2:55 what’s the most adorably tragic about this moment is that Sam isn’t hugging his brother because he himself is sad. He’s hugging Henry because he knows Henry and the doctor were friends 😢❤. Sam is so empathetic and mature even though he shouldn’t have to be as a little kid. I also believe this is why he’s facing the window in the morning when Ellie wakes up. He didn’t want to see her when he turned (since he knew he can’t hear anyway). He wanted her to be safe.

“Monsters don’t exist. We’re all just human and we have more in common than the things that we don’t.” I have tried talking to people about this but I’ve never been able to explain it in a way to make them understand it. Most people just react by being shocked by what I’m saying lol. Beautiful explanation.

Gonna get a little too real for a second, I think this idea is incredibly important when it comes to talking about things like the Holocaust. Most people's first reaction is that they would never be a perpetrator of something like that because those people were all monsters. But the truth is the majority of them were just normal people in a social/political situation that led them to do horrific things that they normally wouldn't. If we want to prevent large scale violence like genocide it's really important for us to acknowledge that any of us can commit horrific acts in the right circumstance.

This episode made me cry nearly as hard as episode 3 did. As someone who is hard-of-hearing, I appreciated the representation in this. Ellie is so desperate for her blood to work. And Sam and Henry's ending destroys me every time I see it.

Yeah, I thought I couldn't cry more than I did over 3, but this managed it.

I prefer the Seven Psychopaths version. "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind"... "But what about the last guy? He'd have one eye left."

The writers intended for us to care more about Henry and Sam than Kathleen, and intended for us to hate her by having her coldly say "kids die". I certainly wasn't sad that she died the way I was with Sam and Henry. However, I could understand where she was coming from. She loved her brother as much as Henry loved Sam. He was her protector when they were kids; same as Henry was for Sam. Of course she would care more for her brother than for someone else's. I could see why she would be angry. I would be if someone got my sister killed to protect someone else, even if it was a kid. I had a little sympathy for her, but a lot more for Henry and Sam.
@Jeetaruey

I think Kathleen is ableist. Sam is a deaf child and she doesn't see him as worth it verse her brother who was their leader. A lot of The Last of Us is about how we have lost our humanity and this city was not treating humans as humans. They are all turned against each other and killing people who they don't have use for.

I'm so curious to see your thoughts on the next two episodes because I think they deal so heavily with mental health, especially episode 6. excellent reaction, as always! and thanks for not including Sam and Henry's death scene in the reaction; I've seen it more than enough times at this point ❤

One thing I enjoy about being a lay person is that I can sling around words like sociopath or psychopath and most people know what that means and get the distinction. They describe actual, observable behavior. And we know enough to steer away as best we can and to disengage. Lay people are not beholden to the DSM 5. The precise taxonomy is immaterial; they know to disengage and flee quasi-instinctually. Threat. Danger. Retreat. Run away.

I wasn't sure they were going to keep this in the show the way it was in the game. Looks like they did, aside from the kid being deaf. Pretty sure it wasn't the case in the game. That's a good change, once again. They do seem to be adding depth, diversity, and subtleties, which is very much appreciated.

There was a case in the press recently of a palliative care team in a hospital I used to work in being overheard making some pretty inappropriate jokes. Was discussing this with former colleagues and someone brought up that was a lot of medical staff develop gallows humour as a coping mechanism for all the death and illness they see. It's really tricky because I fully understand why a patient or family member would be horrified by what was said but I imagine other staff they've interacted with will have made equally inappropriate jokes in private. Maybe putting more supports in place for staff so they can develop healthier coping mechanisms is the answer? I really don't know.

I need to find this show. I like what you said about the worst of humanity are not monsters but are human. It's sort of fascinating how far someone can act completely outside social norms but be your next door neighbor. When do the cracks start to show?
@DoctorElliottCarthy
@DoctorElliottCarthy Год назад
With the benefit of hindsight you can see health and social care difficulties that can often be traced back to before the person was born. The difficulty is with risk prediction i.e. foresight, not just 20:20 hindsight

@@DoctorElliottCarthy I keep thinking there but for the grace of God go I, which is scarier. We all have those predator/lizard brain instincts. Most bury them deep but some let them run free. I hope I stay the former.

Have you seen Eternal Beauty? It's a fairly recent indie film by Craig Roberts, starring Sally Hawkins. The main character is schizophrenic, and I thought it did a good job of presenting highs, lows, and everyday moments. The movie's got a strong slice-of-life/character study feel to it. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it.

It's weird that experts tend to say psychopathy isn't a thing anymore and then they proceed to define it. To say it's not relevant but keep using the term. Many recent papers keep using the term. It's very paradoxical.

i don't know the revenge thing kinda rubs me the wrong way. a lot of it is about safety of both self and others. justice can fit into what you said, arguably, though I still believe it also matters here. nor do I believe revenge ruins people. the pursuit of it, if it takes a while, may, but people getting justice they deserve helps healing. also I dont watch the show, but from what ive seen and the comments ive read, is that lady really bad? isn't her argument the argument of the whole show? kill one person to save another, kill one person to save a bunch more?

First off, I just want to say I love your reactions and the insights you bring with your professional background. Secondly, I don’t have any knowledge of Deaf culture as it pertains to the UK, so please forgive my ignorance, but the term “hearing impairment” definitely has a negative and offensive connotation in American Deaf culture. I understand you’re coming from a clinical perspective, but thought I’d just share. Anyways, love the content as always.
@DoctorElliottCarthy
@DoctorElliottCarthy Год назад
Oh really? Can you explain why as terms like hearing impairment and visual impairment are common in the UK but that doesn't mean they're right or appropriate
@sonofliberty1
@sonofliberty1 Год назад
As someone in the UK who has a bone-anchored hearing aid due to 90% hearing loss in one ear and progressive hearing loss in the other, I think 'hearing impaired' is an accurate and inclusive term that can encompass lots of different people in different situations.
@Beatty003
@Beatty003 Год назад
@@DoctorElliottCarthy that’s why I said I don’t have much knowledge of Deaf culture in the UK. In the US, hearing impairment means “less than” and just use the term Deaf or Hard of Hearing (HoH). Of course I’m coming from a cultural perspective as we know it today due to the accessibility options being available such as VRS, closed captioning as an option in movie theatres, texting, and high functioning Deaf people shown in main stream media (like Sam in The Last of Us). However, I will say that put into this fungal apocalyptic scenario, Sam’s case is unique in the fact that he had high language acquisition in both ASL and American English (written form). He was truly lucky to have Henry in his life.

The "victims become offenders" narrative is also not reflected in sexual offences? Most victims do not become sex offenders. It was also a harmful narrative to victims of child abuse.

The speech she gave to harry is absolutely logic and make sense. Having a sick brother doesn't give you the right to kill someone else brother. She is not being cold, of course we can understand harry point of view but sam's life doesnt matter more just because he is a child. If someone would have murdered my brother to save theirs no matter the age they are, I would have behave and said the same exact things and then fucking killed them with no regret. Of course harry brother didnt deserve to die but neither kathleen brother. And this come from someone that is very empathetic.

I figured I would have to grit my teeth through the zombie bits. Instead, I have found my favourite show that's aired in years.

Ok... If you don't want to do reactions, then don't do them, or title them reactions, if you're not going to react to the dramatic scenes. That's the entire point of reaction videos, and watching the episode is the entire point of this form of media, that doesn't make it 'voyeuristic'. Just watch the show privately, select the best medical/mental health scenes & talk about them on video. Simple way to avoid clickbait & being voyeuristic! 🤷‍♀️
