Hello Kev, it might be worth trying some more fully submerged plants in your ponds since they have great visibility, for instance there are plenty of native vic milfoils that do really well submerged or potamogeton and hornwort. But non-native submerged plants include ludwigia, Echinodorus, Java moss, egeria and so on.

I'm interested in how you pump water with air! I like your bottom up water flow method, to collect sediment under rick and away from people. I like the air pump method for the highest standard of safety (I get that 24 v is already very safe). I'd like to see how you put these two together.

@Ozponds

Absolutely 👍 can never have too much filtration.
@jerrychetty2524
@jerrychetty2524 2 года назад
Hi Kev, does the flush out pipe with the valve at the bottom of the bog filter have to be connected to manifold structure or is it just an open end piece of pipe inside the filter. As I will be using 9mm gravel stones as filter media in my bog filter I am building with bricks and concrete, (should I drill many holes in the pipe and have a end cap on it inside the bog?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 года назад
I prefer to keep it open. The idea is that the very bottom of the bog has a void area. That can be created with large rocks, milk crates, large pipe, anything you desire (so long as it can withstand the weight above it). The clean out or flush pipe has access to this “void area”. So if you are using 9mm gravel you want to make sure that the gravel can’t enter the void space. I hope that makes sense.

what about in countries we get snow/frost and cold winters, would the slow flowing bog filter be likely to freeze?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 3 года назад
Quite possibly it’s not something I have first hand experience with maybe other subscribers could comment further. I would imagine that a contain bog might freeze but a large in-ground bog could probably run right through. If you use a container bog you could always shut it down for the winter.

@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 года назад
Finding the components to build the chamber is giving me a bit of grief. A simple air pump is easy enough but if I do it I want to setup a decent flow. At the moment you’re only the second person interested in seeing one so unfortunately it’s not high on the priority list.
@Matt-cn1eh

@@Ozponds thanks for the reply, well hopefully it will be important soon. Bubble pump systems are great and I follow someone else who makes organic pools using them with no other system and the water is as clear as yours. David pegan is who was talking about.
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 года назад
I love David’s pools. I watch all his videos and have read his book. I even made his bubble pump setup in my back pond, which is here on RU-vid 👍 If I do a video it will be an airlift that can move water to a seperate filter. With his pools the filter is inside to pond. I want to try and create something seperate that can then be cleaned easily. I hope that makes sense.
@Matt-cn1eh
@Matt-cn1eh 2 года назад

Love your informational videos, I noticed you didn't use aquablocks in the wetland filter. Whats the point of having aquablocks down in there, what do they do? Are the rocks alone good enough?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 3 года назад
Thanks Denis. The aquablox would make the filter easier to clean. I live in Australia and one small aquablox costs over $50-, the snorkel and centipede around $2000- So I wanted to create something much cheaper and see how effective it would be. Before they had aquablox they just used large rock and gravel so I thought what the heck. I slightly sloped the ground above the large corrugated pipe to help water and muck drain into that spot. I think it’s going to work brilliantly for a fraction of the cost but only time will tell.

The bacteria will start growing immediately, however it will take many months, even a year before the pond finds a good balance.

i´m building a 9000Liter pond and was if the 10% rule is right i need a 900Liter Bog container!? seems a bit big to me, im no expert but i was wondering if i could go a it smaller because i will cover the whole bottem of the pond with a mix of small and big rocks. who has expirience and knows?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 3 года назад
If you want a bog filter I’d stick with 10% minimum but it’s not the only way to filter a pond. If you built or purchased a waterfall filter you can move huge volumes of water through and purify the water that way.

Thanks for the great videos… I added a bog to my pond a little over a month ago. I’m curious how long it takes to start seeing clean water results? It seems to be slowly clearing things up, but the water is still pretty murky. Is there a need to flush out the bog early on to get that initial algae out of the pond, or is it better to just leave it alone for the bacteria to properly colonize? Thanks!
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 года назад
If only clean it now if the pump is on the bottom of the pond and you are sucking up lots of “stuff”. Otherwise just let it do it’s thing. If it was green pea soup water that you were trying to clear up I would expect it to be clear a month later. If it’s string algae that’s a different beast altogether.
@terraformpermaculture2700
@terraformpermaculture2700 2 года назад
@@Ozponds thanks for the quick reply! It is mainly the clarity of the water I’m trying to work on. The string algae doesn’t bother me too much. I just want to see the fish. But, I’m thinking it may be about to turn a corner with the bog.

Hi Kev. Thanks for another great video. I just finished my bog filter a week ago and it seems to be working fine. My only issue is the bottom pond water level seems to drop about an inch with the pump on. The pond isn't huge however the bog filter is almost as large as the main pond so I probably went overboard frankly. With the pump off everything appears to balance and water level comes back up allowing for some loss with evaporation etc so doesn't appear to be a leak as such. The pump is probably way oversized for the job. I tried reducing the pump flow and have a single jet driving water towards the intake however I prefer to run pump at max if I can. Main pond is around 1300 ltrs and bog holds around 800 using lv evo ii 4910 pump at minimal head so roughly 4000 ltrs / hr. Any general ideas to look out for? Thanks so much. Regards Andy.
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 3 года назад
G’day Andy. Sounds like it’s simply the amount of water in motion. That is the water within the pipes and moving over the surface of the bog. When you turn the pump off there is no water in motion. Hope that makes sense. A smaller pump would produce less water in motion.
@andysimons1786

So your bog filter placement is like a giant overflow sector?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 3 года назад
G’day Steve. No that’s more of an intake back or reservoir that you are describing. The bog sits above the pond not below. So water overflows from the bog into the pond not vice versa.
