Sony A6600. I probably just could ave left it at that, but I tend to babble..LOL. Cheers, my friend.
Hello, my friend. I recently purchased a Pocket 2. After testing, I found two major problems about its video image quality. 1st, the image quality is worse under 4K high frame rates settings (4k/48/50/60). I observed obvious loss of detail and pixelated object edges under high frame rates. 2nd, I observed lots of artifacts in fast moving scenes, especially at the edge of objects and in the sky. The artifacts are more serious at lower frame rate settings (when the bitrate is 80Mps). These problems do not exit in OSMO Pocket 1. Pocket 1 produces more consistent results. I reported the problems to DJI. Previously, they replied that Pocket 2 uses pixel binding to achieve high framerates which may cause the problem. Later, they changed tone and refused to admit there's any downgrade of image quality under high framerates other than some moiré. And they told me they had no plan to address this issue. So I wonder if you could do a scientific image quality test comparing 4K videos under lower frame rates (4K24/25/30) to high frame rates (4K/48/50/60). You are the only photography/videography reviewer I trust who is not a corporate sellout. I hope maybe you can verify my findings. Thanks a lot!
Yes, 60p video looks worse than 25p. That is probably a side-effect of high-res sensor. Using D-Cinelike helps a lot because it uses less sharpening which means that there is less artifacts. I generally recommend using 60p only when necessary (on any camera).
I don't think that it is disappointing. Having any 4K 60p with a large 1/1.7" sensor in such tiny device is very impressive. Expecting uncompromised quality in all modes wouldn't be reasonable.
Wow 😳...Very helpful comparison, I just love this Video and everything is on point. Keep it up man👌🏽. I wish someone could buy the iPhone 12pro for my gift 🎁, you made me LOVE it
As an owner of the iPhone 12 Pro, I have purchased the DJI OM4, which gives a three axis gimbal and all the features of Mimo app. And I prefer using the iPhone over the Pocket for photos because I can compose them much better on the bigger and brighter screen. And now that Apple lets you capture RAW images in the native camera app, but still retains all of Apple's almost magic like image processing features, it's hard to top that kind of computational photography. And I'm aware that I can connect the iPhone to the Pocket, and use the larger screen of the iPhone, but at point I'm not longer using a pocket sized device. Great review, you make many excellent points.
Thank you! I have replaced all of my smartphones gimbals with Pocket 2 and Osmo Pocket. Smartphone gimbals are too cumbersome IMO and the setup process is very inconvenient in comparison to pressing a button on Pocket 2.
@@RonaldBrown59 That doesn't work at all for me with flat edge 12 Pro and case. I don't think that having the clamp permanently attached is a good solution. Maybe if it worked with MagSafe.
@@mikeljon02 The devices sent out for review had an early version of the firmware which included HDR. But the current firmware available to end users does not have that feature - which is causing many complaints on the DJI forum! I think they withdrew the feature as it may have been causing overheating, and it wasn't very effective anyway.
In your close-up comparison of the two cameras, you say the pocket 2 has more detail than the iPhone 12 yet in that photo it is clear that there iPhone 12 has far more detail. Is this an error?
@@TheHybridShooter I took your advice and found that there are lots more people asking exactly the same question. The answers are apparently directed at professional photographers, not amateurs like me. While I do understand there is a difference, which is the answer you gave, the explanations don't help me in a decision to buy a Pocket 2 v. upgrading my iphone. However, all the other reviews I've read do support my inclination to buy the P2, given my type of photography.
@@rodrose138 If you want it too look more like iPhone, that is not a problem. Standard color settings is a lot closer to iPhone and you can further increase the sharpness in post production.
@@Tigriss187 I think your balance is wrong man. A lot of people can balance osmo 3 with Iphone 11 pro max (way bigger than your iphone 11); without needing an counterweight.
It would be great to know how compares with a compact camera like the Sony ZV1, Sony RX0II, Canon G9XII, or even a Insta360 OneR 1" module. I don't know if a flagship top model smartphone or the Pocket2 can deliver same image quality of a compact 1" sensor camera
I agree, it is a good topic, but I am not able to make such comparison at the moment due to bad weather, lockdown and travel restrictions. I will try to do so in early 2021.
Hi friend thanks for your comparison, as you know the price of iphone 12 and DJI pocket 2 are way deference. DJI pocket 2 is under $400.00 Iphone 12 is over $800.00.
I don't know what but there's something about the dji pocket 2 that makes it look better to me than the iPhone. I think it's the color processing. But, I'm not sure. And the DJI pocket 2 captures a quite a lot more detail
You didn't mention the audio functions of these devices, unless I missed it... the Pocket 2 is almost like a good audio recorder which also shoots video! I have no idea what the built in mics of the iPhone are like, but I would be surprised if they were better than the Pocket 2, overall. And if you buy the Creator pack version of the P2 then the options for audio are remarkable. In recent years it's become normal to have almost no location audio on RU-vid videos, as it's been replaced with boring music. Perhaps this is because so many video cameras have poor audio. With the Pocket 2, DJI have shown that first class audio can be integrated into a tiny camera, and hopefully this will mean more location audio being used and less music, particularly on travel videos where immersive audio greatly enhances the experience of 'being there'.
thanks for this insightful review :) at 12:33 you mention Android phones drain the Osmo battery when connected. Any idea how to prevent that? Is there an android hack out there you heard of?
something that is valuable to a person who might use these tools professionally is frame dropping. I have no worries of dropped frames with the DJI at 4k 60, but I have not seen a cell phone yet that does not drop frames. For a lot of people, it would be useful for real estate especially, to have a phone with ultrawide that they could deliver a pro result. Does the iphone drop frames in continuous use? Bit depth is not addressed. The pocket is probably 8. But is the HDR on the Iphone 10? These are important things for a camera that is more than a hobby. Thank you for your reviews.
Great video comparison! I love the pocket 2 and I prefer it better over the iPhone 12 because at low light, the iPhone has horrible green dot flares. The HDR on the iPhone sometimes flickers and is very distracting. Therefore, overall the pocket 2 is a better option for me. Don’t get me wrong, the iPhone 12 is a beast! However, I find the pocket 2 more suitable for my needs and it offers unique advantages that the iPhone does not have.
i think could be interesting to compare the iPhone vs Pocket2 or other cameras but using FilMic Pro or other good app for video. The iPhone can do better and more classy video with dedicated apps. I think could be better image quality than Pocket2
@@TheHybridShooter I thought it would be like in android where you can control all video parameters including sharpening. But the iPhone video looks more or less like the one taken by the phone's native app
If you film a lot the iPhone will overheat. The pocket 2 does not. I have extensively tested them as that’s what I use for my RU-vid channel. iPhone is good for short videos here and there and that’s about it.
Its funny how everytime you say the pocket captures more detail, the shot shown seems to be the opposite, less detail over the iphone, is that just me?
I own the 1st gen Pocket. I'm all about portability and picked it up to dabble in video as my main camera is an X100V. However, I found the in-built display too small to compose shots in general usage. Attaching it to a smartphone was too cumbersome. Still, it's great for timelapses and pans (or the two combined) so I have a use for it.
zv1 has too narrow field of view so you always need a selfie stick when vlogging. Also stabilization requires even further crop or fixing in post which takes time
I honestly do not see how several of the video reviewers are saying the DJI has more detail in the shot. I am looking straight at the video and there is no question the iPhone remarkably has much more detail despite being a bit saturated.
@@TheHybridShooter I understand there is a difference as I just looked it up, but I prefer the shots of the iPhone when it comes to places, but I agree the DJI looks better on faces and the iPhone colors look over saturated at times to me on faces in bright shots. But, for everything else i just really like the images photo and video of the iPhone. The DJI just looks unpoppish (yes I just made that word up, LOL!) and not vibrant to me. The audio on the wireless mic on the DJI sounds surprisingly good, i don’t know anyway to get wireless mic on the iPhone. How do you compare the DJI Pocket to the Sony ZV1?
@@mrmaramind If you prefer iPhone sharpening and colors, you can just use normal color profile on Pocket 2 or add sharpness in editing. ZV-1 is completely different device, so that is too complicated for a RU-vid comment.
Iphone12 has much sharper video than Pocket2. Heck even pocket1 has sharper and better video than pocket2 as seen from your other comparison video. Also Iphone12 has much better low light performance as its sensor has much larger pixels. You try to put emphasis on larger sensor of Pocket2 but you need to understand that its larger sensor has much smaller pixels which gather much less light per pixel and so they are much less sensitive. Do your homework. Other than that your videos are excellent.
Thank you, but you are definitely the one who needs to do the homework. iPhone video is sharper, but notice that I make a clear distinction between the sharpness and detail. Sharpness is just selective increase of contrast. If you want to want to match iPhone sharpness with Pocket 2, it is super easy just by increasing the sharpening. Pocket 2 captures much more real detail and I dislike overshapened video, so I don't use much sharpening in my videos. The low light is much better on Pocket 2. What matters is the total area, pixel size is MUCH less important, due to the effects of downsampling, or in this case pixel binning. What you wrote is a common misconception, but it is incorrect.
@@TheHybridShooter I meant that iPhone video quality looks better because of more advanced post processing. iPhone actually uses Sony lenses. iPhone's post color, light, etc correction makes it better. Maybe, if you would manually post process the pocket's footage, you could overall get a better quality (at least look like a better quality). Please correct me if I'm wrong.
iPhone's over-processed look is actually considered to be "cheap" by more advanced users. More natural look of Pocket 2 with more detail is generally preferred. iPhones use Sony sensors, not lenses. DJI also uses Sony sensors, much like almost all manufacturers.
iphone camera is good. but after three years of experience using iphone 10 and 12 pro max they're giving new updation and literally they're reducing camera's quality for iphone. anybody recognise it?? might be their business tricks to make us buy latest iphone.. by reducing present iphone camera quality and make us to think n buy new/latest iphone. I really know well n good about it. (bcoz im an iphone user since 2014 -2022).
