DK I needed this video today... I think Skenes has the same agent or agency as Justin Verlander, who stayed with the Detroit Tigers for 12 years before he left. You never know I guess!

They are doing Paul Skenes a terrible injustice by holding him for the full 6 years and in doing so keeping him stuck with 6 losing "why bother" seasons.

I agree DK. Give credit where it's due. Paul Skenes has been amazing. I'm hoping his game continues, and if it does, he will do what he wants. They won't be able to pay him what other teams offer ! Right now all eye's are on Paul Skenes. Thank you DK Great show

Jason Bay signed to an extension but the rest of the team sucked and Huntington traded him as part of his rebuild. That trade sucked anyways.

That's an example of letting a player go that worked out. Bay had one more big year with Boston but his time with the Mets did not go well at all. The players the Pirates received also did not work out. I'm not defending the owner's cheapness, but smart choices will need to be made when the big contracts come due. This owner must sign Skenes to a major contract in 5-6 years.

DK, Timely subject. The Pirates made the necessary investmates until free agency and a lack of ownership planning a backbone caused then not to make it. They, over the years signed ¿STARS¿ from elsewhere only to eat their overpaid contracts. The end result was the same. The Pirates became a revolving door that was unworthy of even a triple A franchise. This is not on the players, get me. The Steelers made the investments necessary to build a team that won 4 lombardies in 10 years, which should been 6 or 7. Then they got old and lost their will for a decade. Then they built it up again, and took a rest ... they cut bait and ran with no plan.now, we'll see. The Penquins stepped up to puk and made Mario an owner. Sid they incentified Sid. We'll see if it took. No one is looking at Skenes in the big picture spotlight. The same was with Cole, and Bonds, and,... Skenes very likely is the embodiment of the fictional , "the Natural" and perhaps the century awaited phenom, Babe Ruth. Babe was a championship pitcher until he flipped and became the greatest homerun GOAT. Erase the juiced up baseball and the juiced up steroid players, they don't deserve an asterisk. Skenes could have done it either way as well. Right now he is the player that Pitsburgh must keep to build a future, or just give the team to an owner and city that is worthy. Take the chance, sign Skenes to a contract with bonuses, incentives, and ownership possibilities to make him the richest player and most documented since The Babe, for the life of his career, and draw in and sign others that could transcend Pittsburgh baseball to a successful level only second to the Yankees. Either become the piranha or the piraynha! 6 pithes with locckm qation. Come on man. Build build build. Let's go Buckoos, Green Weenìe ! etall ❤
@billkerns9258
@billkerns9258 Месяц назад
Cole was pretty much a lock not to sign with the Pirates. They'd have had to match or beat what he got from other teams, and even if they did that, he wanted to be on a winning team. As for Bonds, he was likely a lock to sign with the Giants. Look at his father and godfather. Not defending the owner at all here. Time will tell if the owner is willing to invest. So far the low overall payroll number leaves fans skeptical for a reason. You can't sign Skenes and Cruz to the deals they will in time demand (especially if Cruz fully breaks out) while keeping such a low overall payroll number. Then there are the other rising aces on the pitching staff. It's not just about stars, as fun as the stars are to watch, it's about overall roster construction.

well, MY opinion is: it's ALL about good play and RESULTS so lets talk some truth here: since the Pirates' last division title (1992), the pirates have had FOUR (count 'em) ---FOUR winning seasons: (2013-2015, 2018)--13 times they lost 90 or more games including four 100-loss seasons, and 7 seasons in a row losing at that rate, also during that time we've seen some of the worst baseball any adults could possibly play while supposedly trying not to........2013-2015 teased us TRUE fans because for a brief period of time we felt we had a team who could not only play baseball well, but a team who could challenge the best.....but Mr. Nutting saw his profits in steep decline, because YES, labor costs MONEY especially professional athlete labor, and he went into fire sale mode to cut costs and restore the profits he had been enjoying.....so then the rebuilding begins, and the rest is history....this team has had very good to great talent come through the Steel City but us fans who've been off the porch more than once has been around to see them get traded away or gone in free agency which leads the management to do what? REBUILD--AGAIN!!! Look, I know that mistakes are inevitable because we as a species are predisposed to making them, but four winning seasons in 32 years? In order for a goal to have the best chance of being reached, you need first, A DESIRE........second A DRIVE TO BE THE BEST THAT YOU CAN BE......third PERSEVERANCE--because you WILL face setbacks and finally, AN ABILITY TO ADMIT WHEN YOU'RE WRONG AND MAKE NECESSARY CHANGES.....even though this is listed fourth, to me this is second to only desire in importance........having said all of this Paul Skenes is a dominating young pitcher, but based on this team's management's track record, I can't help but think about the time when we're gonna lose him and have to start over....AGAIN!! I don't want to see him go through what the great Nolan Ryan went through with the Astros for most of the 80's---he pitched awesome, but had no bats to back him up, because I don't believe Skenes or his agent will stand for that........this team has in my view when healthy and performing to abilities the best starting staff i've seen since the days of Drabek, Smiley, Smith and Walk......a lineup who could obviously be much better, and I think they will--and a nice bat can't hurt (but once again that costs $$$) and a bullpen despite the inconsistencies could be lights out. This team can be a winner IF MANAGMENT (MR. NUTTING)WANTS A WINNER so let's see what happens.....i'm not gonna tell people how they should feel but, what if Skenes ends up being the cats's meow for 4 years then leave in FA and the team completely goes into the tank for another decade or so? WIll they have a "Paul Skenes memorial bobblehead day"? asking for a friend

This is why I never complain about the players....my soreness is why they keep .400 Da'wreck around and no-hit Paines around. How many games has bad coaching and poor managerial decisions cost us this year already?? We should be over .500 .... period!

Jameson Taillon? Chad Kuhl? Adam Frazier? Even Joe Musgrove who you mentioned... Maybe I misunderstood the question posed but I can think of plenty of recent examples of the Pirates having legitimately good big league players who they traded for prospects because they didn't want to pay them
@jkozy1981
@jkozy1981 Месяц назад
Taillon had his second TJ, was 2 years away from free agency, and the Yankees came with a good offer. Taillon wasn’t a building block. Frazier also wasn’t a building block and Jack Suwinski, in spite of all his flaws, has been a way better player since that trade. Chad Kuhl was DFA’d by the Pirates after being demoted to the bullpen. He wasn’t any good and has been a journeyman since. Not good examples.
@jkozy1981
@jkozy1981 Месяц назад
Joe Musgrove was the most valuable asset they had when they started this rebuild. They got Bednar and Endy in that trade. He’s been a good #3 in San Diego but has struggled to stay healthy since he signed his extension with them. The rebuild Cherington did in 2020 was absolutely necessary. The jury is still out on whether it’s successful but it was necessary. Huntington left the cupboard bare the Pirates mediocre.

"They can keep Skenes 6 years unconditionally" They will lose a year of control if he places top 2 in RoY voting. So the correct statement is they can keep Skenes 5 years unconditionally. Also since he was not up in the first 2 weeks of the season, they will not get the PPI pick for him. I enjoy watching Skenes, but they kinda screwed up how they handled it. A month sooner to call him up and they get an extra 1st round pick. A month later and he wouldn't have the innings to finish top 2 in RoY.
@jkozy1981

Losing the year of control actually goes from 7 to 6 so they do have him for 6 years, not 5.

@@dkpittsburghsportspirates My point was that the pirates MO is to punt on the present in the name of a future that never materializes. When I see signings of decent talent for relatively cheap, Reynolds, Hayes, Keller, part of me has to think, "Think of all the prospects we can get for this down the road!" Had Pedro Alvarez turned into what we were all hoping for, he too would have been traded. -an aging Pirates fan

I must be missing something because I'm completely confused about DK's attitudinal stance in today's "Daily Shot." He remarked while answering today's J1Q question: "The only stuff -- the only feedback that I ever get -- is whenever it all has to be in one direction or it all has to be in the other... Baseball's got all kinds of gray matter. The worst front office ever is going to make some good moves. The best and brightest smart office ever is going to have some clunkers. The only way to look at it fairly -- never mind to intensely analyze it fairly -- is too look at all parts of it -- to give credit where it's due, and assign blame where it's due." 1. I question how much of the feedback that DK receives is all in one direction or the other. That would be a pretty harsh generalization, and it would be disrespectful to many Pirate fans who've presented intelligence and nuance in their comments about the Pirates not only here, but elsewhere. 2. There are a good number of Pirate fans who are absolutely looking at "all parts of it" in regard to this team. Otherwise, what reasons would Pirate fans have to stick around? Many of us are trying hard to analyze things fairly, and suddenly by regularly expressing some legitimate concerns we're somehow not looking at "all parts of it?" Professional journalists have recently been reporting facts about the owner and the front office that fairly begs the question whether this organization's priority is really about winning at all, or if it's really just about maximizing profits. 3. Tyler Glasnow said yesterday about Skenes and the Pirates: "It's great. I hope they can build around him, and like *spend some money* and get a good team together around him. There's so many good arms on the team, too-- like Mitch or Jones. Some great hitters, too. So yeah, it's exciting for them. That city loves baseball so much. I want them to have a good team." 4. John Smoltz on the Pirates on "The Rich Eisen Show" in June: "The Pittsburgh Pirates are the most intriguing team in the National League with their power arms at the front of the rotation, and they have a chance to spoil a lot of people's dreams if they make the dance. *But they've got to add. They've got to stop doing what they've been doing and kind of recoiling every time they get in a position of just adding talent and trading their superstars.* But I think the most dangerous team with Jones, and Skenes, and Heller and all the different things they have going for them, man, I would not want to play the Pittsburgh Pirates when it comes down to a short series, let alone any kind of series, and that's given they give the leash and manage the innings of those two young pitchers." 5. I love Paul Skenes and I'm appreciating him RIGHT NOW. I also love this Pirates team, and I want it to FINALLY have some success. As a fan who'd like to see the players receive adequate support from this organization in ALL ways, I'd like to see Cherington add talent on offense at the trade deadline because the players, especially recently, seem to think they have a shot at the playoffs this year (as if it's become a tangible goal). Try to give your readers and viewers a break, DK. Things are complicated enough regarding the future of this Pirates team. Try not to muddy the waters further by subtly (or not so subtly) reprimanding fan's supposedly one-sided viewpoints on top of everything else. In my opinion, you've fanned the flames yourself regarding this franchise on many occasions this season, often without balancing out those views at the same time with the "other parts of it." Intentionally or unintentionally, this episode feels like you're throwing Pirate fans under the bus to some degree. By extrapolation, you may be throwing Glasnow and Smoltz under the bus as well since they've also just publicly pointed out this organization's well-known tendencies regarding "team building" (or lack thereof).
