To all the people saying this is out of tune, here is a quote from an English conductor/cellist Benjamin Zander talking about his teacher Gaspar Cassadó, "... one day he was playing a Dvořák concerto and he was playing like a pig, it was just awful. And you know I was a hot young cellist and I thought the maestro is playing like a pig, because he didn't practice all the time but he was a great cellist, maybe the greatest who ever lived, it could be. He didn't practice so sometimes he didn't play well. So, he was playing terribly and I looked at my next-door neighbor and tears were streaming down her face... I remember saying to myself, 'Oh, I see it. It isn't about how he's playing. It's about how he's being' He (Gaspar Cassadó) managed to touch that woman sitting next to me in a way that most musicians actually never do because they're so focused on playing really really beautiful... Your playing is only a vehicle to the heart. It's a roadway to the heart. It is not the heart itself."

Considering the dedication and effort of many musicians, I also believe this competition should not be political. However, think about the music and life of Shostakovich. He wanted to be recognized solely for his music, but the era he lived in was one where society overwhelmed the individual. Shostakovich composed intensely amid the inescapable currents of history, and his works are difficult to understand without considering his era. His works serve as a kind of historical testimony. In this sense, I found Udovychenko's performance deeply impressive. There may be differing opinions on the outcome of this competition, but I hope we refrain from harsh criticism of one another. Everyone was excellent, and I hope we can offer sincere congratulations to each violinist we support.

This is not some local competition in some small town where unjustness can be swept under the rug. This is THE violin competition, this is the most prestigious competition for violinists and unfairness and politics will not be tolerated by the people who listened to the competitors for a whole month. Everyone knows what's up, everyone realizes that musicians like Kevin Zhu who they didn't even place in the top 3, like Hana Chang and Ruslan Talas who didn't even place top 6 were more deserving than Dmytro since the beginning of the competition and were just robbed because of politics. The harshness of the comments is justified and I hope people keep on speaking the truth because the truth is a beautiful thing and there's no hiding behind it.

@TobyIKanoby
@TobyIKanoby 2 месяца назад
@@mariorobe4805 I disagree, from my point of view. I didn't listen for a whole month. Probably not much more than a few hours. I have people close to me who did, and it is a bit annoying to me. Anyway, my point, I did have hearing samples all over the competition and listening to this guy (and watching) is what I enjoyed the most, before I knew he was Ukranian. So in my case your argument is completely invalid. I can only talk for myself. But I do have one more thing to say, If he won purely by politics (which obviously is complete nonsense, he did his work to get there), what is wrong with having compassion with a people? Is it really that bad? Tell me why please.
@mariorobe4805
@mariorobe4805 2 месяца назад
@@TobyIKanoby Because it's not about compassion, it's about the truth. The truth is often times uncomfortable and hard to digest, we can sugarcoat and find ways to justify the results but anyone who seriously listened to the competitors for the past month knows who deserved to win the competition that's why so many people keep reacting negatively to the results, and keep in mind this is not a minor reaction, there are hundreds of people protesting the result, especially those who listened to the whole performances, not just snippets. Everyone knows Dmytro did not deserve to be 1st, not even in top 6, in this competition he was among the weaker violinists unfortunately. Everyone knows it was politics to give him the win especially when a violinist like Kevin Zhu didn't even make top 3 when he should've clearly been the winner, imagine that, they didn't even place him in top 3, absolute ridiculousness, and violinists like Hana Chang and Ruslan Talas didn't even make top 6. I don't get how someone can see all this unjustness and just say that politics weren't involved in the decision of the jury, ridiculous.
@elyzander
@elyzander 2 месяца назад
Anyone who disagrees with the jury's decision (for which there may well be a number of reasons) should probably endeavour not to leave any comments here that are pejorative, insulting, or degrading. Experience has shown they would soon be deleted anyway. But perhaps the social-media team will accept critical comments as long as they contain well-founded arguments and are not just emotional, antipathetic expressions of displeasure. Come on, let's give it a try!

The jury members could differ widely in their scores which should have been published, as is the practice at Shanghai Competition. There in Shanghai one judge gave the highest score to the winner, while some other judge ranked him as sixth among the six finalists. I was amazed at how widely those judges differed in their scores. But the whole thing comes down to s imple math: the scores of all judges given to a particular finalist are summed up and divided by the number of jury members to find the acerage score. For instance, Midori could give the highest score to Yoshida girl, Mr. Sitkovetsky could vote for Kevin Zhu as the winner, some might vote for Eli Choi or SongHa Choi, while others scored Joshua and Dmytro much higher than anyone else. This is all too subjective and music is not a sport.

If Dmytro is able to gather full houses he may sign a lucrative contract; if not, his wins won't count. You are absolutely right: if his career were very successful after Montreal he would hardly need any other competitions because a soloist in demand can earn more for a single concert than his prize money for the entire competition. Some examples are Chloe Chua and Maria Duenas. These two violinists are in high demand so they just do not need to participate in any competitions.

Anyone who complains about Dmytro winning has no real grounds as to why they believe he shouldn’t have won. They can’t say nothing more than “he played out of tune” or “he is bad” but cant say where or how. Theres no concrete explanation. If you look at his bio versus some other competitors, you’d see he has a lot of competition experience, including 3 other 1st place awards. He has competed since 2017, two 2nd placings, one 3rd. 6 total competitions. Thats 4 more than Kevin Zhu has, which many seem to think the 1st prize was stolen from. I disagree. Kevin is a phenomenal player but it comes down to a lot more than just “i like him more.” These are international competitions. Not talent shows. If you dont like it, too bad. I think this guy is having a lot of double moral standards, if you don't shake the hand of Repin then quit also to the points that he gave you and speak loud about the situation in your country. He is just disrespectful. Imagine that David Oistrakh, Rostropovich and Richter will reject to collaborate with Karajan because he was a member of the Nazi party (he was twice because he forgot he was inscribe once) to protest about all the millions of victims but NO, music was more important for them and luckily we have those gems. I hate Putin and and the regime but music is beyond all this bullshit.

I think he (and the judge) should better get disqualified. First: Ukrainians Dmytro Udovychenko did by far not play as well as Kevin Zhu, who is not, but looks Chinese (The populistic mindset in western nations largely is against China. In US Chinese people nowadays get heavily discriminated) Sure not first prize on this level. The decision seems to be only a political one. Dmytro himself partly did win thanks to a Russian composer, but did not shake hands with the Russians judge, unbelievable.

@@musicclassic5938 Really? Shostakovich was humiliated by the regime puppets and praisers just like Mr. Repin. The question is, if Mr Repin were a Shostakovich contemporary, wouldn't he had joined Chrennikov's gang? I think he would. And unlike Repin, Shostakovich had courage to admit that his music written to glorify communist party related bulshit was wrong, while Mr Repin and his wife take grants and honors from the regime without any doubt. Shostakovich survived by chance, and not thanks to "mother-russia".Having read your comments, I also will surprise you telling that in Ukraine we don't hate people just for russian origin (imagine, one of the greatest Ukrainian novelists, Marko Vovchok has russian ethnicity), but yes, we hate those who want us dead. And no Ukrainian media has told anything shaming Dmytro for his choice.

@@ivannak6864 I am glad to hear that Dmytro was not reprimanded for picking Shostakovich. Just for you to know, I am a Moskal (Russian) married to a Ukrainian woman from Poltava. Our family are Christian believers and we do not support any form of violence. As for Mr. Repin, as Jesus said in His Sermon on the Mount, "Do not critisize (judge) and you won't be criticized (judged)." This competition is about music and artistic performance so stay away from politics! If Queen Mathidle invited Mr. Repin to sit on the jury, respect the choice of Her Majesty and do not demonstrate your lack of culture and courtesy. Her Majesty was kind enough not to strip Dmytro of his award for showing this disrespect. He did not just show it to Repin; he showed it to the Belgian royalty who invited Vadim Repin as the youngest ever winner of Queen Elisabeth Competition. My Ukrainian wife shares this opinion because she is a highly educated and cultured person. And the organizers of Queen Elisabeth competition emphasized before the auditions that they would not tolerate any political overtones on display. The Belgian Queen underscored emphatically that every talented musician is welcome in Belgium, regardless of his or her citizenship or national identity.

@musicclassic5938: I'm glad that you and your wife are in harmony with your views. Let me guess, neither of you have been to Ukraine since 2022 or even longer? You call yourself a Christian and quote Christ's words about not judging others, yet you spread falsehoods about this young man, whose hometown is being turned to ashes, and my country. That contradicts Christ's teachings. I agree that a music competition should be free from political engagement. It would have been political if Dmytro had refused to shake hands with someone who voted for a political party he dislikes. However, supporting war and killing is not a political question; it is a question of morality. I cannot imagine my great-grandfather, who fought against the Nazis in WW2, shaking hands with someone who thought the Nazis were right, especially during the war. I, labeled a Banderovka by Soloviev and Skabeeva, and my husband, who is from Donetsk with and has Russian roots, totally understand Dmytro.

Despite the opinion of different people, I think it was a fair decision, If you think it was political means you didn't listen the competition or just you don't have enough knowledge about. I attended many of the days and the level was very high, and at least 4 of them would be fair winners, and it's possible to have different criteria about, but if you are not able to see beyond the political topics you just don't understand about this. Apart from that, what he did after is simply not acceptable and disrespectful.
