Hi I'm fairly new to the pocket 2 and initially bought a set of standard ND filters but I found them to be a bit fiddly and soon got tired of switching out filters every 5-minutes to suit the varying lighting conditions so I purchased a pair of variable ND filters and these have proved to be really good. As they were only an experiment I didn't buy the most expensive I simply bought a reasonable brand and they've worked out fine. I no longer have to fiddle around changing the filters - all I have to do is rotate the bezel on the outer edge of the filter until my exposure value comes down to something close to what's required. Because I'm in the UK I shoot in 25 frames per second and always try to stick to a 50th of a second shutter speed but I'm coming round to thinking now that I might start filming in 50 frames per second at 100th shutter in order to be able to use the slow motion that you outlined so well in this video. After watching one of your previous videos I've also just invested in a z-axis stabilizer as I'm not exactly nimble these days and I need all the help I can get with smooth video! This has yet to be delivered and is on its way from Australia as we speak. Thanks for your very informative videos I've just subscribed 🙂

Frames per second is definitely a personal choice. I tend to shoot at 24 fps with my Osmo Action too. But, shooting at both 24 fps and 60 fps seems like an odd choice. Have you tried shooting at 48 fps instead of 60 fps? It's far easier to process halving or doubling speed. 30 and 60 fps or 24 and 48 fps is the diggity. I am still considering a Pocket 2, so thanks for your perspective.
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 3 года назад
You make a good point, I have never tried shooting in 48 fps. For my RU-vid channel and my personal videos I mostly shooting in 24 fps but for my professional work, especially broadcast work they want everything to be 30 fps (29.97 fps) so I normally shoot to those formats. I will have to try 48 fps and see the results. Thanks

@Orcification 2 года назад
I have just got the pocket 2. Biggest mistake I make is looking at the camera itself like you would a normal action cam and NOT looking at the screen to see what you are actually recording. Guess I've just got to get used to the gimbal, never used one before. I've messed up nearly all my videos so far by doing this. There is definitely an art in using this camera, I'll get there in the end.
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 2 года назад
Don't feel bad about not looking at the lens, it took me a long time to stop looking at the screen. Now I always look at the lens and sometimes I just glance down at the screen to make sure I am centred.
@Orcification
@Orcification Год назад
@@Tensentities Yea I guess we are. I suppose it depends on what you use it for and what works best for you. I was using a "Normal" action camera before and so the gimble was a challenge. I was looking at the camera body and it turned out on looking at the recording that I had not recorded exactly what I wanted. With a normal camera you can basically point it in the direction you want and record, any fast camera movement translates to a fast camera movement, with this camera the gimble slows things down so there is a disconnect, a sort of lag to where the actual camera body is and where the lens is recording. Great for slow B roll shots though. It's a bit hard to explain until you actually use one. Once you get used to it, it's OK.

Good list. More mistakes - using FPV mode for no real reason, leading to crooked horizons - putting the camera into the supplied case with the power button facing outwards so it gets turned on accidentally - setting the gimbal speed too high so pans get too abrupt - putting background music on videos where the original sound would have added interest and immersion - treating the camera as if it's a gopro instead of the quite delicate thing that it is - not checking and rechecking that you've not dropped the wide angle lens...
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 3 года назад
Ha, thanks Peter, that is a good list. I actually had the Go Pro and the wide angle issue, actually ND filter instead of wide angle for me. The FPV mode is funny, I don't use that mode much. The power button is a good one, so frustrating!

I have a question. I'm seriously thinking of getting this. I'm a videographer, and do a bit of weddings. I was thinking of using this for outdoor ceremonies only and no this wouldn't be my only camera. I would use for the entrances and center cam during the ceremony. I do already use my Panasonic G9 on a gimbal works great, but auto focus isn't great it's not bad if you do what I do and use a prime lens, but with this I could actually do a small zoom in to change that center shot during the ceremony IE ring exchange, vows and maybe kiss. What are your thoughts?

Ya the video quality will not be as good indoors as it would be outdoors. It has a smaller sensor so it need plenty of light to give you a good image. Most cameras are like this. If shooting indoors I would not use the slow mode as it will look worse. With enough light I find the image of the Pocket 2 to be decent indoors, but much better outdoors. Good luck.

I know about one mistake because it's mine too: Osmo is the cheapest 4K camera on the market, so I thought I'd be able to continue using my old computer, on which I've been editing Full HD sequences until now. Error. There is even one video where the author reflects on the fact that his files from Osmo Pocket do not want to work properly in Adobe premiere, while he does not have this problem from other cameras. So maybe you have a topic for a whole video

Just got a Pocket 2 about 5 days ago and just love it! One thing I've noticed, though: so far I've been shooting everything in 4K, 60 fps, and uploaded the video to RU-vid. Problem: sometimes it uploads 4K videos in 4K, other times it uploads in only 1080P - ALL 4K videos, too. Any idea why?
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 2 года назад
Congrats on the camera, I hope you enjoy it. I also shoot in 4k. If you are taking those 4k clips and uploading them directly to RU-vid then it's probably RU-vid taking your 4k video and down converting them to 1080p. I do know when I upload videos, especially to my other YT channel, The Lazy Camper RU-vid channel it does take some time for RU-vid to create the 4k version. RU-vid will start with the smaller versions then work on making the 4k versions. A few times on that channel, it has taken over a day to make the 4k version. Good luck.

Many thanks, I'll be following the channel.

Hi Martin, yes the filters will still help in auto mode but they they work best in manual mode. If you are using the Pocket 2 for quick vlogging I would just try it in Auto mode without any filter to see if you are happy with the results. For taking head shots you may be fine. Good luck.

I've own a ZHIYUN gimbal for two years and can count on one hand the number of times I've used it. QUESTION: What do you think of the Pocket 2 from a casual photography perspective. I'll be heading to Disney World in about a month and was wondering about the quality of photos and also how easy it would be to bounce back and forth between taking video and photos. What-a-ya think?

Thanks for the comment. I totally agree with you about the larger gimbals, they work great but such a pain. That's what is great about the Pocket 2, so small and simple. As for photos it does a decent job, I actually really like the pano features, but I wouldn't rely on it if you are looking to get really high end photos. I actually took the Osmo Pocket, original version with me to Disney in 2019, I just bought the camera and the firmware wasn't great but it was perfect for Disney with the family. Have a good trip.

AFC always does auto focus Landscape is in focus move behind rocK and it will refocus on the rock when would you use AFS vs AFC Regards

thanks for the nice comment. I shoot in 24 fps for these shots simply because I like the look of 24 fps, just a preference. Some people don't like it but I like the more film look. Also I then edit my sequence in 24 fps and when I do shoot something in 60fps, I am actually able to slow that footage down more than I would be able to if I shot in 30 fps. As far as cine mode, I do use it from time to time but I have no problem shooting in colour mode, I think it looks pretty decent right out of the camera.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with this camera. We just picked one up too. In your experience should we be using any filters for interior Real Estate based shots?
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 3 года назад
The Pocket 2 can be great for real estate. I don't think you would need any filters if you are shooting inside. Just make sure you have plenty of light to help with the Pocket 2 and the smaller sensor. Good luck

What’s the pros and cons of using a pocket 2 over an osmo mobile?
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 3 года назад
Hi Jason, I like having a stand alone camera like the pocket 2. I also have the osmo mobile 4, and I like it but I do not find it gives me the same kind of shots that I get with the pocket 2. The pocket 2 is much smaller as well and I just find it is much more enjoyable to use.

Did you film this video with the pocket 2? If not why not? Is the quality not good enough?
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 3 года назад
For this video, I only have one Pocket 2 so I wanted to hold the camera at times when I talk about it so I used my Sony a6400 to film the talking head parts. I have used the Pocket 2 for the talking head parts in other videos. The quality is not as good as my mirrorless camera but I think it does a decent job.

I wish the pocket 2 has the older lens from the pocket 1 because of the narrower angle, looks more cinematic i think. So recording in 60fps it better for slow motion even when i export the video in 30fps?

Which little case with the loop do you use for the camera?
@DavidDavies

Are you talking about my leather case? It's from mega gear, it fits the original Osmo pocket really well and it's a bit tight on the Pocket 2.

Great video! I attached my Rode wireless 2 to my Osmo 2 with creator combo while attached to my phone and got a electronic buzzing, like interference. Have you had this problem and do you know how to fix this? Thanks!

Biggesst flaw for me was that it takes about 6 sec till the external mic is regogniced .. Often it dosent connect at All ...

Ya I have heard some people have that problem. I wish it worked faster. My mic always connects but I wish it connects right away, the camera powers on so quickly.

Dave… love the vids. I need help. My wife and I find ourselves out and about with the pocket 2 combo. But we find the micro won’t pick up the other persons audio. Duel mic setup? We’re within 5’. Got a hack for us?
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 3 года назад
Hi there, that's odd. Are you using the internal microphone or an external mic? With the internal, or camera mic, I know the camera tries to use the microphone in which the gimbal is pointing but I thought it records multiple channels. Are you on opposite sides of the camera?
@kenlyn2208
@kenlyn2208 3 года назад
Yeah… she’s not always facing the pocket 2. We tried putting the mic on her but it shuts off the internal mic… so that failed. Since I commented I may have a solution from Rode with their Go ii. We can both mic up. We’ll be trialing it tomorrow. Tech guy was generous enough to let me test it at home verse at his shop

I have DJI Pocket 2 and when I shoot using HDR my mouth doesn’t go with what I say. Do you know what went wrong with that?
@DavidDavies

That's weird, so the audio and video is out of sync in HDR mode? I haven't tried HDR mode much because it crops in on the video, I will have to take a look

Thanks for your quick reply - but that's not the case. It's technical information at the bottom of my videos that is the problem and I do not know how to avoid it or turn it off. I'm just attaching a picture where you can see the problem at the bottom! How do I email a picture to you showing the problem?
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 3 года назад
Hello Lars, I saw you photo, that is odd. I'm not sure why it is displaying you video settings on the screen. Has it always done this? I wonder if you have a pre-production model of the camera. Sometimes they will have the burnt in display to help their engineers finalize the product. I think you should definitely contact DJI. Sorry this happened to you.

FYI- Pocket 2 has serious overheating issues, and issues with do-it-all handle disconnecting and reconnecting ruining your footage by cutting randomly and connecting issues with app too.

Thank you so much for this tutorial!! :). One question, how do you know which ND filter do you need to use in each moment of the day or night?
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 3 года назад
That is a great question Fran. I used ND filters so that I can shoot at iso 100 and my shutter at double my frame rate, so I like to shoot in 4k in 24 frames per second, so I will set me iso to 100 and my shutter to 50. Then I will add my ND filter until my footage looks good and properly exposed. There is some trial and error. You can use your EV metre to make sure you shot is properly exposed. Once you get comfortable enough you will figure out which level of ND works for each shot.

My dji osmo pocket 2 easily heats up. Why is it like this?
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 3 года назад
That can happen. Are you shooting in 4k high quality? It will heat up after a bit, actually I find that it heats up quite a bit. I have shot for a long time with the Pocket 2 and I have never had the camera shut down due to heat which can happen with other cameras.

I will add a comment to the "ninja walk" style of filming to reduce the bobbing during filming. There is a setting for the gimbal speed (1 through 10) that can reduce the sensitivity of the movement. The default setting is not very good as you will notice jitters on even the slightest movement.

What case/bag are you using for the pocket 2?
@DavidDavies
@DavidDavies 3 года назад
I bought a simple travel bag from amazon, it reminds me of a smaller lunch bag. It holds all my gear and is not to big so I can carry it around. If I find the brand I will let you know.

@@DavidDavies seconding this question. Those cases looked great and I'd love to get some. I tried a couple of cases from Amazon but I returned them b/c I didn't like them and would like to get some better ones. Excellent video by the way. Very informative and well delivered. If you are shooting in pro mode in 4k it will heat up but it should not be heating up that quickly. Does it stop working or shut down due to the heat?

@@DavidDavies No it doesn't stop but without even shooting, just by turning it on..it gets heated within 7-8 min. Thank you for replying
