More complex project example - • L2 surface model extra...
The L1 has been a solid player since 2020, but it's had its share of quirks, especially with IMU calibration and accuracy issues 🤔. Now, enter the L2 - DJI's latest marvel. It's like stepping into the future with its incredible 5 cm accuracy at a lofty 150 meters! For the tech-heads out there, that's some serious performance stats 📊🚀.
I took both sensors out for a real-world test on a DJI M350 drone, surveying the same street to see how they stack up. The L1, despite being older, still packs a punch with its ability to capture three data returns per pulse, making it a champ in wooded areas 🌳🌲. The L2, though, takes it up a notch with five returns and a mind-blowing 1.2 million points per second. Talk about data overload!
Tech specs-wise, the L1 needs some warm-up time for IMU calibration and operates at a max of 160 kHz. The L2, on the other hand, is ready to roll right off the bat and pushes the envelope with a 240 kHz sampling rate 📈.
After running the sensors through their paces with 43 checkpoints, I used DJI Terra software for an in-depth look at the point clouds and noise levels. Both sensors are top-notch, but the L2 shows a slight edge in reducing noise, which is a big deal for us in precision mapping 🌍📍.
So, what's my takeaway? While the L1 and L2 are awesome tools, the L2 shows real promise for handling more complex surveying tasks. This comparison has been a hit among our tech community, sparking lots of interesting chats and insights 💬🔥.

For the young surveyor, your content motivated me and gave me a perfect vision for the future of topography survy

Did anyone else notice the squirrel crossing the road at 6:23? Maybe it's just me that saw it cause here in Australia we aren't use to seeing them lol

Hi Rami Very nicely done. I like the way you explain things. I’m a surveying engineer my self, but I don’t practise it now, I hope I will be able to get back to it again soon, the only problem is I am 59 years old and I don’t know if that is a good thing to do. God bless you brother. All the best.

You’re never too old to get back into it. My dad is 63 and he’s still surveying!

Thanks @Tamimi. For small artisan underground mine for 3D Modelling of tunnels or shafts do you recommend to use total station? Hand held scanners? Or Iphone lidar scanner?

Just picked up the L2........about 2 weeks ago. The weather has not allowed me to use it yet. Nice video and thanks for your review. -Brian

Could you pls make a video about PPK with L2 and Matrice 350 RTK? It would be very useful! thnx

Your profile width is 16,4 ft so you shouldn't look at the noise with this large distance because the road has some slope in it to drain water. I would like to see the noise on a smaller width like 1 meter or less to see the actual noise.

I didn't even realize that you could do a width to the profile, I thought it was just on the one axis (Y or X) along with Z. Thanks for pointing that out, I'll be sure to follow this up with a video on LinkedIn.

We use Mavic 3 RTK setup with photogrammetry on surface mines. It works really well, except for forested areas. Can this weed out trees and foilage for topo type maps? EDIT. Just got to the point in this video that shows turning off everything except ground point. NICE.

does this exports a CAD file like a plan of the street, houses and sidewalks etc?
@RamiTamimi

Not automatically, you'll have to extract the data and then use it in a feature extraction software like Pix4Dsurvey.

Could an L2 be flown on a drone inside a warehouse to survey a crane runway?

There is no need for RTK ?

Worth it, not if you fly DJI and are already prevented from doing government related projects in multiple states and growing. Also the DJI sensor is down facing only. Rather get a Resepi sensor.... yes you'll have to sell your children to pay the extra 18K but the sensor takes horizontal sweeps meaning you get sides of buildings etc if you plan the flight properly without the need of a seperate low flight. Also any returns past 3 will often give you a bad reading on flat surfaces and you tend to get ripples on roofing etc, so it is a trade off whether you want better tree cutting ability or better accuracy on regular surfaces (obviously a 150K plus lidar will know how to mitigate these issues but the L2 does create ripples on flat surfaces when past 3 returns).

... Who flies 70ft (21m!) with a lidar sensor? That's not fair. Of course you'll get "good" dataset with this useless height. A "normal" use of L1 and 2 are over at least 180-200ft. Try flying a 350-400ft datasets and then we can make an interesting comparison.
@RamiTamimi
@RamiTamimi 4 месяца назад
For residential sites, I've flown this height. I would say for larger sites I do fly 200-400 feet more often to capture more land and maintain efficiency. I will do a follow-up video on LinkedIn in the next day or two.

why not? if the condition are permitting and the terrain is flat why not?
@panph
@panph 4 месяца назад
@@adlep because it's useless, and the amount of noise doesn't improve the overall quality of the survey respect a 200ft flight. If the terrain is flat so is more convenient less passes at higher altitude. Remember, in lidar process, the less data you have to align, the more absolute precision you can achieve. In an area like that street, a single pass at 50 or 60m would be enough to achieve same results with less data, less flight time, and last but not least to see a real comparison of L1 and L2. I own L1 and I have my L2 on the way, L1 suffer a lot of noise by the distance, at 100m on flat surface you have about 10cm or more noise spread. At 20m they looks exactly the same while L2 should not be affected (at least not that much I hope, I've bought the new one because of this) medium and long range noise.
@adlep
@adlep 4 месяца назад
@@panph I see your point. Less data and noise is better…
@CallingOutAllBS

Ummm...the fact that you chose 5 passes on the L2, immediately destroys any comparison you were trying to do. You should've kept it 3 pass vs 3 pass. This video bears zero credit now.
