This video explains how to set up a Waypoint 2.0 mission while in flight. I plan to use Waypoints 2.0 and my Mavic 2 Pro for a 18 to 24 month project to document a construction build. I discovered some issues with it, and I need your suggestions! I love the mode, but maybe there's something better.

Nice video! One thing though you didn't set the arc radius. Once you've chosen arc go back to each wapoint and set the arc turning radius. This will help to get smoother video from point to point. The larger the turning radius the smoother it will be. Its the last input on the lower bar where altitude and speed are. It shown on way point 2 and so on because no arc is needed for way point 1.
@51Drones
@51Drones 5 лет назад
Nope. Tried it this morning. You don't have the ability to change the arc turning radius. The last input is the POI.

Hey Russ, when you are setting up the waypoints, try using a protractor that has different size circles on it as a template to draw a perfect circle and get a perfect radius for the point of interest at each waypoint. I’m not sure if it would be better to use arc or polyline, but having a more accurate circle might keep the camera’s perspective consistent on the POI. Thanks for the videos. Always something new to learn.

Maybe you can create a two-point mission - 1 is your take off spot and 2 is the center of your POI. Set it to hover after completing mission, then switch over to POI with the same settings each time. By running the mission to point 2 then switching flight mode you would kind of guarantee the same center for the POI.

Hey Use you way points within point of interest. use 1 or 2 waypoints if you have to use 2. one from starting point and 2 at the center to set your point of interest location and height. then write down your radius distance and speed for that mission. You'll always start from the same center point and height.

Very good info. Using a POI would ensure a smother circle. But with a changing structure while under construction it would hard to find your center point week after week . But if you’re somewhat close I don’t think it would matter. In any event this is the best explanation of waypoint 2 I’ve seen. Thanks man.

The idea being to show winter turning into summer with flying over trees as an example. But I've noticed that you don't really get the same shot and it's not as accurate as I hoped it would be. Iam having to dissolved cuts into each other to hind how far the footage is out. Hopefully dji can make the GPS more accurate soon.

I would have use POI function in smart mode 100%. Set the speed to as slow as however much memory you have on your SD card, and get a nice slow video in DLOG, 4K. Take that into your video editor and adjust your speed there how you like, even bringing it back down to 1 mph and do some voice over narration. You can even finish off the video with a stability function, but that will cause clipping around the edges, so make sure your distance from POI is far enough away to where you won't miss it or the surroundings of it.

Hi Russ, I am a Real Estate photographer using a Mavic 2 Pro. I shoot stills only and feel that Waypoints will help me considerably. I have researched quite a bit and have not found what I am looking for. It is this: I would like to set missions from home, drive to the jobs, launch and shoot the home using waypoints, significantly speeding up my workflow. Unfortunately, most of my jobs are 10 to 30 miles away from home. I called DJI today and was fairly disappointed in the answer given by support. It took me several minutes to relay what I wanted the tech to understand. He kept telling me that I could only set waypoints by holding the drone over my head, (yes really). Eventually, he said it wasn't possible. I had to download GS Pro and pay for Waypoints through that site to do what I had in mind. I told him I knew it could be done using Litchi, but he was not helpful after that. I hope I am clear in my explanation. Do you or anyone have a suggestion for me? Thanks, Russ for all you do to help us here. I love your videos.

I have been using litchi for years now and the first thing I noticed when waypoints 2.0 was released was the instability! Litchi really has dji beat ! I hope dji can fix this in the next update also when using litchi the drone does not need to be powered on when making the flight plan VERY CONVENIENT and doesn’t drain the drones battery 🔋! And I think you can draw the mission on the map FAST AND EFFICIENT! I assume you are aware of most of this but maybe someone will find this helpful!

Russ, I think I would consider using the Litchi app for this, as it gives you the ability to create an orbit mission, then fly the exact same orbit again and again. I believe the lines between the waypoints is a straight line and you had the camera at waypoint one in that direction and you were right about having the other points aim at the same place. That is where the mini adjustment came from. If you set the point of interest and set distance from and clockwise or counterclockwise is should be smooth. In other words, I don't think you need waypoints for a perfect circle around the plant. Waypoints would be better for an irregular shape property or plant.

I created a new flight plan yesterday with 8 waypoints, flying around one building/POI. I did not set an elevation for the POI, which may explain what happened in my resulting video. But, when I watched the video later, the building, which was supposed to be the POI, was not, for many of the waypoints. And, I don't think it was ever centered in any of the waypoint positions. I am not sure what other adjustments to make, except I am going to elevate the POI to about 15 feet and see what difference that might make. BTW, the POI is not centered in the rough 360 degree circle that the waypoints make. They are at varying elevations and distances from the building.

Let's say you have all your waypoints set just how you like, just how you show it here in the video, and then you go actually fly your mission and while you're flying you wish you would have made a couple of adjustments. What's the quickest/best way to make changes? For instance, you wish your gimbal was down just slightly more than you set it for and you make the adjustment while you're flying the mission but want that new setting from now on.

I think I need a Tips & Tricks video to cover the finer details and issues that might be encountered. While you video is good and does help with learning some issues, such as the drone making adjustments, I really wish you would have done all of the experimentation before showing your learning process. For example learn how to make a perfect mission then show us, but include information on what does not make a perfect mission. One final recommendation: I cannot see your finger touch when you select an option. Please add a video image of some sort (a small open circle?) over the image to show what you are clicking on.

(I guess this is where Litchi still has the edge on Waypoints 2.0 in that I can logon on my laptop, create a task, then open the Litchi app on my SC once at the site) .. if that makes sense!

Great Video! Now I need to go play with waypoints this weekend. I noticed at around 8:40 right before you sped it up, the red icon for your drone is following that faint blueish line which isn't a smooth arch from point to point. That must be the actual flight path and seems to correspond to the jerky camera movement you pointed out between 2 & 3, 3 to 4 and then again from 9 to 10 and 11 to 12. Another comment mentioned playing with the arc settings but I didn't see them. This project is very similar to one I will be doing in the near future so I want to figure out before constructions starts.

Nope. They auto-discharge now. I want to say it's 5 days, but not certain.

Lol. My thoughts are to learn to fly that pattern manually and forget waypoints all together. Lol. Sorry.... With that being said you could have just set 3 or 4 points and do not put a POI so the camera will not make any corrections. But again this all depends on how good of a ORBIT and camera control you do when manually orbiting to begin with. O well.. I personally think it's much easier and better to use poi instead of way points on this particular mission but that's just my opinion! Thx Russ for the content! Michael

to avoid jittering on the waypoints each waypoint should be set as arc and each waypoint's distance to the point of interest should be equal meaning all the waypoints should sit on a perfect circle around the point of interest, based on what I see your waypoints are not sitting on a perfect circle. the drone's path from each waypoint is to travel on a circle until it hits the next waypoint and see's the next waypoint is off it's path then it quickly jumps to the new waypoint and it create's a jitter. to simplify it, to travel on a perfect circle you need at least 2 waypoints one starting waypoint and one ending waypoint just make sure they are the same distance from the point of interest, and these 2 waypoints could be very close to each other like 10 feet but setting starting waypoint to clockwise or counter clockwise makes sure drone does't take the shorter path between the 2 waypoints and of course setting waypoint types to arc makes sure drone travel's on a perfect circle until it gets to the last waypoint. I haven't tried to see if you can travel on a circle with just one waypoint, which requires to set the same waypoint as starting and end waypoint. I don't think you need this but this is the formula of finding lat,lon on a circle pow(wLat - cLat, 2) + pow(wLon - cLon, 2) = pow(radius, 2)

So Russ, I only have a P4P & MA but, as a lot of commenters have said you should check out Litchi. The waypoint missions are hard to beat and for $20-25 it's a great deal.
@51Drones
@51Drones 5 лет назад
I may do that. Another commenter told me how to fix this mission using waypoints 2.0, but maybe I should do a comparison video.
@RichM1967
@RichM1967 5 лет назад
Easier to do with Litchi. Doing the same thing on a construction site. Was able to set it up a home with the drone off, use an orbit. You have to go to the site, see where the center point is at. then once I knew where it was, using the orbit mode in Litchi was simple. I'm able to do a smooth orbit around.

Tried Waypopoints 2 and although it sounded great, there are a few major flaws in the system. The first of these, is that you cannot save, backup or share the flightplan files... if you loose them after a 'factory reset' on you controller, then they're gone- which is a major issue. Secondly the flights can only be planned with the drone switched on, and if you're anything like me this takes time, and is a waste of battery on the drone. The actual programme, and the semantics and methodology of setting up the flight plan is fiddly and temperamental and frustrating. I've recently downloaded DJI Pilot PE onto my smart controller, now I can programme the flights using the controller only. It is a lot more intuitive, and also allows me to conduct automated mapping ortho photography flights into the bargain. Needless to say, Waypoints 2.0 is obsolete, Pilot PE is the way forward.

Hi. I noticed a discrepancy in the app, @5:40 when adjusting POI height there’s a H next to the number of ft, (I assume h to be height from ground) where as on the bar below, it shows altitude so, when planning waypoint height And POI height offsite at home, do you set POI taking into consideration it’s Altitude (height from sea-level) or its height H height from ground relative from where the aircraft took off from? Thanks.

I wonder if someone could clarify something for me: is the camera always pointing ahead (ie the drone is effectively flying in a sideways curve) or is the camera gimbal also able to pan in a curve during a waypoints move? Hope the question makes sense

Hi Russ, my drone use, at least at the moment, is for still photography. Video might come in time but, I'm looking to shoot stills. I'll be flying later this afternoon and plan to try using waypoints for a project I'm working on. Today's flight will be mostly a "training" flight for me. I haven't delved into all of the waypoint setting options yet but, would I be correct in my assumption that the camera can be set to simply take a photo at each waypoint and then move on to the next? Thanks again for all of your informative postings. 51Drones is far and away the best, most informative drone site here in RU-vid. Alan
