Awesome, I have a full filter / breather / catch can system on order and this video has been excellent for help and ideas on what to do with the catch can location.
TAKE NOTE!!! I only had the DK customs catch can on the bike for 1500kms. In that time 1/4 of the can filled up with an oily condensation. The thread inside the catch can which holds the filter element started to rust and deteriorate badly. I Would not recommend a catch can as it can also pressurise due to the breather holes being extremely small. If you do an external breather mod I'd definantly recommend going with a pod filter instead 👍
I installed one right before a week long trip over 1300 miles on my 114 street bob and when I got home it had just a little bit of oily water mix in the bottom and the treaded piece in the middle was covered in rust. I ended just venting it to the ground because honestly it’s mostly just condensation coming out of it.
To be honest I wouldn't recommend the DK customs catch can. After only 1000kms the thread inside the catch can rusted terribly. The small pod filter in the 1st vid is the best route.
Always great content man. I just bought a complete take off Ventilator for $85 on Facebook. Had it powder coated. Gonna put my own spin on this mod for my ‘19 Bob. Thanks for the inspiration. Be safe out there!
@@rickhensley5734 yep I've definantly considered that and will get a wider rear fender to suit a larger back wheel. I'm just looking at a few different types of rear fenders and I'm not 100% on which style I'll go with just yet.
I did the same except mounted the catch in the same place, looks neat I used the CNC brake reservoir in the link 22 AUD delivered,I did my plumbing different to you as my screamin eagle 🦅 stage one air cleaner was easier to mod than youre, anyway really happy with the outcome, thanks for the help, hope the Yammie is going well.
I had a beercan for this purpose duct taped under the tank of my Moto Guzzi. Just stuck the hose in there. On shutdown it would gurgle from this can...
Hey man! They sent me 2 catch cans. I wonder if they saw your video talking about your rust issue? Anyway thanks for the tip - at least I wont be bummed until my second rusts. Lol
@@cdnrider6200 yes the DK custom catch can did not hold up well the threat inside the lid started rusting badly. Im now running the pod filter which I used in my 1st vid of the external breather
@@TheGingybeardMan was that a k&n pod filter? I have already purchased the catch can from dk LOL but i will be putting it in a not so noticeable spot .....take care dude
Think you should consider o2 sensor removal next, look deep into the subject and eventually you will learn those O2 sensors are not there to adjust the mixture for optimal running. They are there to weaken the mixture for emissions, potentially forcing your motor too run hotter. Good for emissions not good for your bike!
You getting any oil accumulating on the top where you drilled the vent holes? I did this to my bike and it's getting oil accumulating on top where the vent holes have been drilled out.
The catch can catches the only residue which would otherwise go into your intake. Yep you could do it to the low rider S but I'd recommend running a pod filter and not a catch can. The catch can rusted pretty badly on the inside after only 1500kms
Thanks for the money saving tip about using a brake reservoir . What's your opinion regarding any existing carbon build up after the mod is done ? Do you you think it will eventually burn off ?
I don't think the existing carbon will burn off due to the way it hardens. That said it's still good to do to prevent excessive carbon from building up
Yes mate, I wouldn't recommend buying it unless they've changed the design since I purchased it. I was pretty disappointed considering it cost me $90 Au. I went back to running a $10 pod filter underneath the frame.
No sir. That amount of hot oily air coming from the breather bolts and into the intake was that miniscule that it doesn't affect the air fuel ratio however over time that oily mist will cause carbon build up on top of the pistons as its going into the combustion chamber.
I used some small aluminium tube I had 👍 although I wouldn't recommend a catch can. This one rusted badly on the inside after only 1500kms also I believe the catch can would pressurise as it only has tiny vent holes at the top. This could in turn have a negative effect on the head breather bolts. I'd recommend using a pod filter over a catch can 👍
No I didn't get any blowback. But the catch can rusted badly on the inside after only 1000kms. I ended up going back to the pod filter which won't rust and will also breath alot better
IF YOU DONT BELIEVE THIS IS NECESSARY, DOC HARLEY HAS ALSO RELEASED A VIDEO AFTER I DID THIS MOD..... CHECK OUT THIS LINK: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LoVuOuhFvDs.html
Why not just leave the stock lid seal in the brake reservoir? that's already there and designed to do that job and would probably work much better than Teflon tape.
You're dead right mate good point. I just wasn't sure how well the rubber will hold up with the heat and oil. Despite have a rubber hose at the top of the catch can, I plan on swapping that for a stainless steel braided line.
Pretty sure it was a 6mm bolt and 40mm in length. The bolt came with the reservoir bracket I purchased, all I had to do was make a small sleeve so the bracket didn't bend when I tightened the bolt. A link to the bracket is in the description 👍
hello man! I allow myself to ask you for advice, sorry for my English, I'm French! In a previous video you remove the fork gaiters and I see that on your last videos you have new ones. Did you have any problems after removing them? I still hesitate to do it for aesthetics, I find it much more beautiful without ... thanks !!
Yes I noticed I was getting some scratches from road debris. There was no major issues and you can keep them off as the softail standard has the same forks as the street bob and they don't have the fork gaiters on.
It's not Harley's doing . It's the strict environmental laws in the US . Many other bikes do this but most don't squirt the hot oil vapour so directly down the bike's throat . My ER5 ( Twister ) vents into the airbox on the OUTSIDE of the filter so that the oil condenses and and dribbles down into a transparent catch can .
Have you had any issues since installing this? Also did you need a new tune? I have a 2020 Street Bob, DK customs kit is on the way, I already have my stage one kit on the bike, just wondering if I may need to get a retune at my local dealer
I havnt had my bike retuned yet but will need to as I've put on a new air filter which allows the intake to breath better. I havnt had any issues since installing 👍
How are you liking those handle bars? I recently got my bike back out of winter storage and had 1st stage done, VH big shots and tuner, and had a sissy bar and handle bars installed from a company here(Dean Speed Custom) and the handle bars are similar to yours, both our bikes came with the 10.5 inch mini apes, these bars are 12 inch high and I absolutely love them, not just the way it feels when riding, but the look is killer!
Man I love the bars im running on the bike. By far my favourite set I've had on the bike. Ill be putting a wrap around front fender and 21 inch front wheel on the bike next
@@TheGingybeardMan cool bro, I'm sure there will be a video on that?? with your rear fender, and the new front, and the gas tank, can't tell it is a street bob. Wondering if you have thought about dropping the rear suspension and front
Sure do mate, there's plenty of eastern brown snakes out this way. They're one of the most venomous snakes in the world. I've had loads of close calls with them over the years.
Yes mate it's just an aftermarket bezel. Here's a link where I bought if off eBay. I had to trim 3 mm off where it joins at the bottom so I could tighten it down snug. www.ebay.com.au/itm/274405774165
I've done 2500kms with the external breather. After 1000kms the internals of the DK customs catch can started to rust. I have since removed the catch can and now run the pod filter. I Havnt experienced any issues.
@@TheGingybeardMan excellent! Thanks for the speedy response! I'm in the process of doing this mod to my '19 CVO Ultra 117ci. Your video was very helpful! Cheers!🍺😁👍
I only had it on the bike for 1500kms. In that time 1/4 of it filled up with an oily condensation. The thread inside the catch can which holds the filter element started to rust and deteriorate badly. I Would not recommend a catch can as it can also pressurise as the breather holes are extremely small. Definantly go with a pod filter over the catch can 👍
No sir, this is only a breather mod which doesn't affect HP. Essentially just diverting oil from your intake into a catch can. I wouldn't recommend a catch can though. If use a pod filter as it will breath easier.
at this stage it's hard to gauge as I havnt put alot of kms on he bike since installing it. I'll check it everytime my air cleaner needs cleaning so probably every 4000 kms. I probably clean my air cleaner a little too often but I prefer my bike to breath well.
The filter was always going to be temporary until I could get the bracket to mount my catch can as stated in my last vid. I'd prefer to catch the blow by oil in a can than drop it onto the road when the filter fills up.
I’ve been enjoying your bikes evolution from over here in Perth, you’ve inspired me for a couple of mods on my ‘19 breakout. I think this one would be a good addition, though for my bike I think I’d locate it closer to where you had it zip tied. Did you order the catch can from over here, or ship it from the states? Did you buy it as a full kit or just the can by itself?
@@TheGingybeardMan I ordered the catch can, and went to Repco to start obtaining the other bits. The guy over here said they didn’t do vacuum hose that small, and they didn’t sell the T connector either. Did you buy them elsewhere? I bought 3/8x5/8 wiring grommets for the holes. We’re they the ones you used?
@@yorichunt by memory I believe they are the correct grommet sizes. I bought the vacumm hose from the online supercheap auto website and the hose barb from China on eBay, here's a link www.ebay.com/itm/322716207234

@@TheGingybeardMan Well that certainly sucks. I thought it was billet aluminum. It should be for what they get for it. Did you locate your pod in the same place up front as before?
@@RealSuperRando yes I've mounted the pod filter back under the frame. The catch can itself is billet aluminium but inside the internals house steel bolt which holds the 3 filter elements together and that bolt has rusted out really quickly.
@@jampyzerozero6921 polar opposite here mate, Summer is just beginning. Isnt Canada one of the coldest climates on the planet? Tough riding weather mate.
To catch the oil coming out of the heads. You could have it running to a pod filter but I dnt like the fact that if the filter overfills, oil will then drop onto the road.
No sir I sold this bike 2 years ago. One thing I will say is don't buy a DK customs catch can. It started to rust badly on the inside after only 1200kms
Need to mount it out of sight. Too nice of a bike to junk it up with that ugly hose. I’ve never heard anyone ask another rider, where’s your catch can?
The water would be condensation build up from heat being put into the catch can. My catch can thread started rusting on the inside so I ditched it and went back to a pod filter
There's 4 ways to divert the oil from the heads. 1- feed oil back into the intake (the factory harley way) 2 - allow oil to drop onto the ground (not a great idea) 3 - run oil to a filter (which will require cleaning as when its full the oil will also drop onto the ground) 4 - or the most sensible way In my opinion is to catch the oil in a catch can.
@@TheGingybeardMan yeah just noticed it. I went through video kinda fast and missed it thanks. I thought the bracket came with hour kit since mine didn’t 😂
