A few things that would be great video topics! -If a person is wearing invisalign consistently, when can one switch from a 2 week tray schedule to a 10 or 7 day schedule? -How to prevent receding gums? -Benefits of a waterpik and how to safely use it. -Benefits of Propel / oral massager that speeds invisalign -Dental nutrition (vitamins and minerals such as D, K2, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium) to support teeth, gums, and bone. -Tongue cleaning -Remineralizing teeth -Promoting healthy mouth bacteria (many studies show a link between oral health and overall health that we don't fully understand - it seems that oral health can cause good/bad overall health, not just the other way around.)
I just got the spacer that is yesterday. Its damn irritating.I have space problem in my teeth coz of it i have spacer. Can you or anyone give some tip of pain management of spacer please!!!!
I got braces a year ago and when they get put them on they don’t really hurt. It’s *Always* the next day☠️ Make sure to floss and brush thoroughly food gets stuck in between the lil rubber bands and will actually rot! Also, when you get them tightened, be sure to take some pain killers/Tylenol a few hours before you get them tightened and the day after because your teeth are going to hurt because like he said, they’re moving and when you bite down it’s going to be quite uncomfortable! Sorry for making this so long but I just wanted to help some people who are kind of worried or nervous about getting braces ✌️😪
My 4 teeth were pulled out last year. My dentist was too stupid she broke one of the tooth and its root stayed inside. It is still in my gum. If your dentist is good its not a big deal but i was unlucky i guess
it doesn’t hurt i just got two of mine pulled today it just feels like a little tug but the numbness was the most annoying part for me because i wanted to eat regular foods and yes i know im late😅
For me, my braces didn't hurt at all. They only hurt when I ate something and they did that for a whole month. The only thing that hurts now are my elastics
@@DrGregAsatrian The elastics only hurt for the first day, they don't hurt anymore since I wear them all the time. I don't know, why I wrote "now" instead of "when I got them" 😂😂😂
When I got my braces on, it literally hurt so bad for a week straight but for wire changes and things like that, it doesn’t hurt as bad, it’s bearable. Never had to use my wax and I’m done with year one of my two years, honestly love my braces!
Yes! Braces hurt they hurt a lot for me the day after I got them then the pain got better. After that, they really only hurt when I get them tightened. My orthodontist put power chains on my front top teeth to close my gap and that hurt so much but it was very effective. Braces can hurt a lot but the pain in my opinion is worth it!
idk why I'm watching this since I'm getting my braces off in a few days 😂 thanks for making these videos, they've really helped me through my braces journey 👍
My teeth hurt so bad after I got my upper braces on. I wanted to rip them off. I always have discomfort after my tightening and cheek sores. I love wax!!!!! I don't care for pain meds.
I got my braces 6 days ago. It doesn’t hurt that much but it’s only painful when you eat. Just eat soft food. Day 6 it doesn’t hurt as much anymore but it still feel a lil painful when I chew something a lil hard. The gap are already closing at day 6 😂
these videos are so great for people who are starting out. when I first started my treatment I didn't know any of this and I didn't even know wax existed thanks to my first orthodontist who provided me with zero information. great videos ! 👏🏻
I just celebrated a year with braces yesterday. For me personally, they made my mouth sore when I first got them put on and sometimes when I get them tightened. I had people tell me that wearing elastics would hurt but honestly, it's not even that bad. I've had worse pain than dealing with my braces
I remember everyone telling me I was going to be in so much pain because they experienced that . My advice is just don’t think about it . I didn’t feel any pain what so ever even after getting them tightened . It all depends on your tolerance for pain .
my braces hurt like the first week, but the pain got better!! the hurting is a good sign tho because your teeth are getting better and better. for whoever is getting braces, you will be OK. you will get used to them quickly.
I'm almost done my treatment, should be getting my braces off in the next few months. My worst pain was when I got them on. I have a high pain tolerance and I never liked wax, so I just let my gums get cut up. My teeth were sore for about a week and it sucked to only eat soft food. Some tightenings would hurt for a few days, some wouldn't. Definitely not as bad as getting them on initially. Besides my teeth hurting, the tongue retractor that they used when applying braces really hurt my tongue, so my orthodontist knows not to use it unless they have to
Once thing I noticed is there’s a difference between the actual pain and discomfort that comes with it. When I left the dentist it just felt weird but later that night I was losing my mind😂 The pain went away in like 2 or 3 days and each day I adjusted a little more
My question is the reverse. I got braces recently and it hurt a bit the day after it was put on. I could only eat soft food (the first day after is the worst, but it really isn't that bad guys believe me). But after around 3 days, it stopped hurting. Now... I'm worried my braces aren't working because they don't hurt at all! Should I ask to get them tightened some more? Or do braces work even if they don't hurt/feel tight.
My parents: u may need braces Me: oh ok it wont hurt so much The comments: 'yeah so it really really really really really hurts' Me: oh thanks my anxiety just went up a bit 😁✋🏾
Yeah just don’t. I regret them so much. No more chewing for 2 weeks after you get them. Getting them tightened every week with the same pain processes, and people say you get used to it, but I’m still not and I’ve had mine for a year. I rather keep my gap then having braces Rn, I got mines tightened 4 days ago and it still hurt’s!!! But the good news is that once it stops hurting you will be able to eat literally anything. Btw, braces is not a necessity, meaning you don’t have to get them if you don’t want to. The dentist isn’t gonna force you to get them. To top all of that off..... don’t get braces.
I started watching since your spacers video which was around the time I got my braces and now I finally got them off after two years! I will continue watching your videos since they are very informative :) keep making these awesome videos
*stop binge-watching these videos to know if braces hurt* Yes, for some people they really hurt, but if you have a high pain tolerance then you should be fine. For most people, they hurt for 2-3 days or so. Also, stop worrying, it's really not that bad but even if it is for you, you gotta know that beauty is pain, so bear through it. It'll be worth it, trust me.
I am getting my braces in about four months and I am excited but nervous and this is my first time watching your channel and I already love it ❤ and I am 8 years old
lol 1 Ooo best of luck! For the first fitting they feel uncomfortable not really painful just the fact that a foreign object is in your mouth you know? Then after wearing them all night your jaw might be a bit sore, it’s completely normal to feel like your teeth are shifting, that’s a good sign! You’ll adjust to them very quick don’t worry best of luck 💓💓
lol 1 my first day was painless. however 2nd and 3rd was the worst. I could onlu eat soft foods for the first 5 days. After a week I could eat normal stuff again :)
I’ve been wanting a straighter prettier smile for sometime now and I’m finally getting mine in 2 weeks. I’m terrified because now I’m seeing all the horror stories on how bad they hurt. 😩
@@xalexiax the initial day I had them put on I was totally fine. The procedure didn’t hurt. The first few hrs they didn’t hurt. My mouth just felt really tight and they were really weird. I tried to eat with them and couldn’t. I wasn’t used to chewing with “extra things” in the way… By the evening I started feeling discomfort but nothing really unbearable. Day 2 still nothing unbearable. By the end of day 2 when I got off of work the pain started hitting me. I was almost in tears and almost regretting my decision going through treatment. But after taking some Tylenol I felt ok. The rest of the first week and a little into the 2nd week it was about the same. The pain was so terrible especially if I wasnt topping off on pain meds. I only recently started feeling like myself again. No pain really. But my mouth is so cut up from the friction they give. I’m able to eat normal to most extent. My teeth now feel so lose and they crack and pop which is pretty weird. Now I’m dreading my first tightening as I’m going to go through it all over again. Hopefully it’s not as bad. I’m told it’s not… and it’s just after the first couple weeks of getting them on -the worst part is over. We will see.
@@xalexiax The first couple weeks my discomfort varied. It was both a dull and sharp bee sting like pain all within in the gum line. It depended on what I was doing. If I was actively eating and trying to chew the pain was a sharp like pain. Same with brushing and flossing my teeth and they also bled like crazy. Don’t panic though -it’s normal since everything is loosening in order to be able to move. If I wasn’t actively doing anything with my teeth they just ached like a dull throbbing ache. Anything ice cold was a lifesaver. Lots of smoothies and ice cream. This may sound silly but teething rings and ice cold washcloths like what you’d give to babies helped me too. I still use them and everything as needed though it’s more bearable now. Cold will temporarily relieve that pressure from the wires. Those braces wires are heat activated into forming that desirable arch. I think now the reason it no longer hurts or feels tight for me much anymore is because my teeth have done moved into that arch and the wire now is just holding them in that specific spot till the next wire/adjustment… If any of this makes sense. I hope I could help. I’ve come to realize getting orthodontic treatment is a huge step in life that’ll be worth it in the end. ❤️
I’m so exited bc I’m getting my braces in two daysss! Btw I gotta overjet and a gap😭✌🏽🙃🥺Edit:got my braces !!!! Just a lil pain on my bottom teeth!! Thx for all da tipszzz.
I’m getting braces in 2 weeks and I’m very nervous because people say it hurts when they keep your mouth open for so long and I’m really nervous about that😓. I have been watching a lot of your videos and it really helps! Thanks for making me less nervous!
When I first got braces, I had lots of dental irritation on my incisors and canines. I just cut my food into really small pieces I didn't have to bite off for the first few week or so. It started a few hours after getting the braces on, peaked two or three days in, and was gone in five or six days. I'll have to deal with something similar again, though, because I don't have bottom row braces yet.
As a band teacher I had pieces of the Morgan Bumper designed by an orthodontist that I could give brass players. They have a website. It covers the bracket like a U. It was good for kids that had just gotten their braces and had not yet developed callouses. It comes in lots of colors. I was introduced to it at a music convention and it works so much better than wax.

First off, thank you for creating these informative videos! I recently got my braces a few days ago, and right now I'm feeling the dental discomfort. I have a lot of soreness in my teeth and I am unable to chew or bite food without feeling discomfort. Hopefully, the soreness will go away soon. I'm very excited that I got my braces since I have some moderate crowding issues.
I remember that when i had to wear rubber bands my teeth were hurting everyday :/ I’ve had braces for over a year and the pain is not as bad anymore but i used to have pain for almost 3 weeks, now it’s only a week max. I had to get my braces off once for an mri and i remember that my teeth hurt after lol just from not having pressure from the braces,
Yes, they hurt. I was so fortunate to get an expander with my braces (that is fenomanal pain) BUT I found this certain advil in a Ovall shape with a long white container makes it not hurt at all!
My appointment did hurt when the technician was putting in the wires. There was so much pressure, it felt like she was going to push my tooth out. Maybe it’s just me, though. Yes, having braces on hurts, but pain meds are usually kinda helpful. For me, it’s more annoying that I have a bunch of metal in my mouth constantly touching my cheeks/lips. And that I can only eat soft foods (I just got my braces on two days ago)
My cheeks are already cut up from my back teeth pointing out too much causing me to bite myself every time I chew, that’s why I’m getting braces this month.
Question: is it normal for one side of the mouth to feel pain and not the other side after adjustments??? My left side hurts and I see more progress but my right side feels great🤔 but not really progressing 🙄😅
it’s honestly just because your teeth are more crooked on the side that hurts more and the other side may not be as bad I think that’s why🤷🏻♀️ hope I helped
I’ve had my braces on for a little over 5 and a half months and still only have my top set on. I’m getting my bottoms on in September, but why would an orthodontist put the top and bottoms on at different times? Love your videos Dr Greg!
My orthodontist told me he does the top teeth first because sometimes when he does both at the same time the top teeth knock off the bottom brackets. So basically he adjusts the top teeth so they don't clash with the bottom brackets. He said he would remove them at the same time for me. But of course your orthodontist may have a different reason 🤷♀️
Monserat Nunez Same, my ortho said they come off at the same time, just put one on first to track the process separately. I’m pretty sure the bottom moves faster than the top too 🤔
Ibracket repositions and wire details made my teeth tender. Bruising is a good description. The first time they did an adjustment hurt when they pulled the elastic ties.
just got braces this month for the first time. honestly, they don't hurt; just the annoying poking of my cheeks on the interior buccal side nearest the top left-side 3rd molar. I think they may have used the .012-014 wires. My teeth are not crowded; they are spaces out. So I anticipate that they may change the wire length or grade in order to exert added force for step by step movement. I do anticipate that, after my next appointment, my teeth may be more sore than the initial appointment.
honestly a lot of people and dentists try to be so professional about it by describing "tightness or discomfort" but for me it really hurt, but after my first two check-in appointments i started to feel like i could manage it
Not sure if the community would be interested, but maybe you could consider explaining hypoplasia and how to brush better if you have severe hypoplasia (like me!)
Elastics hurt so bad! Also the coils hurt, but looking at the changes is amazing. I have a love hate relationship regarding my appointments for those reasons.
As someone who got braces today, I’m going to be honest. It hurts. A lot. The whole process of getting prepped and getting them on is uncomfortable, but not painful. Your mouth will become VERY dry because you won’t be able to swallow for an hour or two. Mine took 3 hours. After a few hours it will start aching and rubbing against your tongue and lips. It isn’t terrible, but it isn’t exactly nice. I got a lingual holding arch, which is basically a bar that goes behind all my teeth, in a U shape. It has given me a very bad lisp, mostly with s, x, d, t, ect, but I hope I get used to it soon. So that’s been my first day, hope it gets better soon!
I had braces as child and adult. Actually it can hurt sometimes when new or activated new. But this hurt is not a real problem and for me acceptable. A serious problem for me is, that I got wrong extraction as child. Would like to have orthodontics without any extractions. Also by the cost of longer apparative treatments. And a further serious problem is generation of recessions as result of braces. Actually it is known, that conservative treatments with more and longer brace activity can increase the risk of getting recessions. If I had got correct extractions (4*4) as child, I probably had no later recession problem. But I have a mouth-breathing problem and I think conservative treatment could have do a good thing for better nose-breathing.
@@apollo5458 ; In my channel is an Video "SchlossFuenfeck2019Neu", which is more an architectural explanation for a schooling building. Inside this video my teeth problem is scattered in. You can see drawings to my case. Actually the wrong extraction is irreparable. All orthodontics after severy wrong treatments in dentistry cannot "fix" the problem back to an optimal result. It can only increase in result quality. If I had enough money, I would make a third treatment, which would result in little increase of occlussion quality and should end with a pinhole recession treatment. This new pinhole treatment does not yet include bone recreation by stuffing with bone material in the roots-near low regions. It is all in the beginnings and to expensive for me. A treatment would cost up to 20.000 Euro/dollars for some small fine tunings of an irreparable case. But there are cases more serious in damage than mine case. Moreover I am fairly old. Doing a lot of dentistry for a few live years over ? It would be interesting for dokumentation purposes of treating an senior with an activator to optimize occlussion position. Nice for demonstrations, but to expensive for my now !
Honestly people over exaggerate the pain. You don't feel any pain during the process of braces being put on and you don't feel any pain after they are put on. You only feel pain when you bite foods or aggravate them. But because you aren't eating every second of every day, 95% of the time you don't feel pain only a little tightness or numbness on the teeth. For the first couple of hours after your braces are put on, you won't feel this numbness and could still eat hard foods BUT I DON'T RECOMMEND IT because it will make the teeth more sensitive later to lighter aggravation. The next day you will feel the numbness a lot more but it isn't pain, just a little annoying. The next 4-5 days you wont be able to bite down on foods, even biting down on noodles and rice will be hard. Around day 5/6/7 depending on how you are feeling you can start biting down on soft foods like noodles and rice. For me it wasn't until day maybe 12 that I could properly eat my foods like before braces. In Australia we have something called UP & GO, I highly recommend having this because you will feel full throughout the day because of it. For those of you who don't know what it is, it's a type of milkshake/porridge type of thing that comes in flavors like chocolate, banana, strawberry, etc.
Hello Doc Greg! New subscriber here from PH. I just got my braces last Friday and I really can't eat/chew properly. So what I did was I use my tongue instead and let the food dissolve inside my mouth😅😅😅. Actually I was more conscious now about my teeth regarding oral hygiene. Thank you so much for posting and sharing your videos with us. It's very informative and I am learning a lot. Hope to meet you in person. Hehe
I love watching your videos!!!! I’m getting braces pretty soon so I’ve been watching these to get prepared!!!! Thanks for the tips!!! Your making me so excited to get my braces on!
Can you make a video about memory wire width as the treatment progresses? Why and which thickness and when should be put on, what's the max-wire-width, etc...?
Actually on the contrary especially if you have sensitive teeth like me, getting them installed hurts a lot. The water that comes out the appliance they use is cold and the air that's being consistently blown over the teeth to keep them dry is excruciating. Plus if you have a crown(s) it's likely they'll put a spacer in between it and the tooth next to it, which causes it to bleed and it's painful. The point of that is to create a gap so that at your next adjustment they can finish the procedure. I had to wait a few days with the spacer by my crown and the pain got worse and worse and started triggering my migraines. This has been only my first week in the braces and so far the pain has been 7/10.
Hey Doc, Can you please make a video about getting braces with a missing front tooth. My story is when I was in elementary school I had an accident which broke one of my front tooth's in half. My parents took me to a terrible local dentist, and due to me and my parents ignorance, the dentist decides to shave the half tooth down and put a fake tooth with a rod in the hole of the half tooth. After a while it came off multiple times, which led to my parents taking me to a better dentist which told us, since the other dentist messed up and shaved the tooth down, the best thing they can do is remove the whole tooth with the root and give me a temporary denture (which I disliked and never wore) and in the future when I'm much older I can get a implant. After a while I started to realized the gap of the missing tooth was naturally closing and my denture could not fit in anymore, which made me wonder how would I be able to get a implant if my teeth aren't in the correct position and thought braces could help. I am 18 right now and want to know what I should do.
i’m watching all your video so i’m educated! thank you so much for making videos they are so helpful!! i feel more comfortable going into getting braces because i know more about them! 😁😁😁
