Do’s & Don’ts of the StairMaster | And How it Jumpstarted my Weight Loss

Personally, I find the StairMaster to be one of the most challenging pieces of cardio equipment. Where the treadmill and elliptical can allow room for a lackadaisical attitude, the StairMaster does not. Within 10 minutes you WILL be sweating.
When done consistently and using correct posture, I feel confident saying you will see results. Not only will the StairMaster improve your cardiovascular endurance but it will also improve the strength and definition in your legs.
If you really want a challenge consider doing intervals. One minute at level 1 and one minute at level 20 - and alternate for 10 minutes. Eventually you may also want to consider some ankle weights or perhaps a weighted vest.
As an aside, in 2001 I watched live from my home - as so many did that day - and saw the 2nd tower of the World Trade Center be hit by a commercial plane.
The World Trade Centers were 110 stories each. Some might find it somber, but I think of those people stuck in the stairwells. I think of the firefighters - who chose to go UP the stairs when everyone was coming down. And in some way I walk and run for them. Knowing that any day could be “my day” and at the same time wanting to be prepared for whatever physical challenges life might throw at me.
You never know when you might need your cardiovascular endurance. You never know when you might need your strength. So be prepared and be grateful for the opportunity to get and be prepared.
Yours in health and love... Colleen

At first I wouldn’t last more than 15min. I felt Like I was dying. Now That I’ve been using it for 3 months straight (or at least every other day in between) I am able to last 50 minutes at pace 12. Since last week I started trying with 13❤

I’ve been embarrassed about how long I do on the stairs but I’m glad I’m doing it right. I do a few minutes at level four, take a break and do something else like treadmill and then go back do a few more minutes and repeat this until I reach my time goal for the day. I’m at 12 minutes rn and 3 used to be a struggle for me period. Can’t wait to be able to go longer and faster! Thank you for this video ! 🙏

I've grown very fond of the stairmaster. I change it up. I usually do level 4/5 then jack it up to level 8/9 for 1 min then drop it back down to 4/5 to drop my HR. My goal is always to compete 100 flights which usually takes me about 35-40mins.

Man, after watching this, I can confirm there's a lot of people who hold on for dear life, as I've just recently started hitting the gym, since it will be getting cold eventually. I don't know a ton about working out or cardio yet, but I'm glad I didn't end up being one of these. The one thing I was guilty about at first was overstepping, but otherwise, I tackled the stairmaster pretty well. Good posture is so important when just walking and jogging. So you have to apply that mentality to the stairs. You also won't get the benefits of using the stairs if you use your hands to lift. You won't get the burn or the satisfaction in knowing it kicked your ass. After about 15 minutes, you want to stop. It's absolutely grueling, sometimes monotonous, but so worth it. I eventually started going for a full 25-30 minutes, but right now it's still absolute torture.

There are different ways and techniques to use the stairmaster. If youre a beginner, always do the basics first and go slower. But when you have done the stairmaster for a while and know your body, have good posture and engage your core, you can use the stairmaster in different ways and go faster without too much body stress. Such as adding ankle weights, side stepping, running up the stairmaster for hiit, going lower for more glute engagement, etc. There's no one way to do it.

I like the stairmaster because uou can get your heartrate in the red without a lot of movement. I am trying to do 50 floors a session at this point, and i am more or less just starting out. As someone who has lifted for over 20 years, but more or less completely neglected cardio fitness...phew! It is kicking my @$$. But, i am going to stick with it as best i can.

Good video but I would not suggest doing the stair climber without holding onto the guard rails. This is quite dangerous and if you trip and fall can cause serious injury. This is also a form of ego climbing. You should hold onto the handles or rails while maintaining upright posture and ensuring that you are holding on for balance and safety only.
@Solvetcoagula

Great video! I've never seen someone run on a stairmaster, had no idea it was possible. I'm not so sure I agree that "understepping" is cheating. My feet are way to big to comfortably put my whole foot on the step as they get smushed if I try to put the majority of my foot on the step. Why do you consider "understepping" cheating?

Great video! So i’ve been doing the stair master for about 2 months now. I started at level 6 pacing myself, now I’m at level 9-10 on and off. Now level 6 is when I’m still going but what i’ll call a “break” for water. So my question is can we at least still place our hands on the rails just as support? I have a straight posture and i’m not putting any weight or pressure on the railings i’m simply just setting my hands there. I wouldn’t want to cheat myself knowing i’m putting all this pressure and all my weight onto the railings.

Can I use a back brace while doing this for posture correction???
@mcolleencasey
@mcolleencasey 3 года назад
If the back brace is due to a a previous injury than you may want to heal up a little more. You definitely don’t want to aggravate your back further; maybe start off with the recumbent bike. If it’s not due to an injury than I would encourage you to be patient and do what you can for as long as you can without the brace; even if it’s only 5 minutes. Then next time try for 6 minutes and the next 7 - and so on and so forth. It’s a slower process but you won’t need the crutch. Once you get use to a crutch, it’s very hard to ditch it. Be consistent, patient and don’t be too hard on yourself. You got this!
