10/10 as the person that is always left with two spare screws after taking anything apart this was very informative and allowed to take apart my own dewalt and a good clean later the thing has torque in it once again. So far so good will know more after I actually need to drill something.

EXCELLENT! THANK YOU. I was able to save my drill and this video showed me exactly what to do so I didn't get at things that I didn't need to. I often wonder how many things get thrown away that can be easily fixed just by trying.

A very clear and well explained video, good to see that a little time spent repairing something avoids the chuck it mentality. Dewalt drills are easy to diagnose and repair ..... spares available on line, so go for it.

Thanks very much for the video. I was able to clean out my drill and hopefully give it another lease of life. I have newer, Li-on powered drills and drivers, but my old DeWalt is like a comfy pair of slippers. The only problem that I had was when I separated the two halves of the drill, a little spring clip pinged onto my bench. I went through the video but could not see the clip, then in a lightbulb moment, I realised that it was the little clip at the base of the drill that held the spare bit (which I never use anyway). Great stuff, thanks.

I have a 2-year old 18v Bosch drill/driver that would barely turn and immediately smoke when I pulled the trigger. I cleaned the commutator as shown at the 5:00 mark and it now works like new. It was much harder to access the commutator and brushes since the motor is smaller and I had to hammer it out of the casing. The gaps were completely filled but after 5min of scrapping it's back to new. Thanks very much for making this video!

Excellent. Well explained and easy to follow. Leaving out the brushes? I thought I was the only one who did that!

Make a commutator cleaning tool, I just take a broken hacksaw blade and grind it to the slot thickness and grind a hooked edge into the back. Used for that and for industrial sealer blades as well. While you were cleaning a drop of engine oil applied to the bearing and forced past the dust seal with a bit of pressure from a gloved hand wuld make it last a lot longer, adding to the lubricant in there.

Brakleen does wonders at removing buildup. Had a non disassembleable motor that was caked in buildup, just soaked it in brakleen and then rinsed it off with more brakleen, looks brand new now! I just needed to re-oil the bushings.

So satisfying to see stuff gets repaired. Great job! The only thing I would have done differently is to polish the comutator rather than sand it. Sanding the comutator shortenes the lifespan of the brushes significantly in my experience. Not a big deal in this case though, since it's relatively easy to replace.
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 7 лет назад
You can sand the worst off with 800 grit or higher wet and dry paper, then burnish with plain bond paper dampened with some light oil, then wash with solvent, clean out the slots again to make it last a lot longer. Only thing is to keep the brush area free of that dust, and do not use any silicone containing oil or grease there.
@DextersTechLab
@DextersTechLab 7 лет назад
yes, i probably should have polished it and i have some 8000 grit here i could have used! doh!

This is amazing!!! Though how did your drill perform afterwards? I just happen to notice very minimal sparks before the video ends. Thanks in advance for the response!

Thank you Dex, I have a Dewalt DW959 with the same sparking. The commutator is similar and the solution is the same for fixing it.

Well worth the trouble :-D, i've done the same with ordinary mains drills.

I need to do this to one I've been given. The problem is the fwd/reverse is not normal. The normal pressed in from the right side of the grip is reverse instead of clockwise!! Could this possibly be due to the two brushes connector wires being switched around by someone else in the past? Seems right to me as its a DC motor.

Hi my chuck control knob became stiff why ? Usually you can tighten it so easily but now it’s stiff but the drill is working fine!
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 7 лет назад
Got to do that to my one as well, though with a 3 minute battery life it really is getting old. The other one though had the battery die ages ago, so now it is running off a 12V SLA battery. I have a corded cordless drill.
@DextersTechLab
@DextersTechLab 7 лет назад
lol! TBH if you know the drill is good for many years to come, it might be worth buying a replacement battery or putting new cells into the old pack
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 7 лет назад
Pack was done once already, but case was cracking after a while, plus dead cells from the 1 hour charger cooking them, so got the wire conversion to use the battery was it. Lasts a lot longer as well per charge, 7AH as opposed to 2AH means a lot more grunt for longer. Those CS size NiCd cells are not cheap either.

I have a Bosch pks 46 circular that does this I’ve disassembled it and give it a good clean including stator etc new brushes and it still sparks and then cuts out I heard it could be the rotor out of balance?! I don’t know what that means and the commutator is all good have you any idea what may be wrong? Cheers mate good vid. 👍🏻

Great video, exactly what I needed to rescue my drill. What was used to wet the sandpaper? It sounded like PVC cleaner and I want to be sure.

I believe it was PCB cleaner, as in printed circuit board. It’s a commonly used electrical cleaning spray.

If you don't have PCB cleaner, rubbing alcohol will do almost the same job.

HI know it's a year ago but...hope you got it sorted. I had the same, the problem is in the alignment, make sure that the motor and gearbox are in a straight line when you fasten it back together. I chocked up the chuck end by about 10mm which corrected the drop of the chuck. if correct the two plastic case halves go together very easily, if you have to push hard it's wrong.

I replaced the brushes and the drill works but operates in reverse. Forward and reverse are backwards. What did I mix up?

CAREFUL rookies (including myself) I took my Dewalt apart to replace the switch, and the gear housing fell out. Gears, and goo everywhere! Not a chance I will get it back together. BE CAREFUL taking the bastard apart.
