Living in Canada, we will never see one unless you run across someone that already has it, and the process of ordering is a bit of a PITA with paperwork needed. So, I took a achance and ordered one, essentailly sight unseen without hands on. Tract makes the paperwork as easy as possible, took 6 -7 wks to gt thru all the hoops on Cdn and US side, really not a big deal as long as you are patient about it. Once they got the export permit, it shipped that day. Once I got it, it did not disappoint me in any way, it lives up to the hype. It does as advertised. Landed, it was nearly a 2k investment, but, worth it, well worth it.
I kind of dig the reticle. Not too busy, but has the x-mas lines, and empty center dot. What I would like to see more is the Crimson Trace 5 series reticle where there is no top portion of the vertical stadia.
There are good reasons to maintain some of the top portion of the reticle, but I also do not like it when it goes all the way up. Either way, reticles are very personal. Are you talking about the LR1 reticle from Crimson Trace? That one I really disliked. So much so, I decided to not review any scopes with it. It really goes counter to how human perception works. CT generally needs some serious help with reticles.
I'm dying to have you review the Maven RS4!! I want you to compare it to the Tract ELR, the Athlon Cronus, Nexus Element, and whatever other $1500-$2,000 scopes you want =)
I have reached out to Maven a couple of times and never got a reply, so I stopped trying. I did see it at CompExpo last year and I am fairly certain that other than cosmetics, it is an exceedingly similar scope to Athlon Cronus and Delta Stryker. Tract requires somewhat different lens choices, but is also similar.
I know that FFP scopes are the way to go for precision long-range shooting, but having to turn up to a higher power setting just to see the reticles; not a fan of FFP scopes, and I have three, and the TRACT Toric is one of the three, an excellent scope. TRACT spotting scope the next buy for me after I pay for school two more years.
Interesting. There is more design intricacy to FFP reticles. If everything is sized just right, the tree should be usable from about 10x onward. Below that, it should pretty much look like a simple duplex or #4 reticle.
A decent Chinese alternative is the Hawke Frontier 4-20x44 SFP with 1 inch tube. Nice glass, zero stop, similar 65moa elevation, just over 20oz. includes sunshade and aluminum flip up lens covers, and best of all on sale currently for $300 off that brings the price down to $399 at Cameraland in NY. Their 5-25x50 SFP 1 inch is on sale also for $300 off for $459 weighing in at a little over 20oz. and cones with the same accessories and zero stop with 51moa of elevation. They use the best glass their brand offers. The 30mm and 34mm versions are 2x to nearly 3x the price compared to these and use the same glass.
Just a heads up for anyone wanting a great deal for the Tract Toric 4-20x50 Mrad at $300 off Black Friday weekend sale for $994.00. The Toric 3-15x50s will also be on sale as well as their budget 3-9x (Philippines?). Sale prices won't show up until Black Friday.
I will send an e-mail out on my website with Tract deals today in the evening. Arguably the biggest deal is going to be the 12.5x50 binocular for around $600. That one is just crazy. I generally have a large post where I keep on adding Black Friday deals as they cross my path: darklordofoptics.locals.com/post/3014967/black-friday-and-other-deals
Another worthwhile mention, Cameraland has the Athlon Cronus BTR gen 2 4.5-29x56 for $1359, Ares ETR 4.5-30x56 for $899-$999 and $799 for 3-18x ETR, under $700 for Ares BTR gen 2 4.5-27x50 and other Athlons on Black Friday sale right now.
Virtually all scopes have it to some degree and it is far more visible with the camera than it is with the human eye. It is a good question and I'll make a note to go over it during today's livecast or next week's if we run out of time.
I just purchased this scope. At 4x I do not notice anything like what you see here. Very crisp out to edge of field. I think you are seeing camera position interacting with exit pupil in a not optimized fashion.
