In today video we find out just how much exhaust tips change the sound! Every vehicles exhaust may be different but here is a side by side with and without tips on my truck!
I think the tips helps making it louder at idle cause it can actually resonate inside the tip. Vs when driving it’s pushing through the tip a lot faster and it won’t be echoing inside the tip as much
The results make sense to me. Like comparing the sound produced from a tuba to that of a trumpet; you can get the same about of "volume" out of both instruments, its just the Tuba is way deeper in tone. Also the sounds each individual can hear, depends upon their ability to hear certain pitches in general. Some people just can't hear higher pitches as well as others. Great video!
@@yung_lemon6314 Lmao how? Apparently you didn’t listen when he was placing and removing the different tips in the video you watched. He literally proved it in this video.
Hi, Great video. I have been doing exhaust mods for ever. One thing to tale into account is that it is not only the type of tip, but that you also gain more and better sound by shortening the exhaust tail pipe. That is why when you cut them off and leave it like that, it sounds louder and raspier. Good job!
From what Ive seen larger exit makes it deeper and usually a little quieter. I’ve tried a 3” then to a 5” tip for quieter in my 5.3. My buddy had a 3” tip and went to an 6” tip and it was super quiet but deep.
I had 2 1/2 inch pipe true dual straights to 5x12 tips and changed to 6x18 tips 2 days ago and it’s so much deeper and I love it best sound in my opinion (on a 5.7 liter Chevy)
I have 2.5 inlet to 4 outlet 18 inch on my 5.7 tbi with a glass pack and I’m going to upgrade to 6 inch outlet. The 4 inch sounds deep and amazing but just curious what the 6 will sound like. Plus the looks also will look pretty cool I think also.
Long tubes and "highflow" cats on Larry with the 6 inch tips would be cool to see. I was going to go get my y pipe cut out and run ture duals on my 2011 5.3 with 7" tips but now I may stick with my 5" tips I have both sizes the 5s are on it now and the 7s are in the shed
Best way to think about it dynamically, A Megaphone, horn style speakers or even the flute/trombone, an air horn or train horn. The larger the step up from the exhaust pipe to tip will make it louder because the sound is being defected outward (Boomtubes in NASCAR) and bouncing back onto itself and the larger diameter slowing down the soundwaves making sound deeper. smaller diamter would be faster hence a higher pitch noise. (a car widow slightly cracked on the highway) Obviously there's diminishing returns. But if a Diesel is a single 4" thats why they run 6-8" tips, trying to get a deeper tone. Or with mine a single 2.5" with a Y split dual tip at 3.5" There's also a point where it starts looking "cartoonish" and a 8" tip looks well, wrongly proportioned.
your truck is literally my dream build. I just purchased a 2021 Chevrolet 1500, and I'm slowly getting the products I want for it. Put on the spray on liner, and also got a toneau cover for it. next I want to get an exhaust and keep the white exterior extending. if you dont mind telling me where you got the white bumpers that would be amazing. thanks and happy new year.
The angle of the exhaust tips are definitely another factor. My 2001 F-150 5.4 has 3.5" diameter tips with rear exit. My brother at first put 5" tips with 45 degrees exit on his old truck, a 1998 F-150 5.4. It was noticeably louder than mine. He then had it changed to an axle dump with 6" tips, which made it even louder.
They are called "resonators" for a reason. The sounds resonates in the tip altering the sound. Larger the circumference of the tip the more the sound resonates, aka a deeper quieter note. That's why it sounds louder with no tip.
I think big tips richen the sound. I have true dual 40 series flowmasters on my OBS. I had 4 inch tips and I liked them. The sound wasn't deep enough. I upgraded to 5 inch tips and the tone got deeper and I fell in love all over again.
I had true duals with no cats no mufflers on a 14 Chevy 5.3. At first I had 3 inch tips. It’s much more raspy and maybe even louder. Then I went to 8 inch tips and it was just wayyyy more deep
Personally, I like the throaty sound with the tips on. I was looking for that deep thunder/bass sound on my F150 but had the chincy 3.5 flowmaster clamp on tips that came with the American Thunder cat back. I have redone the entire exhaust and made it true dual with an x pipe. I had a Magnaflow TruX muffler on it...ehh. I put a Borla ProXS muffler on it with 4 inch tips and finally got the sound I was looking for. The flowmaster tips were 2.5 ID and flared out to the 3.5 OD. These 4 inch tips are 4 inch from the pipe to the opening. Huge difference!
My 2004 5.3 has a single in dual out flowmaster super 10. 3 in 2.5 out with 4 inch tips as axle dumps. When I’m doing 65 I can feel the rumble up under my feet
It's already the end of Summer, next year I'm gonna get some exhaust work done on my Camry. I'm getting a 2.5 inlet tip from K-Tuned and just before I store my car this year, I'm gonna delete the resonator. The tip I'm getting for the exhaust exit is 18 inch long and it's going to be sitting at an angle sideways.
I beg to differ, I got an 02 chevy Rado with 5.3 extnd cab. True dual 2 1/4" pipe from cats to the start of the bed, then to 3" pipe bent to 90s behind tires with no tips straight cut. It's deep and echos good, but it can rap and pop if I hit the right rpms lol
I have an idea to propose. So, when you force large amounts of air thru a large hole, it makes little noise. BUT, if you forced the same amount of air thru a small hole, it makes a ton of noise. Maybe reducing it by an inch would create the most sound?
to me it sounds like the tipless exhaust is quieter at idle. the tips definitely have a deeper tone to them for sure. maybe im biased because i like loud and gaudy.
I have a 95 gmc 1500 and I put a 4.5 inch tip on it and it didn’t make a very big difference but I switched it to a 3.5 inch tip and it made a way bigger different
I just had my engine rebuilt it's a 5.7 l vortec the mechanic removed my cats but it's over fueling. I know you mentioned you removed your cats in this video how did you get around the ECM over fueling?
Vey interesting. I have the same truck 5.3 2019 with true duals to 6” shortys and it slaps alot and very loud. Got a ticket, threw on a x pipe with dynomax bullet mufflers. Hated the x pipe, cut it off sounds great these mufflers basically do nothing. Later this week, getting 8” shortys with pinched tips inside, or rolled edge 8” shorts havent decided yet.
You were right...there's a better rumble down low grumble with the bigger longer tips.....now try this, put a 4 inch lolly pop in the bigger tip, about 4 inches back inside.....the bigger tip. Then tell us what you think!!!Nice truck......
I'm looking at Flowmaster American Thunder Dual Exhaust System; Side/Rear Exit for my f150 V8 5.0 would that be a good one to get? Want something loud but not too overwhelming something that sounds just right seen some trucks that are loud but don't sound quite right
Can you put the exhaust tip inside the exhaust or do they have to be on the outside? Mine fits perfect without clamping it but it’s inside the hole not on the outside? Is that fine? Please let me know thank you
How do u keep them big tips on with out them falling off I had 5inch tips on my 02 GMC can't tell u how many Times one would brake on me got 4inch tips on my 2014 silverado true dull strate pipes.
Idk I think it depends on the engine, I have the older 5.3 and 8 inch rolled tips made it a lot deeper, whereas 5 inch angle cut tips clapped more, anyways you should just put those tips on Larry and take the cats off, it’s not like you drive it that much anyways lol, I’ve had true dual straights no cats for almost a year and I have gotten a single ticket, and I drive it literally every day
What part of Alabama are you in? I recently moved to AL and swear I've seen your truck and tag in my area. Or... maybe it was something close. Just curious.
I wonder how age factors into this. How many guys over the age of 40 think it looks and sounds better with the oversized tips? Twenty plus years ago I had a couple trucks that I put four inch echo tips on...thought it sounded good. The best part was constantly having hangers welded up from additional weight of the tips. It was kind of like having a band at the rear of the truck...the rhythmic ta-ting, ta-ting, ta-ting of the exhaust rattling mixed blub, blub, blub of the exhaust note.
The big tips definitley add a deep throatiness to the sound. I kinda prefer without the tips though because you get this raspy, classic muscle car sound. The tips makes the sound smooth like a finely tuned modern Corvette. I guess it depends on what you want. Either sounds awesome! By the way what mufflers do you have?
Actually this helped me a lot! Just what I needed- I drive a diesel tho😂 just gonna go with an 8” tip. Also, for the love of god, thank you.. for not having the Carolina Clap exhaust😭 I actually moved because of it, got rlly tired of my tinnitus ringing like hell every time (im 19💀💀💀) id drive bc them guys are everywhere, and all of them got that clap sound that I hate😂
There is that if exhausts ends before bumber the sound can come to your cabin. If the car is like SUV or something like that. I don't know if that goes side by side on the pick ups.
I gotta ask what kind of mufflers are those you runnin?........I have to say i like no tips sound on your truck...im runnin Super10s no cats on a 350 tbi 88 chevy Silverado......i got 18 inch long rolled tips 45's out each end of the rear bumper......Im thinking bout changing my tips to regular turn downs.
What exhaust setup would you recommend for 08 ram hemi 1500..currently has true dual 3 " xpipe with 2 flowmaster super 10s 3" inlet 3" outlet to 3 inch tips out the side behind the tires...its kinda deep but thought it would be louder also looking for a little higher pitch sound..any ideas?
