Reduction of FOV improves GPU usage for your pc/console and allows you to be more accurate when you're keeping the car within track limits by being closer to your wheels.
Lowering the field of view has another effect that is severely underrated and not often even known about or considered: lowering the FOV makes your car appear to be "slower", therefore giving yourself more comfort as your brain thinks "oh, this is manageable". Set the FOV to maximum and drive, and you'll feel like you're on a rollercoaster. Set it to minimum and you'll feel like you're driving a Fiat 500. It's a powerful thing, and lowering the FOV to where you only have the important stuff in your sight is crucial to any camera setting.
For hotlapping sure, but if you're racing actual other cars it's pretty important to have some idea where they are. The proximity arrows are useful, but no where near as good a reference as seeing actual hardware along side you. Also, I think keeping your FOV at least wide enough to see your front wheel placement in apex's is ultra critical to fast error fee (and barrier free) times.
It definitely makes a difference visually, always felt like with a smaller fov and moved forward and lower i could predict the rear better. Also without the camera movement it is so much easier on the eyes and feels more consistent

If you really wanted to eliminate all other variables, you shouldnt test in on the newest track where half an hour more practice makes a difference, test it on your best track where you feel most comfortable. You could explain the higher consistency and 0.1s better pace easily by having more training on that new circuit. You could also run a test in opposite setting order to see if it makes a difference.
Honestly, this video is great and I'll add my 2 cents: On F1 2020 I used to use Offset TV Cam, when I started to get more serious, I made some custom central T-Cam settings and then I hit a wall pace-wise... Around COTA... So I threw Jarno's settings on and I found 0.250s tenths of laptime, within 5 laps. It was crazy, and I've been running them ever since, just made some small tweaks for my liking. I've never used or liked any form of camera shake or movement, as it's ultimately a distraction.
The camera movement is there for immersion, to make you sense the inertia of the car and the G forces. But obviously it's not good for driving at the very edge of the car.
I only drive in cockpit mode as I think it more authentic to the driving experience. Plus it makes hitting you apex’s and racing line so much more challenging.
Alex. To truly do this right, and test your hypothesis that it makes a difference you will need to do the reverse. Do another race track with esports camera first 30 min. Then do default settings 30 min after. Your consistency laptimes could be due to you having raced this track 30 minutes before. Do another video on this with above! This vid was good to see

Spends 1000's on a rig with triple screens or VR and a full racing bucket seat, just to race in T cam 🤣. I get its faster but even as a peasant controller user I go cockpit cam as its more fun
@@SWatchik Yeah, more fun is key - I think a lot of people compare themselves to E-Sports racers, who are doing it with a totally different focus (out and out speed, compromising immersion/fun).
I recently started using cockpit cam and I felt even more of what Alex says. I didn't immediately improve pace, but consistency is the key point. I now make much less mistakes.
Pretty much everything esports players do or use (direct drive wheel, loadcell pedals etc.) are for consistency rather than lap time. Never underestimate the essence of consistency.
Damn this is awesome.... the esport camera setting makes me more consistent but the main part is that I often got a bit tired in my eyes when using the default... and I just thought that is was me. But without the camera movement I dont get tired in the eyes. Thanks for this video, it makes it much more easy and relaxing to drive.
This is completely logical, but also amusing to me because zerosing camera shake and movement is literally the first thing I've done since developers introduced the stupid effect some years ago. Old school F1 sim drivers grew up without such effects (although if you drove 3rd person you often got camera rotation lag, also you're a sick person) so for me the absolute best way to know what the car is doing is to have the chassis completely fixed in position on the screen, and use the relative shift of the track environment to perceive your fine movement and importantly correct under/over-steer early. The same is true of VR, you need a fixed horizon (anything else makes me nauseous) and no artificial (induced) vehicle chassis movements.
Yeah exactly. Your eyesight doesn’t bounce in your head when you’re being shaken about. Camera shake just fucks with your decision making. Makes it pretty much impossible to drive.
For eSports, I really think cockpit view should be mandatory. The game, the leagues, and the collaboration with F1 is pushing for the idea of a fully immersive game. All other views by drivers reduce any "realism" they're trying to achieve.
Agreed. I only use cockpit cam and I try my best to improve the maximum I can. If tv pod cam stands between me and top tier, I don't care. It simply doesn't feel right.
With a lower FOV you can see more and it becomes a little slower. So you can concentrate better on the curve. The key to better driving in a SIM (CADE). Great Video
No its not. I myself and a collegue drive WAY faster than some others who have 1000 dollar+ setups. And we use a controller..... A simrig only adds if you know how to race properly in the first place...
won't happen, because t cam is simply better. It's way more enjoyable for me. Modern f1 cars always have horrible visibility in sims. Don't force other people to play like you want. Let people enjoy things how people want to enjoy things.

But i get that - some ppl just want to use assists in their games(not only in racing games) and as long as it`s allowed then alright, but I`d rather play without any of them,but to each his own.
Would have loved to see a further test where you only apply the 0 camera movement and shake, but keep the default settings otherwise. That would let us see how much of the improvement is from the camera movement and how much from the different FOV.
Since there has been added camera setups.. i always used the camera whats used in real life.. i always put it in the middle, highest ,lowest angle i primaly want to see the tip where the numbers are and still seeing the wheel as well but never thought about this making you faster, consistence
The consistency could also come a bit from you driving the same track for over 30 minutes on beforehand + another 30 minutes after. Another track starting with esports camera and switching to non-esports maybe would have been closer? Idk, just a thought. However, with that said I still think the esports camera settings are better once you get used to it. Thanks for the video mate!
I was one of them idiots that used to always drive-in 3rd person view until the beginning of this year when I started using The same view as you gamers And it's made me a much faster gamer, I think I may start experimenting with some of the things you've said but definite Removal of the camera shake, Great work as always Alex Make sure you put Ben in the bin tomorrow👍😆

Listen, I don’t understand why they aren’t forced to use cockpit cam in league racing, I know everyone uses the cam being discussed in this video, but I would think Esports would make you use the cockpit cam
Driving with the TV pod camera shouldn’t be allowed in ESport. After all these guys are supposed to be the best and I figure they should be racing as close as possible to real life.
Dude yiur best time was in lap 15. So you were more used to the track regaurdless. I am sure the camera setup help not shaking helps but I find the more laps I run the better my times will get later on in my session.
I think camera view does matter, because I usually play in TV cam, and I put in my fastest lap I could possibly squeeze out on Sakhir. I decided to change my view to "Far chase", and I knocked off about half a second on my time. Which I found very interesting because I usually suck at 3rd person racing games, and the fact that I was able to put in a lap time faster than what I thought was possible for me too, I couldn't believe it. Only worked on Bahrain tho cause that's my best track. Every other track I try on I end up in the barrier, lol.
Coming from CSGO ( really guys look up the massive rabbit hole of resolutions, settings, mice, everything there is snake oil or helpful ) Camera settings are almost all preference The camera movement is actually helpful, maintains your reference points as the car isn’t moving around, instead of both the car and camera moving around your acreen
I originally used a higher fov but the setting are near default and changed similar to Jarno’s but changed it suit myself and I went around 3 tenths faster a lap
I don't know how TV pod is the e sports camera real drivers don't have the luxury of having this view it seems a bit like cheating I've only used cockpit makes it feel more authentic. I would like to see them only use cockpit view for comp
So, idk why, but ive been significantly slower than before. On every track ive driven now , im loosing 2 to almost 6 tents per Lap, its undriveable for me. I lose the back way more often, i cant see corners to tell me where to put the car, i dont have a feel for corner soeed so im constantly too fast or too slow in corners. I dont know why but for me this is the worst Camera setting ive ever had, even the standard one makes me feel more comfortable
It should be. The most important thing for these camera settings is to be on top of your car looking down and no camera movement. I think Alex also has an ultra wide but im not sure
Isn't it posible that you got used to the TRACK as well?? I suggest you prove me wrong by doing FIRST a 30-minute run on another track with E-sports settings, then after that, another 30-minute run with default settings. I feel, you'll put better laptimes on the default settings, because you'll get used to the track...not just the camera settings!
Just imagine if real life drivers can sit on their air box and drive as well. Imagine all the lap records that will be broken. Lol. Esports should not allow this view. It is not representative of the sport. Drivers have to contest with visibility in real life. I really do not understand the logic of not allowing stability control or abs or tc but allowing players to use an unrealistic view that provides an advantage.
@@bbbmarko1 lol. I think you mean f1 all stars by Codemaster. This should be an esport title as the drivers head is exactly where the t-cam is. So by that logic, it is ultra realistic SIM.
Interesting. I know the camera view is preferred by pros cos it’s faster but I would prefer if they all had to race first person and with vr ( I know it’s not supported yet) but that would seperate the gamers from the racers IMO.
all these F1 esports players should be locked to cockpit cam during the event. It looks dumb when i watch the esports events and everyone is using the tv cam.
Your giving to much credit to this. It's litteraly all personal preference and the reason why yarnos are good is because he's obvs good and would of spent a fair amount of time perfecting the values. All the major difference is, is the camera shake and movement which everyone should already have that turned off as soon as they get the game like its litteraly the same as motion blur in an fps. Pretty common sense to turn that shit off
@@AlexGillon well obviously dude, because it's faster...gives you a false sense of your surroundings to make out your apex and breaking points easier. Unless cockpit is forced those guys will continue to use the easiest way.
Imo people should use whatever camera they like better, but I think it would be interesting if esports competitions required all drivers to use cockpit view.

all these settings seem wrong to me and do not reflect the true physiognomy of a formula 1 view, all these views should be prohibited except the real view of the cocpit, shame that we can no longer activate (force) it in the parameters race, after that remains my point of view, everyone is free to choose their view but it is regretable
This is just one more example why esport is a joke. With no cockpit view and 25% races.. Its ridiculous. Or its 30% now? Anyway, esport races are so boring. They hype them up,but there is no startegy. Even the pace in such a short races doesnt do much of a diference. No pit stop strategy. Game doesnt have the spave to evolve. Camera view looks crappy. Looks like the driver is standing in the cockpit. Why get a rig and all the equipment if you’re not even going to run in cockpit. Kinda lame.
