Wonderfully made, this documentary about the great Russian composer it is just perfect. And who best to guide us through Shostakovich Opus than Valery Gergiev?.. But don't disregard John Hurt as the voice/narrator. I enjoyed (and learnt) very much watching this Video. Thanks so much for uploading it 🙏

Beautiful documentary on this great composer. He had a hero, the people, in his music. Very well put. He loved Mahler, and understood the pain of people being rejected and under rule. You can hear the similar pain in Mahler's music. They would have been great friends.♥️ Thanks again for amazing film 🙏🏆🏆

This is for me a very important video to se and listen to….But I miss Kondrashin in the movie…

I’m a musician who has performed, conducted and taught the music of Shostakovich my entire life. When he died in 1975, the world lost the last truly great classical composer. There has been no one else of his stature since. But I have absolutely no respect for the man who calls himself a maestro and is willing to sit in the pocket of the little man whose tyrannical and authoritarian behavior has cost the lives of thousands. The maestro immediately ran to his side to support the madness. Maybe the little man will give him a supply of toothpicks to twitter in front of the musicians who secretly ignore him and laugh at his ridiculous mannerisms. They are not following his powerful leadership. They are performing the music in spite of his ridiculous musings with the toothpick. I hope the West never welcomes him to their money again. But I truly am sorry for the wonderful musicians who must continue to endure his musical incompetence and corruption.😢

ゲルギエフはショスタコーヴィチに共感している。ショスタコーヴィチもゲルギエフも、自分の国に残った。ロシアに残り、その中で音楽活動をした。そういう意味ではロシアに寄り添う音楽家と言えると思う。たとえこれがロシアのショスタコーヴィチ宣伝番組だったとしても、ゲルギエフは現代のショスタコーヴィチと言えるかもしれない。

I wish people would stop using words like "descriptive" about music. Music does not describe. It is not a descriptive art. Even opera and vocal music (these may convey ideas, but still can't describe), even more so instrumental music (which is entirely concerned with emotions and nothing else except emotions). To say that the Leningrad Symphony "describes war" is to reduce great music to nothing. Otherwise a nice documentary. But you won't miss anything special if you don't watch it. Much better listen to Shostakovich without the burden of biography, ideology and other descriptive nonsense. His music, like all great music, is complete in itself. It needs a great performance and a receptive mind, nothing else.

Gergiev is crazy. Ten minutes in and his conclusions are almost universally beyond the facts of Shostakovich's life. Too bad Kondrashin is gone.

5:17 why not just say he got 2nd prize? For the same reason Rachmaninoff is hardly ever mentioned as getting 2nd prize for piano when he was the same sort of age - because they are inordinately adored in the West. Prokofiev was arguably better than either I come from the same teaching line as Shostakovich (sort of - my teacher's teacher's teacher was Nikolaev).

Dear mr Gergiev. No matter how great a conductor you are, the Ukranian people will look back at you as the one who took Putin's side in the war. That's why you were ousted in Rotterdam and Munich. Shostakovich on the other hand loved the Ukrainians and loved to spend time among them, and wasn't all that fond of autocratic leaders.

Fascinating documentary..too bad the despicable Gergiev is the narrator!
