Thanks for all these videos, man! I bought my first diesel truck recently which is 2001 7.3 powerstroke, and I'm learning about it as much as I can. These videos are a big help to me. The effect of the cold air intake will be even more dramatic when towing and the engine is working hard and putting a lot more heat under the hood. It will also help keep the EGTs lower, which is always good.

I went with the Banks Cold Air Intake and everything else was pretty much stock. It made a noticeable difference in my 7.3 but I wondered what the temps were. Thank you for all the videos!

What kind of noticeable difference did it make? The only value I can see in it is if it saved you enough gas (the proof it was actually effecting something positively) or ran cooler when towing, decreasing wear and tear on the engine. Thanks!

@@Bwanar1 my boost pressure went from 12 to 16psi and you could feel a noticeable difference in acceleration. around 20 degrees. not a big deal on intercooled 7.3s, but obs 7.3s the intake air temperature makes a good bit of difference because there is no intercooler. this will help egts stay down a lot. i have an afe cold air intake on my 97 7.3. while driving 75 to 80 at about 90 degrees outside my egts sit at 1000. when it gets colder at night to about 70 degrees or so my egts drops to about 800 around 75 to 80 mph. This plays a huge part in Fuel mileage as colder air is denser leading to a more efficient burning of diesel fuel. Great video you put together on the before and after. ive ran them both and both ran well. i think the only trucks you'll see a difference in mileage and egts will be the older 7.3s with no intercooler. Never the less, great video!

I went with the S&B After having the 6637 for years. The problem I started having was that I couldn't get the hose clamp to keep the 6637 on the pipe any longer for some reason. It seemed like the tighter I tightened it, The more it wanted to just pop off. I didn't like that. So in the meantime I used drainage pipe tape ( Like large extra wide electrical tape) to ensure a good seal. But obviously that was a very hooptie set up. That is why I had to go with the S&B. I did not want to risk getting dirty air sucked into my engine. I think the results are worth it also.

I ran into the same issue with the last 6637 I installed. It seems that the rubber flange isn’t flat enough to keep the hose clamp on. No doubt S&B makes a good product though!

I'm interested whether or not there is any tangible benefit from installing a cold air intake versus using just an open 6637. The benefits of the 6637 over the factory cold air intake on my early 99 is very obvious. The test that you did is flawed because you should have been looking at ambient air temp, post intercooler air temp, EGT's and performed under a load. These trucks were not designed as daily drivers, they are working trucks and are engineered to pull heavy loads in adverse conditions. I use my truck hauling freight which means I pull a trailer weighing up to 16,000 lbs. There's a big difference when you're pulling heavy with high boost for long periods of time. Now for the other half of the story...I am subject to DOT inspections at any weigh station as well as along the road. When the inspector tells me that he cannot check my power steering level because the cold air intake is in the way, I will be forced to disassemble the intake or potentially be placed out of service. And checking the power steering fluid is part of the pre and post trip inspections that have to be done daily. On my 6637 setup, I added a hole to the 4" tube post filter to measure the temp entering the turbo...really simple. Yes, it reads about 20 degrees higher than the factory temp but the benefits of the extra air combined with the 4" turbo back exhaust resulted in far lower EGT's and 1 - 1.5 MPG gain over stock while hauling loads. Lowering the EGT's means I don't have to lift off the throttle while climbing long grades under a load.

I have a 2000 F350 with the s&b filter. Although it does place the stupid dirty filter check bulb thingy (super technical term) I can still get my power steering dipstick out with a little wiggling.

It’s important to remember the truck isn’t warmed up just because your IAT ICT are up to nominal temps. Your oil temp is what matters especially on a turbocharged motor. I plan to get a exhaust temp / oil temp / manifold pressure (for boost ) . So many issues can be diagnosed (and avoided ) by knowing these values in real time.

Thanks for posting this video and the data you shared. I am curious if anyone can say that EGT's came down a measurable amount by going from a 6637 to this CAI. It would make sense that if the intake air is much cooler than the underhood air temperature the intake air is starting at a cooler base point allowing for even more dense air to hit the cylinders providing better and cleaner combustion thus resulting in lower EGT's but that's theory.. really interested to see real world difference?

@codynixdorf1507

I'm going to ask an open question...What does the "cold air intake" really do for the truck with it having an intercooler? If you look, at 70MPH the EGTs are the same 580..Isn't that the point of argument when people who say one way works better than the other? I'm just trying to figure the justification of buying a $300 intake compared to the $60 6637 setup, sure the IAT is much cooler but other than that, what's the difference?
@LivingOnWheels
@LivingOnWheels 4 года назад
I think they main argument for "cold air intakes" is not to lower EGTS but it is to get cooler air going into the engine. The cooler the air, the more air you can compress into each compression cycle, the more air in each compression cycle the more effective and powerful combustion you get. Cooler air leads to more efficiency and more power for the same amount of fuel. Same reason drag racers put ice packs on their super chargers. Its all in attempts to lower the intake air temps to gain as much power as possible. Can I say this setup is worth the $300. Not with personal dyno results I can't but I can say that it serves its purpose well of providing cooler air to the engine.
@codynixdorf1507
@codynixdorf1507 4 года назад
Living On Wheels the air goes into the intake manifold after it’s been through the intercooler though. I think the only real way to see if it really makes a difference is to put a temp probe post intercooler and take temps from there. I could be wrong though, just how I think of it logically.
@LivingOnWheels
@LivingOnWheels 4 года назад
Cody Nixdorf I totally get where you’re coming from and don’t necessarily think you’re wrong. I guess the way I see it is the intercooler will only cool the air down so much. So if you can provide cooler air going in then I would expect cooler air to come out. Obviously I can’t say that for sure though.

Unfortunately since my truck did not come with remote locks it makes the install a bit more tricky. Not sure what my plans are for that yet. While it's nice to see the CAI provides slightly cooler air, in the real world I doubt there is a notable beneficial difference. I run the 6637 because it supplies enough air flow for my larger injectors and turbo. While this kit would also supply enough air, I'm not convinced it's a worthwhile purchase. The only reason I would want one is I frequently wash my engine bay with my pressure washer. Having the filter enclosed would be beneficial but not necessary either. I also do not exactly like the fact that it nearly blocks off access to the power steering reservoir. Otherwise a great looking kit that is possibly reasonably priced for todays messed up world

@@LivingOnWheels Geee. Engine compartment air is warmer than outside air. What is so hard to understand. it is fifth grade knowledge. So warmer air is thinner and worst for combustion. Also with warmer air intake, the computer will retard the spark timing to avoid detonation. Im a mechanic for decades in Philly. Colder Air must come from outside the engine area, never from inside.

Let me get this straight. You have your panties in a bunch because I made a video testing and numerically showing how big of a difference a CAI drops intake temps vs pulling air from under the hood? I'm literally proving and showing the exact thing you're trying to say. Also, being a mechanic for decades, you should probably know that this truck doesn't have spark timing... Now it could possibly adjust the injection timing but I do not believe it even does that on these trucks. Its main purpose is for the PCM to know whether or not it's cold enough to actuate the exhaust back pressure valve or not on warmups.

L.O.W. Installed my S&B a couple of weeks ago and appreciate going back to cooler outside air again but. With the S&B and the kc turbo installed I have a noise that I wonder if u r getting? This may be normal but was enhanced with the S&B. Between shifts (automatic) at a medium pull I get a heck of an air rush noise, if I keep my foot steady I can keep the noise fairly constant but I can let off or step into it and it will go away. I don't believe it to be boost leak, I have ck it over several times plus it will go away with more throttle. I think going from the open riffraff filter mod to an enclosed plastic housing is what enhanced this. Also is a boost fouler necessary?
@LivingOnWheels
@LivingOnWheels 4 года назад
Hmmm. Its hard to say without hearing it myself. I can say that when I installed my S&B I could definitely hear my turbo more than with my 6637. To me it kind of sounds like you're just hearing how much air the truck is actually sucking in. Under light throttle its not enough to really hear and under heavy throttle everything else is so loud that you cant hear it. That would be my best guess without hearing it myself. As for the boost fooler I would say if you are under 25 psi it is not necessary. If you are over 25 psi you can either run the fooler or have your tuner tune it out.

Your turbo will only suck so much air. Bigger turbo, more air needed, bigger filter needed. Unless your filter is plugged up because you don't take care of it. It will flow plenty of air. It would be expensive to put a truck on the Dyno and get real world data as far as air quantities vs quality vs warm\cold, and difference between a 10° temp drop. I'll stick to the easy\peasy and just suck colder air thru a free flowing air filter that is taken care of.

I use the S&B intake but your test numbers are flawed because your original setup didn't have the probe in the tube which means it didn't get any air pulled over it to cool it off like the S&B. You should have drilled a hole in the K&N tune and shoved the probe in it. Could have temporarily sealed it with some permatex for the test.

1st the video was cool, the install more complex due to the aftermarket wiring he’s installed which should’ve been properly protected in some type of loom and routed better. That said, him not having the ambient temp sensor mounted away from engine heat is also a issue that makes before and after temps all but inconclusive. These before install temps aren’t measuring intake air temp before the cold air intake install, he was measuring under hood temp due to his temp sensor not actually being installed in the intake pipe. So, ALL of his before install temp numbers are void because they’re not intake temp they’re under hood temp. His actual words were “it measures the temp kind of around the filter” meaning it’s likely just sitting near the filter on top of the inner fender. ANY comparison of intake temp to this is not accurate. Also the best place for ambient air temp is behind the front bumper, him having it behind the headlight is basically still measuring under hood temp yet again. These cold air intakes typically show 10 - 15 degrees cooler than factory intake air temps depending on your area and obviously having the ambient air temp sensor in the coolest area away from engine heat and if your intake air temp is actually being taken from the intake system instead of sitting on the top of the inner fender. His before install was measuring under hood temps in two different places instead of actual ambient air temp and actual intake air temp. His idea was good but, the longer you watch the video he complicates the install by not having aftermarket wiring properly routed and ambient temp as well as intake temp both being monitored incorrectly making this video not a true before & after result of the cold air intake.

The sensor is pre filter on the S&B. So where should I have put the sensor pre filter for the 6637 open element filter? The 6637 is sucking under hood air. The the point of the entire test. Is it worth getting a cold air intake over running an open element filter such as the S&B.
@80sfordguy
@80sfordguy 3 года назад
Living On Wheels I went back and edited my comment to explain better. Since you asked, your best intake air temp measurement would’ve been to drill a hole and use a grommet in the metal intake pipe you used to mount your air filter then the before install part would’ve been closer to being accurate but, because your factory filter housing isn’t being used your numbers would’ve still been hotter than normal. Your ambient air temp sensor should not be behind the headlight but, in behind the front bumper or like in some other applications under the truck away from ANY heat source perhaps under the cab between the rocker and the frame. Your video was good but, it yielded inconclusive results due to the intake air temp and ambient air temp sensors both basically measuring two different areas of under hood temps.
@LivingOnWheels
@LivingOnWheels 3 года назад
I get what you are saying. You are considering intake air temps of the air that is physically inside the intake tube past the filter. I am considering intake air temps as the temperature of the the air getting sucked into the filter. The before test the sensor is sitting up against the bottom side of the air filter. So, the test are both reading air temps just before the intake. The way you are explaining it is not wrong by any means but simply a different test. The ambient air temp sensor I had ran down to behind the headlight picked up temps behind the front bumper. Yes, it would have been better to route it as far from the engine as I could, but without cutting and extending the harness on it, that was as far away as it could get. While driving the sensor did in fact read accurately and showed the same temps as what local thermometers showed. Obviously while parked the radiant heat got to it. Like I mentioned in the video. In terms of the wiring, I'm not gonna deny that at the time the wiring needed to be cleaned up more. Like I said in the video, I opted to keep all the sensor wires at full length to allow for flexibility down the road. Its a lot of fun cutting wires down to a perfect length only to find out down the road you need to move them to a new location and now they are too short. It all a work in progress.
@80sfordguy
@80sfordguy 3 года назад
Living On Wheels gotcha, yes it’s all a working process. Though I still think I didn’t convey the intake air temp correctly, you replied “the intake air sensor was sitting under the air filter right against it” that is still measuring under hood temp going into the filter. The factory filter housing similar to the S&B housing both measure the intake air in the housing and not in the intake pipe. The actual difference from a stock housing to the S&B housing would be the extra air flow from the S&B housing while the engine is running at idle and driving. The increased air flow helps the engine along with getting air from the grill area makes the difference in air temp, due to the side inlet being the same in both housings. Therefore, your comparison would be inconclusive in any situation without having the factory housing for the before install temps measured. Measuring the intake air with a open filter (no housing) either next to the filter or in the intake pipe would be the difference vortex flow temp in the pipe versus (next to the outside of the filter) or under hood temp. True intake temp measuring would only be accurate in the intake manifold which would be after the charge air cooler and turbo compressor which would properly show how a “cold air intake” assists the “Charge Air Cooler” in cooling intake temps to the engine. I’ve seen many truck like yours claiming to be measuring intake air temp, not wrong but not right either and cold air intakes only drop intake manifold temp 10 - 15 degrees at best. I enjoyed your video in any case as well as this discussion, please keep the videos coming. Guys that are just getting into this type of work or performance upgrades need to see actual comparisons no matter the info achieved by any comparison. It’s about getting out there and doing your own work rather than paying some over priced performance shop to have it done. Keep up the videos man!!!

@@80sfordguy I agree that it would have been an all around better test to use the factory intake as well. Unfortunately I no longer had that. The reason I chose to still do this test was because the 663 filter is probably the most commonly used aftermarket filter setup on these trucks and so I wanted people to be able to see the difference mad between that setup vs the S&B. I am sure there would be less of a difference if compared to the stock intake.
