Another favorite tactic of mine: I throw a 10x10x10 Gelatinous Cube at the party as a minor annoyance. Inside floats a 6x8x4 treasure chest. Once combat against the gelatinous cube is over, the party will naturally want to claim their prize. BOOM! IT'S A MIMIC!

Haha Brilliant! I loved the Can o' Whoopass so much I decided to come up with a potential description for it that could be used. Can o' Whoopass - A Metal Can with an easy to open top that has the words Can o' Whoopass on the side. If opened it releases an Air elemental that will go berserk and attack anything within 30 feet of the can itself. After 10 minutes the air elemental returns to the Elemental Plane of Air. Oooh! An even better idea that there could be "Flavors." Spicy for fire, Original for air, Thirst Quench for water, and ... I honestly can't think of one for Earth. Minty though might be poison or acid.

In one of my long running campaigns. The players had an encounter with a bandit who moonlit as a prostitute. Long story short, they brainwashed the bandit into thinking he was a Pirate prostitute. Flash forward 5 months IRL, the players are in the taverns back room preparing for the massive final battle with the BBG. I start rolling on the background (basically just to make the players nervous) I tell them they hear heavy footsteps. THUMP THUMP THUMP. The door is then kicked open with incredible force! With that at the top of my lungs I yell “YARR WOULD ANYONE LIKE A H***J*B?” The entire room lost their minds. It was chaos. In the end they recruited the Pirate prostitute to hand out cursed coupons that had a random negative effect. This actually worked so well about 30% of the BBG’s guards were immobilized. It was the funniest thing I ever had to DM.

Been playing for 3 years and DMed a one shot for the first time last month. The players were given a quest to hunt down a mysterious creature/force effecting the area. One of the quest givers is a mad scientist who asks them to bring back any interesting body parts, especially eyes, to make some amazing potions. After a surprisingly long session of getting through various puzzles and traps, they finally discover and defeat the Beholder boss. Of course they harvest several eyes and bring them back for their reward, only to have the mad scientist brew them some beauty potions. Yes my first time as a DM was a 6 hour long setup for a "beauty is in the eye of the Beholder" pun... no regrets :p

A rogue kept bragging about being the best while he was still low level. So, I threw the ole, 'old men in a profession is dangerous' at them. While in the tavern he tries to see if there was anyone they could steal from. So, who was at the other end of the tavern enjoying the finer off menu food without a care? Old Grogun the barbarian fighter. With a sleight of hand roll that failed he nearly took off the thief's head. Thanks to quick thinking he said he was just making sure the tiles on the wall weren't broken. Ole Grogun fell for the deception and the rogue sighed with relief...but only for a few moments. The old barbarian told him to wait while resting a heavy hand on his shoulder, grabbed the tile that the rogue was 'inspecting' and yanked it out with a chunk of wall before handing it to the rogue who nearly crapped himself just for the barbarian to say: "This one ugly. Needs fix."

I made a mini dungeon for the exact purpose of fucking with my players. While exploring the Underdark they came across an abandoned Mind Flayer outpost/laboratory. It was now home to a clan of Kobolds and their dragon master. The thing with Mind flayer structures is they're difficult to get around in since normally those living inside can levitate. The kobold had learned that they could crawl around in the science tubes and ventilation shafts to get around. They used these tunnels to set traps for any intruders. None of these were particularly deadly. A stink bomb, a bunch of old metal helmets falling from a false ceiling, a simple spike trap, and even having one of the kobolds sit in a hallways as bait before using gloves of Thunderwave to send anyone in front it flying back down the hall. But what made all of these traps better, was that every time the party would trigger one they heard dozens of voices just laughing at them through the walls. Oh they were pissed by the end. And then they had to fight a mutated dragon!

Just had one this session. My DM had us roll for death saves against enemies that were using non lethal attacks to try and capture us. The saves didn’t matter, but he wanted to put some extra drama in the session. What he didn’t account for was when our artificer’s goblin sidekick failed all his (meaningless) death saves. We all thought he was dead for about a half hour or hour, we even prepared a funeral brochure mid session, before our DM finally helped us realize the damage was non lethal and good old Droop was alive. Made for the most tense encounter we’ve had yet, and it was a clever if stressful way to troll with us.

To shorten a long ass backstory: One of our party members owns a bar in game and the cook is a succubus demon who always flirts with him. He's very concerned about keeping a lid on this situation. One day they have a food critic in the house and he wants to meet the cook. Player obviously wants to say no but then the succubus, demonstrating that she can magically disguise as a human, turns into a copy of him. And because I didn't want to pass up an opportunity to give my players a weird boner, I had her flirt with him, making comments about how "self love" is important.

My players had been hired to escort a caravan traveling from Rose Creek to Linhaven with various stops at small villages and towns on the way. They had finished the last leg of the trip and were about to enter the town of Linhaven. On the side of the road, carved in a large tree trunk, is a sign that reads "Welcome to" across the top, then a map of the town and "Linhaven" across the bottom. As I described the map, I set the map I'd drawn on graph paper down for my players to see. My players crowded around the map, each choosing a place they wanted to investigate. The druid, ranger and one of the Barbarians went to the Prancing Unicorn Inn for drinks, the rogue and the other barbarian went to the Wonders Of The World Curiosity Shop (the magic shop) and the Monk decided to check out Alcandice's Herbal Shop. Once the players announced where their characters were going to go, I casually slid the map behind my DM's screen and waited. Eventually, they wanted to go check out other shops. "Can I see the town map?" one of my players asked so he could plan his next destination. " What map?" I asked innocently. "The map you just had on the table," he replied, the situation completely going over his head. "You mean the map you saw carved in the sign next to the road? I don't recall anyone saying they copied or memorized the map." The look on my players faces was hilarious. I'd never trolled them like that before. Now they were lost in a strange town. I even told them, "Had someone the foresight to copy or memorize the map, perhaps that someone would've been awarded with inspiration." I doubt my players will ever encounter another map that they don't copy and try to memorize.

I like telling my players they're on the clock, but not alluding to what they're on the clock for. That's usually my way to speed the party along, but one time I was running a Candlekeep Mystery where there is an established time limit of 1 hour before the tower they were exploring rocketed into space. I used a stop watch on my phone and let it run while conversations/rp were going on. I would adjust it as they spent time exploring rooms. They ended up waisting most of the hour exploring the tower, but found out about the countdown timer in a secret underground chamber. They had all but 30 seconds to run back up stairs before getting toasted by rocket flames.

I love deliberately describing the scene in a way that throws off my players. Like nonchalantly saying, "You see fresh blood dripping from the walls" in the middle of otherwise innocuous details, describing the tavern's furniture and decorum in much greater detail than the NPCs inhabiting it, or simply describing an NPC the party know and love with malicious vernacular.

A favorite method of mine is teleportation traps. Generally once or twice a campaign, but it's a fun way to forcibly split up the party or get them from point A to point B very quickly. The first time I ever used it, it was in an old, crumbling castle where some of the magical defenses still worked. They were teleported to the castle dungeons, the majority of which had crumbled away and couldn't actually contain them - but it took them completely off-guard since they had literally just entered the castle and suddenly found themselves being teleported. Followed by a mimic encounter, of course.

No matter what the setting or plot, I find a way to sneak him in, and he’ll be selling items from our other campaigns (he once sold a player their characters shotgun from a previous campign). The most ridiculous Appearance of his was when he showed up in the Endless Space campaign we did as a Lumeris that set up shop close to the Academy and was on the payroll of Isyander. It’s a troll move on my part by far, but my players love him even so: they always yell “THERE HE IS!!!” with absolute glee as soon as they hear the voice. In our recently started Dark Souls campaign one of my players actually asked for THEIR character to be the Merchant to throw everyone for a loop. It’s glorious. He’s Patches’ brother XD

I used to run a years-long campaign of Orpheus (World of Darkness) where the players are either ghosts or people capable of projecting their soul out of their body (either through meditation or flatlining). The game's main bad-guys are spectres, basically evil ghosts so far gone their souls mutate into real horrors. One of these horrors is the Chupacabra. It has a bunch of twisted powers but the one I trolled my players with was it's ability to possess swarms of tiny insects or herds of small animals. I went with a murder of crows. There are also Reapers (very OP scythe-wielding, very intelligent, Grim Reaper looking spectres). Those had a frost aura which did actually neglactable damage compared to the scythe that one-shots them. In the end pretty much EVERYWHERE they went they were constantly asking "it's not getting colder, is it?" when things started to feel creepy for them. (I tended to have my named Reaper stalking them have the frost aura on by default as a calling card of sorts) They also were insanely suspicious of crows. That's because the longer they stayed at a location the more crows would just be in the trees, street-cables, etc... watching them. Cawing. They usually left before it was like 20 crows. Probably because the Chupacabra was subserviant to the Reaper and it's hunting hound of sorts and it's sole mission was to keep tabs on the player characters and if they were in a place the Reaper didn't want them sure enough more spectres would show up soon, or they even get a visit from the Reaper itself. While I used ambush tactics with the Reaper in places I never chased them with it. It always just went after them with a leisurely walking pace. It will get them eventually. It has time. Did I mention Orpheus is supposed to be a Horror TTRPG? Probably should have lead with that. Anyway cutting the long setup short: Somewhere along the lines I simply forgot about the crows myself half the time and the players always kept reminding me by asking "are there crows around?" and the like. There almost always were at least a few. Were they real crows or the Chupacabra? Honestly it almost never really mattered because THEY NEVER CHECKED. They always assumed the worst. In reality about half the times they stressed about the birds it was literally just crows being crows. Oh and they really get upset by fridges being left open or unexpected cold drafts in run-down buildings for some reason. Heh. I'm a horrible person.

Part of this curse is a javelin head that is binded to him, and when thrown returns like a magnet. the plan is for him to repair it and be able to give it elemental components through specialists. I once gave a player an item that was "cursed" in a very unexpected way. The player was a very indecisive rogue who would go into places they shouldn't despite warnings from me, the DM. On this one particular occasion, the person who's quarters they were stealing from was none other than Tasha the Witch Queen. Inside of her personal quarters, at the top of this school for magic, rested a pretty wicked looking sword, wrapped in silk inside of a wooden box. The rogue, not knowing who they were stealing from, agonized over whether to do it or not, when suddenly a voice told them to "Take it, coward!" With this sudden taunt, they stuffed the box into their bag and walked out of the school before Tasha returned home. As for the sword, the moment the rogue removed it from the box, the sword began to speak to the party. Instead of imparting words of wisdom, however, it insulted them and told terrible puns and dad jokes. The rogue and the party grew tired of the swords antics so they all decided to put it back into the box. Bad idea. Whoever wielded the sword was stuck with it, and if the wielder became separated from the sword for too long, it would throw a tantrum, casting Tasha's Hideous Laughter. The area of effect was 120 feet and the DC for saves were equal to those of what Tasha's would have been as an epic level character. They found some interesting uses for the Hideous Laughter aspect of the weapon, but it taught my rogue friend one very important lesson - always find out who you're stealing from.

What they failed to notice was that thesd guys were all poorly armed, armored, and were practically one hit kills. They kill a couple dozen commoners who were effectively defending their goods. One of the PCs left due to the excessive killing (out of game the player just couldnt keep attending) Next session will see them sneaking across town, covered in blood. They will also have to deal with hearing all the cathedral bells ringing in mourning; all of the wailings of widows, mothers, and children; and encounter countless wakes in the streets as well as heightened security and investigations. I'm DM'ing my very first campaign, and its for entirely new players so I've been making it and entirely original story and just making up a lot as I go. The most entertaining things I've made happen revolve around our homebrew 'feline' race wild magic sorcerer, Bingus. I managed to get an oversize d12 in a "defective dice" goodie bag so I've been letting them use that for all wild magic rolls.... first roll determines if wild magic activates but.... I created 3 x12 effect tables, one with good results, one with bad, and one with mixed/neutral... so the next roll tells me which table to pull from (weighted by their in-game morality choices) and the third grabs a unique effect. My best troll involves forcing a particular effect... The party decided to have a Viking funeral for their heavily damaged ship, and decided to use a spell to ignite it. And right as the ship ignited, all of Bingus's fur instantly shed in a large poof. A few sessions later another wild magic surge happened. This time the real rolls ended up doing something similar.... He turned blue.... entirely blue... and spent several sessions just being blue. Eventually he drank holy water which dispelled the 'curse' but it was rather entertaining how they kept asking "Is Bingus still blue?" and all I said was "Yup."

The door is locked and cannot be moved, nor damaged or effected in any way other than unlock. The door unlocks when the lock is picked, Knock is cast upon it or when someone asks the door to unlock. Once the door is opened the party sees that it is actually a portal to another plane of existence. Upon passing through the door they wined up on the other side. The portal is an illusion and the door is just a door.

Playing in Roll20, it's fun to sometimes edit the monster stats because there's more of a veneer of legitimacy for a second. Last weekend, my wife's Rogue makes a Stealth check. So, I edit the Perception of the spider she's sneaking by to +42. She calls "bullshit" when the spider rolls a 61 for Perception.

My players by now know, oh they Know, that I love my perception checks in any game where I DM. I used to call for perception checks but never told them if it was a success or failure. I just ask for the dice results and go from there. Eventually they wisened up to it so now I have each players dice pools for stuff like danger senses, perception, traps, etc all on a sheet behind the DM-screen. They KNOW I could be rolling for any of their "are we getting fucked over soon?"-pools... but I also just like to randomly roll a bunch of times, usually once for each player and make a concerned face looking at the dice, sighing, etc. Tends to keep them on their toes, especially since I tend to reserve it for scenes where shit could concievably happen to them.

Party is traveling through a tunnel that was punched through a mountain by a rampaging monster. In the middle of the tunnel they encounter a tall robed figures, tentacles dangling from its hood. It demands that the party drop their gold and depart, or it will eat their brains. Two party members decide to comply, they're too low level to fight a mind flayer! Third says to hell with it, charges on his horse. His lance strikes... and cuts the creature cleanly in half! The two halves then shriek, get up, and dart into a tiny side tunnel. On the ground the party finds the cloak, a dead octopus, and reptilian footprints.

Inspired by the 'Can O' Whoop Ass', allow me to present... [Jar of Beans, Spicy] A common-looking pocket-sized clay jar labelled 'Spicy Beans'. When opened or damaged in any way, the DM rolls on the Spicy Beans table to determine the outcome. SPICY BEANS TABLE [1] The jar contains common beans flavored with strong spices. Eating them dulls your ability to taste for 1 hour. [2] The jar contains only one bean that glows with a dim red light. When planted, the magic bean grows into a towering colossal beanstalk after one hour, easily reaching up into the clouds. The bean must be planted outdoors in good soil or the magic will not take effect. When fully grown, the beanstalk will immediately begin growing Needle Blights all along its surface, 1d20 to begin with and an additional 1d4 for each hour afterwards. The Needle Blights will defend the beanstalk, attacking any creature they see while inhabiting its surface and the ground in the beanstalk's immediate area. The beanstalk continues generating Needle Blights until it is destroyed. [3] The jar contains 2d4 common beans in a strange sauce that glows a dim red light in the dark. Any creature that consumes one of the beans temporarily gains 1d4 uses of a breath weapon (use the Burning Hands spell). This effect wears off one hour after the bean is consumed. [4] A Shambling Mound covered in baked beans erupts from the jar. It will attempt to flee towards the nearest swamp, forest, or other verdant natural refuge and attack any creature that gets in its way. [5] The jar releases the spell Stinking Cloud into the area, centered on itself. [6] 1d4 Fire Elementals erupt from the jar. They will attack any creature on sight, having been driven mad by their confinement in the jar. If there are no other creatures in sight, they will attack each other and then wander at random.

Pointed out an empty bucket in a room. Player jokingly rolled arcana, which I ruled as more of a magic sense ability instead of magic knowledge, but you needed to be proficient with it to use it this way. I told him he could sense that it was cursed, but no other details. He didn't go anywhere near that bucket. Every now and then I'll throw in a random empty bucket where it wouldn't be out of place. He doesn't even roll. He just avoids it. Nobody else wanted to go near it either. I to this day have no idea what that bucket would actually do if anyone interacted with it properly.

@@tennagon3822 What if, if they do not look into the bucket until they reach an important part of the story, the Bucket appears in place of that fancy item they need to progress, whether it’s in a quest or approaching the BBEG. The bucket had that exact item they needed the whole time, and you pretend it was, indeed, there the whole time. Hell, you can go to great lengths with turning that bucket into an important plot device. Perhaps it was made by a dying mage who needed to keep the magic item from the BBEG, so it was enchanted to follow around those who have a chance at defeating them. Or there’s a second, smaller bucket within. Its curse is how it follows the first person to view it through every single session they do with you.

For me, I very much have to literally do, very little. DM only of 2 to 3 years coming up (one campaign die from loss of all players (f), current campaign going past the first quarter of its second year). My Players are a real band of misfits, two out of four of em are DM's themselves or have been so they've been having a blast, but also like to theorize, or come up scenarios or solutions that are worse than I can imagine. I just have to bring out my note book an write down what they say quietly, or let them prattle off whatever the possibilities are in complete silence. We play online, and I have nearly wet myself finally bursting into laughing hearing one of them say 'HEY! I can HEAR your evil scheming DM smirk from here!'. Or, as some parties can be like, hoard things for ages without even checking wtf I gave up to them. They only 'roughly' ended up getting a friendly reminder of material in the 'party fund bag' holding a mysterious book that they got over twenty sessions ago an finally looked at it. Finding out it was tied to a high level Arch Fey who wants worthy folk to do tasks on their behalf for great rewards. I just gotta sit an wait for when they realize 'wait something up isnt it/we forgot to do something important' and I just gotta be silent. Best trolling is just rolling on by quietly heheheh...

Oh man, I have one. I introduced this Stoner druid halfling to my PCS think Tommy Chong if he was a Halfling. Anyway, the way his magic works if he believes and the PCs believes it will work. He told the the PCs to go find a Magical Bull, that will help them greatly in their adventures, before meeting them one of the PCs had a dream about riding a Bull that when they hold their hand up in the air it will turn them and the bull invisible. The PC(Rouge) heard of the Dream Bull and had to have it. They went looking for the Bull brought it back to the Druid, the Rouge asked about does it turn u invisible, the Druid then explained how he would have to take literal bullshit and rub it on him and the poo will turn him invisible after saying the magic Words...E-I, E-I, OOOH. One PC said "That's Horse shit" The Druid simply replied "No sir, Bull shit I was very clear on that"

Frog analogue creatures. they have been a trouble for the players all throughout the games we have played. even online games frogs were a hinderance to some progress. My favourite creation is a cr 1/2 tiny frog, spore frog. while it deals only nonlethal damage with bites, if it is killed or hucked it will burst into inhaled poison in a 5 ft burst. this is a chain reaction to other spore frogs in the area. not a strong poison to deal in dmg for 3 rounds. this is still perfect for their foraging as animals dont have a high intelligence. these aberrations will grow from the spores over time and can spread by the adventurers themselves if their gear isnt clean of bigger bits of the spore frog.

IDK if there is an actual video for this but I am just going to post it here. I just joined a campaign today and have already speed run my character to death took about an hour irl time. bit of back story this game takes place in a broken country that had a magic glass organ that kept it as a eutopia well hundred years ago it was shattered and a apocalypse happened now it is made of a few major city states. Out party is starting in Strife which is very dystopia esc with everyone looking the same doing the same things just that creepily unison thing. So my Reinvent warlock decides to get the shard of the organ from the lord and decides the best way of going about that is threatening various government employees and mob bosses to get him an interview. well long story short I end up in the main building of the lord and are talking to the secretary have a conversation the other pc who is a guard brings up that I have been causing disturbances, so the secretary who is also right hand man to the lord and the executioner asks me to place my head on the desk. Me being and overly cheerful individual with no sense of self preservation and one goal I do so and promptly get my head removed. now the next morning I am tapping on the pc guards window and asking when I get my interview with the lord, which is where we left off. Also turns out when you threaten a mob boss you get a gun pointed at your face, also turns out some mob bosses don't have the guts to pull the trigger when dared. In essence I have become a living sleep paralysis demon for another player.
