There isn't a qeej sound in the mix but I did use the vocal in which the guy explains what the ntij qeej is actually saying. Sampling the Hmong qeej and trying to incorporate it into a song is very hard due the its unique sound.
Here is the original video where I sampled the vocals from:

The above picture was my father. He passed away this year July 2023. We had his funeral 8/19-20. Thank you for choosing his picture. We used this video as part of our slide show. It was very moving and touching. By using this video we were able make a very beautiful tribute to our father who was a txiv qeej and a cultural leader. I will always treasure this video.

Remember the Qeej, that is what represents us Hmongs. It's the symbol, the only one we have left of our roots. I've heard many say these are songs of the devil, I say these are not songs of the devil, these are songs of our ancestors. Before we sang these, they were sung by many before us. Don't forget.

To my dear Hmong people, we need to preserve and practice playing our majestic qeej forever. Ever since our upbringing we had always been in wars and battles to preserve who we are as Hmong. From loosing our country, writing, language, and customs all we had was our qeej that represented us til this day. It may be a simple instrument made from wood and bamboo, but it is a instrument that can touch all our inner feelings with its majestically sung songs through the pipes if you ever listened to it deeply. Here in this video the txiv qeej (player) is singing out the lyrics of his song, which will then turn to melodies on the qeej, but at the same time speak Hmong. All our ancestors fought so hard to preserve this for us future generations to learn and hold on to so we must not let it die. Eventually, It will guide us one day back to our ancestors that once fought hard to preserve this instrument.

The first time I heard this, I cried. When I just got married, I felt so homesick and cried so much for the first three-day-stay. Being a Hmong daughter and not being able to stay with your parents hurts a lot. You never really know how to appreciate and love your parents until there's a reason why you don't get to see them everyday. Please, if you are still living with your parents, please cherish them. They get older everyday and they won't be with you forever. While they are still alive, let them know you love and care for them. ❤️

Im not ib tus tub Ntsuag, both my parents are alive. But in times in my life Ive struggled so much I understand this song. It hits deep in me like no other song would ever do. Both have to do with the fact I have an ear for the hmong qeej so when his qeej vocal hits, it got my to my head. I would cry tears, every time. I hope you continue to find good hmong tradition qeej and song to mix with.
@toufonglee5073
@toufonglee5073 3 года назад
Very good mix sir! To whoever, if you are superstitious with the Hmong kab ploj kev tuag (funerals and death), I recommend you listen to this outside or with headphones. When they paiv (tell their qeej story), they sometimes start with tuag nuj xeem, which basically signals they are starting their qeej song during funeral times. This particular qaj qeej is mostly blown during funerals late into the night when they zov hmo. This zaj qeej basically explains to the surviving family members that their mother/father is really gone for the rest of their lives. They will not see or hear them, but only meet them in their dreams. From here-on-out, they will be me nyuam ntsuag (parentless), and that regardless where they go, they will not find their true mother/father ever again. :*(

@davidvang4448
@davidvang4448 2 года назад
Yes and no, generally, the "tuag num xees" is a formality of the qeej and how it is played, which not always funeral related. It should also be noted that this formality varies depending on the discretion of the qeej master. There are some Qeej songs that are purposed for funeral practices which are generally directed towards the spirit of the deceased, and therefore should not be played out loud, such as qeej taw kev and qeej hlawv ntawv. However this one in particular is from the narrative of the orphaned/widowed, expressing the hardship and heartache of not having anyone to support them (tsis muaj niam, tsis muaj txiv, tsis muaj kwv tsis muaj tij, tsis muaj txij nkawm etc.) And therefore, it's safe to play as it is simply an expression of kho siab & tu siab.

Every time I listen to this I cry. This makes me miss my dad and comforts me. My dad passed away on March 21, right around the time when the statewide quarantine happened. My dad went into cardiac arrest one month prior to him passing (which was on my birthday, unfortunately). That whole month was hell, my dad’s health was declining then all of a sudden it was getting better (for five years my dad was denying heart surgery because he was afraid of dying on the operating table). My dad was having irregular heartbeats so my older sister took him in a few days before his assigned open heart surgery (the docs wanted to keep a close eye on him before pre-ops also). We weren’t able to visit him because of the virus. His surgery was successful but then due to the fact that my dad has declined surgery for so long, the outer layer of tissue couldn’t hold the stitches so it slowly started to rip...leading to lots of blood loss. This song reminds me of my dad because all his life he had no mother..she died when he was one. My paternal grandpa married many times then died. My dad tried so hard to keep him and his siblings together by bringing all of them here to the states. 🥺

This song demonstrates about how you would never know the lost of someone until death has come and taken them away from you. Meaning is to cherish that person before his/her time has come and you will now be left as an orphan (me nyuam ntsuag) as everyone calls it. Buh not specifically you will be an orphan, its a phrase that the elders use to have an understanding of losing someone. (Ntsuag Niam/Txiv) (Ntsuag Txij/Nkawm) (Ntsuag Tub/ki) (Ntsuag Kwv/tij) meaning to have the loss of your parents, siblings, or children of your own that have been brought into this world buh taken away so now you are left with the word orphan of parents, spouse, siblings, or children. Sorry but i hope this makes sense. And it explains how the rain will remind you the darkness of losing a soul and how the tears will fall into the ground that you work hard for to grow and harvest your crops but you are sadden because the person you lost is no longer in the world that we all work hard everyday of our lives. 😭

This song makes me think of my mom, her parents died back in thr jungles of Laos due to poisoned water, and all of her siblings also died, her last family member, her older brother died a few years ago and when my family went to the funeral the relatives didn't like us and treated in a mean way because we were Shamans and they were Christians. My mom is filled with sorrow and saddness. My mom is an Orphan and has no one except for my father's side of the family and her kids.
