Most people save their $2 bills, but if you tried one in a vending machine, would it work? I know Walmart's self-checkout lanes accept $2 bills. The food vending kiosk where I work accepts $2 bills and even has the $2 logo on it :)

We noticed - after we brought the footage back. But it wasn't working either way because it wasn't programmed for $2s, as described later in the piece. We just regrettably used the wrong shot there.

At 0:26 you are supposed to choose the metro card and amount you want to pay and then you press cash for method in paying and then check if it works. If you try to shove it in without that it wont work for any bill

True, but it still doesn't take $2 bills. The machine even states that it takes $1, $5, $10, etc. This was just a better shot to visually communicate the idea. Thanks for watching!

It shouldn't be a choice, if the machine physically can validate its authenticity, then it should have to accept it. It is legal tender, just like if I went into a store I could buy a huge TV with quarters.

I work in a supermarket that had installed self-scan registers around the time the newer $5 bill came out we had to wait for somebody to program and so it could accept those.

Mostly it's a problem with change. Most vending machines only dispense coins as change, so, per default, they only accept $1, and the higher amounts ($2 through $20, or even $100) are turned off to prevent excess change. That's a high-end vending machine though. Most don't have a firmware program like that, and will only accept $1 bills at all.

I know a pharmacist who makes deliveries to amish communities and he says they always pay with two dollar bills. I found that rather odd.

Those Claw vending machines for the kids that you see at Wal-Mart and Golden Corral with the stuffed animals usually take them, and are marked as $1, $2 or $5. The Self-Checkout machines at Wal-Mart & Home Depot will also take them, but not give them back as change. The slot is only marked as Cash. I wish you could draw them from the ATM, then more people would use them. With most cheap snacks costing more than $1, a $2 dollar bill makes more sense now. I guess the vendors only associate $2 bills with children. ♣️💚♦️♠️.

As the video says, most machines will take $2s... but the vendors have to flick the switch that allows them to do so. I don't think you'll get ever $2s from an ATM, as they are too small of a denomination. But it is good to see that some of the big brand stores are beginning to accept them.

Other reasons would be the potential for counterfeit notes not good enough for a person to be suspicious, but good enough to fool the scanner, and the fact that it is rare to sell expensive merchandise in vending machines (with the exception of Dubai).

They haven't made them since I believe 1996, so if you have one, they are at least 20+ years old. There is some value there. Try eBay.

I've heard the horror stories about bills and vending machines... Such as if you put a real bill that's not a $1 into a drink machine, it'll take it AS a $1. Pull the return lever? you get change for a $1. buy a drink? You get the drink, and change as if the $10 or whatever you put it was a $1. Got any complaints about getting taken? You're fucked.

Actually, most vending machines DO take them, as this video describes. It's just that they are not programmed to when they are set up. Someone just needs to turn the setting on, and $2 bills will be accepted.

They can take up to $10 as far as I've seen. You'll just get a bunch of dollar coins (or a lot of quarters) back. Watch this video again and freeze it when he shows the inside and outside controls. You can see that the machine can be programmed to take a number of denominations.

Really! MTA Accepts 2$ bills. If you actually watch the video closely you will realize the Metro Card dispenser wasn’t even ready to accept ANY money. It said “start” to purchase any card it will display “insert X.XX money”. Thisfore discrediting this video

We noticed that after the fact, but they weren't working either way until the machine was changed per the settings described in the video. It's just one of those things we didn't catch. We wish we would have used a different take!
