Whats up with the CDI deflection? Full scale side to side is 20 deg total. However hes only spinning 10 degrees on the CRS knob and the CDI is going full scale top to bottom (20 deg). Concept makes sense, but the animation and explanation is flawed

Wow what a great training video. Your technical knowledge and presentation is top notch. Will be watching more. Did my training 20 years ago never took the test. Climbing back up the mountain. At least now there are great teachers like you on the internet to help.

The 1-in-60 works really well, I just understood it after watching. I tried doing it in a simulator, surprisingly it works very well! Hoping to apply in real-life when I get the chance to fly again.

At some point will you be discussing holds? Less so pattern entry and more so executing the hold itself (wind correction, VHF vs GPS, etc)

Great video! I’ve subscribed and have watched many of your other ones. Can you give some advise on how to more easily fly and arc with a Garmin G5 HSI? I believe a big failure of the unit is only having one knob to move the heading bug and the course pointer. To fly an arc where I have to continually move them both, it means constantly going into the menu to select which one the knob should move. In other words, move course needle, quickly go into the menu to select the heading bug, exit the menu, move heading bug, then back into the menu to select course pointer, exit menu, move course pointer, rinse and repeat about 20 times. Is there a better way?

If you use the 1-in-60 rule and the 1% of GS, you get this small equation for the lead-out radial: 6 x GS / 10 * DME.

KYKM LOC-BC-B has quite a long arc, with an off site VOR, altitude step downs for terrain, and the reverse sensing of the back course final.

Great video! Thanks! Also, on a different note...what is the name of the music at the very beginning?? It is AMAZING. I really like it.

I don't think the second to last question about the turn in was answered. My answer is that once you hit the lead-in radial and start the turn-in, you should switch from VOR to LOC frequency so you roll out on the LOC. The VOR is only valid for the arc portion of the procedure and the lead-in radial is really the last valid VOR fix when flying on the arc, MITUE on r233 is an IF fix for either procedure turns or traffic straight in off the ocean its not really used for the arc. The example plate was North Bend, Oregon, KOTH aka southwest oregon regional, ILS RWY 4

Am I the only one to have a 10 degrès deflection each side on the HSI ? so If you apply this method, you end up with 20 degrès segment... Thxs for the great videos ;)

Its usually 10 deg either side of center on all the aircraft I fly. I think their animation is wrong as well. CDI is deflecting 20degs, however the course is only changing 10

How do you work out the 60:1 ratio
@mytech6779
@mytech6779 4 года назад
Just saw an interesting bit on this plate [FAA] OTH ILS-RWY4, this is regarding the procedure turn option not the DME-arc, the profile view says "remain within 10NM" but it doesn't say from what point. The threshold, FAF, IAF, VOR? VOR doesn't make sense as the IF is on the arc at 16NM. but that still leaves 3 options
@peternau1346
@peternau1346 Год назад
Great question. It means remain within 10NM of the "procedure turn fix" (the fix at the top of the profile view), in this case, OTH NDB (i.e., EMIRE waypoint and not the OTH VOR). The 10 NM applies to the situation where OTH NDB is used as the IAF, you fly outbound on the 226 deg radial, and then do a procedure turn to reverse course direction. This is what the top part of the profile view depicts.

I've been practicing DME Arcs quite a bit with my Instrument training and I like doing them. They're not so bad once you get to understand them. Also, what is the name/source of the piece of music played at the very beginning of this video?? It was very nice!

Great stuff, but 1:17 is just too long. My brain is done at 40:00. This would be better in three parts.
