There's no such thing as cancel culture, that's a made up term by Republicans who hate facing the consequences of their actions. It's more like "Repercussion Culture".
This was an unfortunate event due to a bad decision on Will Smith’s part. However when a Black person is involved, punishment is swift and severe. Rules and laws are changed immediately and careers are forever flawed regardless of how stellar they were before. But Alec Baldwin can commit murder, walk around free, go home and forget about it and the media down played the event week by week until we forget about it because it wasn’t on an open stage watched by millions. Will Smith slapped Chris Rock with an open hand, no weapon and shouted cuss words about keeping his wife’s name out of a comedian’s mouth over a lame joke. The media won’t let this incident die. This is America. The Smith’s actions have negatively impacted Black people because America’s job is to bury Black people no matter their status, politics, or influence. In that moment, Will Smith forgot he was a Black Man in America. He opened the door to being cancelled. I hope he and his team are savvy enough to survive the backlash.
If people have learned nothing from The Oscars incident it is this, “Keep family business within the family, and do not get mad when the information you provide is utilized for humor.”

I agree with the proverb " Too much of anything is not good" Tony Rock personally attacked and dragged Steve Harvey for meeting with Trump to discuss black youth in 2016. He attacked his best selling book and his first marriage and disrespected Steve's current wife. He tried to discredit Steve's book regarding relationship advice, but his major focus was Steve meeting with Trump while other well known comedians jumped on the band wagon and joined in. Tony did all this because he was asked if he would be writing a best selling book like Steve Harvey and he became enraged He ended up causing Steve to lose a lot of his fan base, lost some gigs and eventually his radio show. It was interesting to note and watch in 2016 how it was all comedians jumping on the band wagon to tear down a highly successful comedian all under the umbrella of "comedy" They claimed to be so angry over a black man meeting with Trump, knowing he was looking for a black celebrity influencer. Yet none of them would address Kanye associating himself with Trump at that time and taking pics smiling side by side with Trump. Kanye quietly slid in and obviously became the black celebrity influencer for Trump, but all you heard was crickets from the same comedians and people that tore down Steve It's ironic how then Kanye comes back and encourages or incites violence against DL this year and the only comedian to rally or speak out and have DL's back is Steve Harvey, even tho DL was with Tony Rock against him in 2016.🧐🤔 Interesting... It's also odd that Steve is crusading for Chris Rock now, when his brother disrespected Steve's wife and played a major part in his downfall. Steve's reasoning in this case, he said he was torn between taking up for your wife and the slap. Why be torn? It's not like Chris and Will both couldn't be wrong at the same time. Sounds more like he wanted to gain acceptance of the former bullies through fighting for his brother Steve didn't defend his wife against Tony's or any of the other comedians attacks as they are now attacking Will's wife, so he should've sat this one out When Tony Rock was asked if he was acting out of bitterness and if there was some unspoken code about them doing this to each other, he said, "Nope I'm a comedian, I can say what I want to say." . Smdh🤔. That is the real problem and issue. Can u keep saying what u want until you either damage someone's livelihood or provoke a reaction simply because you are a comedian?? As much as people want to argue that people shouldn't react emotionally to words, they are reacting point blank. Words can be heavily damaging as well. Every war is started with words. Telling a random joke and continuously targeting the same people is two different things and isn't always seen as comedy. Chris has a history of targeting the Smith's and speaking negatively of Jaida's activism and negatively of Will as far back as the 90's. Tony has a history with the Smith's in being on their show All of Us for years, but now he's out calling Jaida a bytch in his comedy routines.. for what? We can keep pretending it's ok for people to say whatever they want and tell people not to react, but good luck with that. I don't agree with Will slapping Chris, but I'm not mad about it and I also don't think Will is the cause of comedians having to be careful. What Tony Rock did prior to Steve Harvey, who was simply more successful than him, was inexcusable and disgusting and there was no physical violence involved. Comedy has always been my best entertainment. As long as it's not too below the belt. But, majority blacks are naturally funny. It's always been a household/neighborhood pass time. It's in our DNA

It's called COMEDY because it's about JOKES and even analysis of something social or political in a joke. It is an ART. And like ART paintings, if you don't like it then don't look at it. But it does not mean that you get to cancel it so that all others do not get to enjoy it just because you don't like it.
You always get right! now I was strolling and ran across a program called “The Miss Pat show”. It’s funny as H… she’s a black comedian housewife with 4 children It’s hilarious.
It was planned to rip off the shirt to expose her breast, not the nipple. The nipple was supposed to be covered but it didn’t work out like planned. Hence, wardrobe malfunction.

Anybody that attends a DL show knows u will be roasted on the front row and at almost any show that uses comedians. I had my time at a DL show in West Palm Beach. If u can laugh at others and not urself, u don't deserve to enjoy comedy. Stay home if u cannot take being part of the show, otherwise enter at ur own risk, be a good sport and have a great time
DL you are so right. This will not only impact comedians but what about preachers? I know there are preachers from the so-call mega churches who have quite a bit of security but what about the other preachers who do not have this type of protection when they are preaching the word of God and someone takes offense and may charge toward the putlpit? I think they are in just as vulnerable a position as comedians.

DL is are absolutely correct. Another thing that must be clarified and refined is a protocol call for evaluation and triage of Comedians that are victims of assault and/or violence during the performance of their job. An EMT should be onsite to render emergency evaluation and care. Chris Rock, given his age and health history should have been taken immediately to a health care facility for appropriate medical evaluation and treatment as required.
I'm not saying that Will was right. Assault is a crime. But I'd bet money that the court jester didn't joke about the queen. He was known for making a "fool" of HIMSELF! The best comedy is based on YOUR real life (in my opinion). We live in a society of increasing acceptance of violent acts & normalizing of bad behavior. There is a comedic lesson here too. Your comedy act should not be at the expense of others.
I do hope Will won't lose his stellar career from this one lapse in judgment. Ten years is a long time to be barred from the Oscars and not have a movie out.

I feel like this is almost an exaggeration. Because there's no way somebody saw Will Smith slap Chris Rock and think "hmm if a megastar multimillionaire can slap comedians, then so can I". I feel like the typical audience knows their limits lol. And even if they don't, comedians have had shit thrown at them before. They've had people wanna fight them before. Will Smith didn't start this and I don't think he made it worse. It's not like we're seeing a rise in comedians getting attacked. And if we do, people will blame Will, but the reality is, there's probably already footage of comedians getting attacked somewhere, but if new footage arises, they'll blame Will even though that person would've behaved that way regardless. Will can be blamed for making those situations more NOTICEABLE, but he can't be blamed for making people attack comedians. That's happened for years. Seeing a rise in security doesn't mean we're seeing a rise in slaps. We're just seeing a rise in precaution. It's not like wardrobe malfunctions or something crazy on live shows never happened before Janet's situation either.
I have a question. When does repeated roasts aimed at a particular individual stop being comedy and starts being a problem? I really wished it was settled at a different time and place. Comedy is the last pillar of truth and harmony.

I feel that if I were Janet Jackson I would love it if people didn't mention an embarrassing moment over and over that clearly was not her fault. Will Smith situation is a different situation and honestly instead of talking about that ....how about mentioning to young men this is not acceptable behavior. We know it's affecting comedy but it's also affecting decisions of men and women. Keep your hands to yourself should be the next topic and going forward.
I heard about Chris Rocks incident at his gig the next night regarding a heckler interruption and Chris was immediately concerned and security came onto the stage and surrounded Chris as they escorted the unhinged guest out of the arena. It sucks.

People were attacking supermarket workers for toilet paper not two years ago and the world sadly didn't change its axis, it just acclimatised to it. Unstable outbursts have been escalating for a while now. Its just interesting who is being brought to account now. I'm not convinced this slap heard round the world has brought anything worse to the table than existed previously, but I'm sure many things will be attributed to it.
Comedy is a very important art form. Sadly, our society is becoming intolerant of self expression, opinions, etc. I think “the slap” is a reflection of our current society.
True!!! Comedians are the philosopher’s of today’s society. The Plato’s, the Socrates, the Aristotle’s, etc. They are the compass of the people. Therefore, without being over dramatic, it is realistic to conclude that we are witnessing the death of civilized society as we know it.
...but that does not make them gods. They can and are greatly flawed and can be manipulative in the way they ingratiate themselves with the power structure of that society. The society falling came way before. You all just didn't notice it because you weren't the targets.

I worked at a tv station as an engineer back in the 70's, we had a 3 second delay on all live shows back then... I watch comedians because I want to laugh. I wach all kinds. Richard Pryer, Ralphy May, D.L., Kevin Heart, Dave C., Katt and many, many others. If they're not going to be able to make me laugh in the future because someone has a bug up their ars...
The thing that wasn't fair about the Timberlake/ Jackson incident was Janet taking all of the flack. Justin Timberlake was a coward for not inviting Janet back when he returned to the Super Bowl for halftime entertainment. He was wrong for that and lost me as a fan.
I agree, she was dragged like she wanted that attention and a disgraced, Janet is a magnificent woman and entertainer and for her to be treated that way was disgrace, now fast forward there's entertainers that's darn near naked on some of theses award shows.

Comedy/satire has been around as an acknowledged profession/art form since the time of Aristophanes, the father of comedy, in 400 B.C. It is an absolute foundation of democracy, providing for the right of individuals in a civilization to free speech. The opposite to that is absolute authoritarianism. Add that to everything else that is happening / changing in the world right now...
But do they, though? Almost always? Any data to back up that claim? Seems skewed and biased against black stars. Sufficient data would be figures comparing those that end in a “bad way” to all black stars.

Will Smith is correctly handling this horrible situation. He has apologized, withdrawn his membership and is quietly off everyone’s radar. Did he damage his career? YES. Is it unrepairable? No. He will be out of the limelight for a good year but he will slowly get roles. The problem will be for those with a Oscar as the goal for the movie will they cast Will Smith since he can’t attend any activities or events by the academy. I also think Will needs to sit down face to face with Chris with a neutral interviewer and apologize in person. Jada has made a statement and that should be it.
Sad but true. My first thought 🤔 Now people will think its okay to walk on stage and assault performer's. The academy as well as WS owe Chris Rock monetary damages for pain, suffering and mental anguish. CR like anyone assaulted will require therapy for this trauma. Stay safe👌
