One of my besties is Afro-Dominican and her abuela told me she was proud of me for wearing my natural hair she said she wishes she wore hers but couldn't. At first I was like "girl just rock it" but I see now that it simply wasn't possible. My friend went natural after me and we love our hair. This is really eye opening and I wish for everyone to be in a state that celebrates them for who they are.
It’s a shame. Natural hair is so beautiful! And I love Amara La Negra for embracing hers! Makes me mad that people would mock her but I’m not surprised. 😔
Amara has come such a long way I’m so proud of her. Im not gonna lie I’m a little shocked because when you see racism or anti blackness from Dominicans it’s never out in the open and to blatantly do it on live television is beyond me, like who approved it and didn’t think it was an issue.
@@TheCurlPapi Right?! It's so aggravating how common and widespread anti-Blackness is in Latin America. I think a lot of non-Black Latinos think they're better than Afrolatinos but they forget that they're not white either, so where's the unity?!
I never knew about Rafael Trujillo - DR has such a dark history. Now the anti-black sentiment makes complete sense. It honestly hurts when I read/watch stuff like this, black people have truly been through so much and it hurts that we’re only treated this way because of our skin tone and hair, attributes that are beyond our control and are literally just features. That being said, hopefully the younger generation can finally embrace their natural beauty and undo all the indoctrination that has been passed down from the older generation.
To be completely honest there’s people in the younger that are just as bad or worse, makes me sick. But one day I pray we can all just be people, no hate, no discrimination just people
@@TheCurlPapi I have said forever that Haitians and Dominicans are family. It’s beyond weird that culturally speaking, Haitians are "black” and Dominicans are “white.” These are social/political constructs on both sides because the truth is there are blacks, whites, Spanish, Taino, Jews, Germans, Scandinavian , British, French, Polish, Lebanese (you name it on both sides). And frankly, there are too many families in both sides related to each other for centuries, and a common historical foundation. Sure we have differences, but we have more that’s the same. God bless Haiti and DR : one family!❤
That is so sad, dictating on the lives that should live based on skin tone!! But I am happy to see those barriers are slowly but surely being broken. Awesome video, C.!! 😄😄
This is a good video. I knew a bit of the history of DR (my parents are from Haiti and reading about it ). The idea of having straight is like a rite of passage. I don't live in Haiti but there is a new wave of natural salons now. Mentalities are slowly changing like in the black communities in the US and around the world. This was an excellent video.
The history is crazy and you still see the effects years later the relationship between Haiti and DR sometimes make me sick because we share an island and should be working towards the betterment of our relationship with our neighbors. I’m glad you enjoyed the video 💖
You couldn't catch me without a fresh doobie. But my daughter said to me why I cant wear my hair straight like yours made me step back and show her we need to love ourselves. I started over 7 yrs ago and only strength it to trim it
Yaaaaaas to the doobie 🫶🏼. My niece is half Indian and is always telling me she wishes she had curly hair (she’s 4) which shows you love for your hair, especially curly comes from the home.
This is an amazing video! I'm Puerto Rican with alot of Dominican family members and I had no idea about the dictator history. I can also definitely relate to alot of what you spoke on. I think I was 10 when I got my first relaxer because my Mother (also a hairdresser) found it easier to deal with my hair that way.
Thank you🙏🏼. I’m half Dominican and half Puerto Rican and know a few Puerto Ricans that were also relaxed when young. My grand mother was alive during the Trujillo era and the stories she would tell were truly disturbing.
Thank you for making this video! It is super informative, while at the same time compassionate and empathetic. One of my students shared it with me and now I am sharing it with all of her classmates as an example of a well informed, engaging presentation on a cultural product (the concept of pelo malo), cultural practices (straightening natural curly hair), cultural perspectives (the belief that straight hair is superior to curly hair) and where those beliefs came from. Keep educating and loving on those curls!
Eres inteligente y bien documentado dominicano.
2:20 and Trujillo used makeup to appear 100% European. Very good video! It's also far easier for women to get an office job in the DR with straightened and bleached hair. Most Dominican beauty pageant contestants are still light skined ..
There's a channel on here with a Dominican hair stylist from New York. I found her video because I was looking on how to do a Dominican roller set at home. At the beginning of her video, she literally states that she hates curly hair.
Thanks for the historical breakdown regarding colorism and texturism in the DR. It certainly isn’t much different than what happened in the US. In one of your slides you mentioned that 70% of the people were of African or Spanish descendants and included Black and White. In this case, what ethnicity do you consider Black?
The information came from the Molecular Genetics & Genomic Medicine website, I’m sure the black they reference is of Haitian ethnicity considering they share the island but in general the site wasn’t specific on on the origins of the ethnicity. I’ll link the study if you’d like to check it out. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4867558/#mgg3224-sec-0003title
Love how is changing though! My daughter is 10 and has only straightened her hair 2x….I did get comments about her hair but didn’t give a damn….many friends and family have lost their curls due going to the salon on a weekly basis for yearsssss
Curl Papi, I am glad you talk about topics such as this. When I went to DR I wore my hair mostly curly. My cousin and I could not keep our hair straight (YES WE TRIED)💀 I want to say that my best pedicure EVER was in DR💗
Thank you I’m so happy you like the video and trust me they will keep coming💖. Listen god willing I will one day have my own line🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 it’s something for sure I want in my future
I have always thought natural Dominicans are some of the most beautiful ppl in the world. Question: Do men and young boys face the same hair issues as girls..As far as their natural texture.
Great video! I had no idea these issues existed in the DR. After years of relaxing, I’m finally embracing and learning to love my naturally coily, curly hair. I wish that others would do the same and this video will definitely help😊.
When talking about Trujillo, many people only focus on his Haitian genocide but seem to forget his obsession with "cleansing" the dominican ethnicity. He really dared to bring people running from Nazism and Francisco Franco's dictatorship, in order to erase Black/dark skinned dominicans. I can't imagine those immigrants thinking they'll be freed from tirany only to find themselves in Trujillo's hands. Wonderful mini-documentary! 🇩🇴
I don’t recall saying in the video that curly hair is a “black” thing. if I did do you mind time stamping it? This videos is the relationship people of the Dominican Republic have to their natural hair and how years of oppression made them hate their natural hair. If you received a different message I would encourage you to rewatch the video.
