Do I Ever Regret Selling My Games? 

What game(s) or consoles do you regret selling the most?

I regret selling all my childhood games to buy new games as a kid because most of those games were games I loved and I had to go back and rebuy them again. Now if I sell a game as an adult it is usually a game that I really don’t like at all so I never feel bad about selling 😂

I never sell off anything these days tbh, mainly because I know what I'm like, I know I'll want to play it again at some point and I'd rather have it already than be at the mercy of re-sellers. :)

For many years I bought new games, played through them, then gave them & older consoles to friends & family. I only thought of the next new shiny game & the latest console, so this was my pattern through the 90's & 2000's up until 2010 & at that point I started to really miss my older games & their special experiences. So I have spent a lot of money & time re-purchasing all of them, along with the correlating strategy guides & the consoles to play them on. I was one of the biggest game contributors to "Classic Game Room", where Mark & others there filmed terrific game reviews with them that everyone could enjoy, so I have no regrets!

Not too long ago I inherited my wife's grandmother's NES collection (nothing crazy, Mario, Castlevania, Dragon Warrior, Tetris, that kind of stuff). I had never inherited video games from anyone before, what I did was integrate it into my collection, put a tiny label on those games that I knew it was from that inheritance, and I immediately sold off any duplicates I already had (and luckily wasn't anything I had from my childhood surprisingly, I still have everything from when I was a kid).

I remember getting a loose copy of Shantae on Gameboy Color for $8 at a pawn shop. I didn't know it was an expensive game until I found out that same day. I thought, "I wonder if someone would trade a loose copy of Earthbound for SNES." So I posted on a Facebook group that if anyone has a copy of Earthbound, I would trade my Shantae. A person messaged me and we worked it out. Best part? He fixed the battery in my Earthbound cartridge. It saves too. Do I regret trading my Shantae cartridge? A little but I got a good deal from the guy who traded with me. Truthfully, I'm more of a Super Nintendo fan than the GBC. Positive thing is I didn't have to pay $300+ for a game I've been after unless it was Magical Pop'n which costed me $323 on Ebay. Special thanks to Pete for getting me into that game.

I had my first vendor experience this year at a small local show and you are right, it's a blast! Not only was it nice clearing out all the extras I had, but the conversations and interactions with the customers made my day! I can't wait until I get to do it again for that reason alone.

Always great to hear from a fellow collector on this question. I haven't sold many things from my collection, but there has been a few big ones, such as my factory sealed/mint Earthbound game in 2008. I kept getting emails from a girl on NintendoAge, who was a huge EB fan. I honestly didn't have much of a connection with the game. I thought it was good, but maybe I was a bit old for it at the time it came out. (I was 24). So I figured she would actually appreciate it. I gave her a heck of a deal on it too. I could have waited a few more years , had it graded, and sold it for much more. I don't regret it though. She was very happy with it, and I didn't miss it. If I ever want to play it, there are many ways. I think the only thing that comes to mind, when I think of regretting something, is a custom Crash Bandicoot shirt, that someone made for me, back in 1996 while I was working at Babbage's. This very talented artist, who also worked in the same mall, selling paintings, and custom airbrushed clothing, asked if I wanted a custom shirt, a thank you for helping him pick out a new PlayStation console, and several games. He just needed some info on the console, and some suggestions for good games. Anyway, I said it wasn't necessary, but he insisted. I pointed to a random Crash Bandicoot strategy guide, (by Dimension Publishing), and asked if he could paint it. He said of course, and that he'd return the guide in an hour. Then he showed up about 30 minutes later with an incredible looking shirt! It somehow looked even better than the original art! The colors and lighting effects just popped off of the shirt. I sold it 20 years ago (for $150), but I think of it often, and regret selling it. It's kind of silly, since I never wore it, but I loved displaying it. Perhaps it was time for someone else to appreciate it too. -MattH

I regret selling my Saturn collection. Radiant Silvergun, Kingdom Grandprix, Soukyugurentai, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Guardian Heroes, Shining Force 3 Premium Disc, Sexy Parodius, Taromaru, Metal Slug and others. All mint condition. All have increased in value since I sold them.

Actually, my regret was buying way too many games. Felt so good selling it all off... it's like I could breath again, and it became possible to go back to just playing and enjoying videogames instead of burning what little time/money I had amassing clutter on shelves.

Great introspective on collecting! I've been having to go through old stuff of mine at my parents' place as they prep to move later this year, and can confirm, it does feel really good to let go of stuff (and not even just referring to games here too)! I definitely even still have too much, so another round of selling will likely be on the way once their move date gets closer. Still, love the memories going through a lot of that stuff brings back. Over the last several years, I have sold off all my games from 3rd, 4th, 5th 6th gens. No regrets what so ever. Especially since I got over $25k for them. I still have close to $40k left.

After all these years your still so grounded in this collecting community. I agree I've let so many things go to people as they would appreciate it. Been stung a few times though trading with RU-vidrs where I've given them a good deal just to see them turn around and flip it, but them people have been cut out since that.

I remember selling only a handful of my games throughout the years and I don't regret selling any of them . Now that I am a middle-age man, I feel is time for me to start selling part of my collection, and only keep what I really like/play. There comes a time in your life that you want to simplify things. I have so many video games. More than I can play in a life time. Thank you for this video.

I regret selling Skylanders on the switch ... Because a few months later it became collectable and very valuable.. its not about the money but its so hard to find that game now ...

At school I traded my copy of Ogre Battle 64 for The Sims Bustin Out.

My take on it this; I do regret it from a financial POV, as many of the games I sold as a teenager were sold cheap and have increased in value quite a bit. However, on the flip side, I just see the whole process as part of growing up. At the time I was more interested in buying clothes and just interested in other aspects of life. And in time I have come back around and I have also re-purchased a good chunk of the games I really enjoyed.

I somehow always held on to the games from my childhood that had significance. I sold off my gamecube, ps2 and xbox collections but held on to my N64 that my grandparents bought me for my 10th birthday. I have my original gameboy from 1993, and even when I sold my PS2 I kept a few games for some reason. Glad I did.

Thanks for the video. Honestly I'm the type of person you described in the video. Someone who doesn't really like to 'let go' of things. I'd done what you're suggesting over the years which involves just selling some stuff here or there to see how it goes, but honestly, I still don't like it. Frankly I think a lot what drives these feelings is how ridiculous some of the prices are these days. It's hard to feel good about selling stuff and then (potentially) being locked out of ever owning it again because the hobby has mutated into this mess where a 20 dollar game one day is a hundred dollar game the next. Imagine having a small PS2 collection or something like that and selling it for a couple hundred bucks and 5 years later it's thousands if you want to own it again. It warps your reasoning into just saying f-it. Only sell the stuff you really don't want and don't ever think you'll want again. Otherwise just keep everything. It'll be fine to sell dupes but that's it.

I sold off Misadventures of Tron Bonne for $30 in 2009. At the time it was reselling for around $60. Had my fun with it, cute charming game, but I wasn't so emotionallly attached. And I needed money at the time

Only regret I have selling games was my copy of Pokémon Crystal. My brother and I used to sell games as kids sometimes but usually they were crappy licensed games or the super common games that aren’t too pricy even today but the one franchise we never sold were Pokémon games. We loved to replay them and we had so much attachment to them that they always stayed. I picked up Pokémon Crystal and Pokémon Yellow at a local game store for like $10 each and played through them. Neither of us liked them so when it came time to sell, we decided they would go. We sold them at GameStop for probably next to nothing. Years later, I wanted to finish out the complete Pokémon set (not cib for GB/GBA) and realized that Crystal was now like $150 cart only... I’m happy my brother and I didn’t sell all our Pokémon games but man do I wish I kept Crystal. Ended up getting back Yellow from a friend so still to this day I’m only missing Crystal (and a couple of the switch games but I’ll pick them up toward the end of the switches life cycle.)

As for your grandfathers games (my condolences as well, for your loss), just remember the games are physical and will come and go. They represent the memories that you'll never forget and can never be taken from you. So even though you sold some of those games, the memories live on which is the important part. I regret selling my childhood SNES collection myself. Would give a lot to have my original console back and my CIB games. Such is life, live and learn!

Been watching your channel for a decade. Would love to sit and chat games with you sometime. That sounds like a blast. Just sitting and talking with someone who cares about games as much as you, yourself do. Videogames forever.

last year i finally decided to get rid of my Gamecube games. I had maybe 200-250 or so and took them to the local gamestore. it was hard but im glad i did it. im thinking about getting rid of the pokemon games now

I sold my N64 collection back in the early 00's to buy a skateboard, I miss that collection.

I sold Jet Set Radio Future when I was a kid and it hurts my soul. It was my favorite game ever at the time, and one of my favorites of all time still but I traded it in to GameStop to get newer games and I wish I had it. Not even to play it or anything, but just to have it in my hands. Feelsbadman.

I really regret selling my massive Sega collection of Genesis,Saturn and Dreamcast games and consoles for someone else to enjoy. When the guy came over to pick everything up, I was surprised it was an old guy in his 60s ! This was around 20 years ago before game collecting existed. Now that I think about it, it wasn’t worth the few hundred bucks I got back then. Good memories though 😊

I do regret not having my original Wii/GameCube collection. I almost made the same mistake doing away with my PS4, but I caught myself.

Some guy on my last video was giving me shit cuz I said I sold my vita collection. Like dude, it’s ok. People move on from things. People change what they’re interested in. I have no shame selling off stuff. And I only miss my psp collection.

I regret selling my first NES but I do still have my very first computer, an Atari 800, with all of the peripherals. Playing pirated games from 5-1/4" floppy disks on that Atari was my first exposure to video games.

Thankfully I didn't sell too many of my games back in the day. I only sold a few of them and there was really only one I wound up regretting selling (Gauntlet Dark Legacy) but luckily I've since bought the game back. If I enjoyed a game I'll usually hold on to it because I'll usually wind up having the urge to replay it again sometime in the future. Had this urge not too long ago with the previously mentioned game, hence why I rebought it. The only time I'd sell a game is if I just didn't like it whenever I played it. And also thankfully I wasn't forced to get rid of my previous games and consoles when I got a new one. So I still have all of my childhood games and consoles. I still own my original PS1 and I'd never get rid of it. Haven't hooked it up in years, and I have a PS2/PS3 to play PS1 games on so I have no reason to ever really use it. But it has too much sentimental value to me to ever get rid of it. It was my first game console and my introduction to gaming in general.

I regret LOSING video games, not selling them. So many playstation 1 games missing over time - and the consoles themselves! Ps1, original Xbox, PS2 - probably broken, rotting somewhere in my mother’s house. A shame. Wish I looked after these things better as a kid

I regret selling all of my Pokémon games and Gameboy sps right before Covid. Really wish I could’ve played through all of them that year. Wish I could play them now too.

I'm not in the game collecting space at all but what you said about doing conventions really resonated with me. I make zines and small press comics and do a bunch of cons and barely ever make profit. But that's not why I do them. I do them to see what other people are making and to have great conversations with people about art and comics. I love making folk laugh and making them happy. I've so many amazing memories of chatting to people at conventions and I'd much rather have those memories than not have them but to have made a bunch of money instead.

Back when I was in High School I was borrowing and trading games with kids from school. We rotated some games. This was how I played Chronotrigger for the first time and loved it. However, I switched my Earthbound for this kid's Parasite Eve. After awhile I wanted to trade back, but he never did. I was stupid for not being more agressive and getting my stuff back. Now I don't trade games or things with anybody.

I do actually refer to it as "Pete's Gotcha Force" but you can rest knowing I am keeping it safe. Thank you

I regret selling my CIB Chrono Trigger, which was one of my first eBay purchases from around 2002. Seeing the prices on that game now makes me sick to my stomach. I do still have a loose cart of that game. I also regret selling my full collection of PS1 Squaresoft games. I've since re-bought some of them but man, the prices are going up and up for those too. I was OBSESSED with Squaresoft when I was back in high school, and had a goal to collect every game they'd made. I haven't done that yet but I do still love a lot of those games.

when i sold my collection to gamestop, i felt burned the first month but then i got over it. having emulation like the snes mini, really makes me feel more burned having spent all that money on the physical games. im all for physical media and cant stand where gaming is going, or where its currently at, however, those games had their times and now i can enjoy them in millions of ways. so i dont feel any regrets to having no physical games anymore. i now keep boxes because i love the art, it makes my room look cool. and i adore game music more than the actual games anway.

A follow up question could be: Do you regret NOT buying a game when you had the chance to? One of my biggest regret was not buying Final Fight 3 at my local videogame shop in the mid 90’s. Snes was on the way out and FF3 had just been released. At the same time N64 and PS was out with Final Fantasy 7 and Mario 64 and those games just caught my attention much more than FF3.

I used to have Fatal Fury Special and Samurai Shodown ports for Sega CD that I traded in back in the late 90s. Those games I regret trading in back then, to name a few. Had I held on to them now, I could have gotten $100-$200+, more or less, instead.

I regretted trading in FF7 and Resi 2 to get WWF Attitude back in the day, however I got rid of about 95% of my collection in the last year and don't regret it one bit. For me it was almost just about getting the next thing for the collection, rather than appreciating what I actually had in it.

I went through this process a few years ago when I wanted to get a PS5 after being out of gaming since the PS3 days. I wanted to fund the PS5 purchase purely through selling old retro games and I parted with pieces of my collection I never thought I could. I still felt the need to keep the pictures I took of them but it did feel good to prune the collection. And after getting the PS5 and having such a good time with gaming again, catching up on the PS4 titles I missed out on plus the new games, I made those new memories sorta tied with the collection that was sold to pay for it, and it was so worth it. Now my collection has grown again but I feel much more ready and able to prune again someday when the time comes.

In the late 90’s, early 2000’s my parents would take my brother and I to pawn shops and we would buy a ton of NES games for usually a dollar or two. We amassed a pretty large collection, including some heavies like Zombie Nation and Swamp Thing. At some point my brother traded the entire collection to his friend for a skateboard without telling me. So yeah, I regret him doing that… 😅

I sold and returned some games when I was older. I have no regrets about these decisions. For the PS2 I returned these games back to gamestop after I bought and tried them. IHRA Drag racing, Driven, Alfa Romero Racing Italiano, Maximo Ghosts to glory, Robotech Battlecry, Transformers, Star trek encounters, Escape from monkey island, World of destruction league thunder tanks, WWE crush hour, Legends of wrestling, Sprint cars road to knoxville. For the Wii Kidz sprts hockey, kidz sports basketball, spy games elevator mission, impossible mission. For the NDS Myst, Noahs ark, After, Moshi monsters, Winter's tail. These games all SUCKED. Now there were some games I sold through craigslist. They were duplicates of xbox 360 games and a broken Pokemon blue. The guy really wanted the Pokemon blue and took the other games as a bonus. He was able to fix the pokemon blue. Good for him. Another guy wanted old nostalgic stuff. So I sold him old candy from the 90's and xbox 360 games. He said If I had any sealed VHS tapes to call him. Good for him too.

I regret selling my childhood games and consoles. My parents bought them for me and I sold them without a second thought. Nowadays I only sell games I bought myself and I keep the games that were gifted to me by friends and family.

I’m loving all the uploads, Pete! I regret selling some of my DS games. I always focussed on handheld and had some pretty rare games like Flower Sun and Rain but sold some of it..

I have always given away some of my games. If it made someone happy, i swear it comes back to you. i gave away a load of ps2 games and a loade(6,000 games) wii to an old friend. It came back in the form of a nice snare drum and drumset(yes, we are drummers). I am more than happy to give my games away a lot of the times.

Ehhh, Money comes and goes. When i got clean and the reality of my actions really set in... i told myself i would get all of my games (and other stuff) back and never let them go again. I definitely did that and then some. Sidenote, RIP grandpa! My great grandpa was a ww2 vet as well. He taught me a lot about life in general and being a man. There's a very good reason why they were called the greatest generation.

I use to have a full set of sealed Amiibos and JP exclusives. When the Zelda Loftwing released that's when I sold all of them because I was really upset with what Nintendo was doing with them. Did the same thing for all of my Sony 1st-party collector's editions, once they started not having discs anymore I sold off all the ones that I had. Made plenty of money and more space to get games I really wanted.

I massively regret selling my switch collection. I got rid of my switch collection when I got my ps5 and Xbox at release. Worst decision, I didn’t instantly regret it. But I started to miss the type of gameplay that seemed uniquely assigned to the switch. I’m currently stuck buying back most of the games I sold and I’m paying easily double the price I sold at for most of them. Lesson learned. You’re likely better holding onto things.

I got the N64 for my birthday around the time it had just released. Had it for years and my mom suddenly gave it away. I was pissed. I had alot of classic games that are pricey today. Ive owned a sega, snes, n64, ps2, ps3 and a GameCube. Wish I could get them all back

I've never sold any game since childhood. I was always very picky about which games I bought.

I've got a few that I've sold over the years, I've never tried to get any of it back because the prices ruined the fun.

At this point its fairly simple for me, I keep physical games I treasure, want and I like to play! Anything else can go, no regrets about that. Sometimes as time goes by I'll decide I dont really care about a certain game, or will go off it for some reasons, so I'll sell, why not!? There are definite exceptions, but I see no real reason keeping a game I don't really *like to play* at some point. I think lots of people collect games they dont really like that much. I have a collection because I'm in different moods to play differnt games at different times. The other issue is games take up a lot of space, which is more of an issue for people with families and kids I think.

Sold my heartgold for $70 back in 2018…that thing could easily get me $300+ nowdays, but more importantly I’m in a mood to play second gen remake again now I gotta go hunt down someone else’s copy. It just won’t hit the same…

I regret selling panzer Dragoon Saga for 50. Mine was from Toys R us. They only had one. Played through it once and sold it because I'll never have the time to play it again and figured I'd let someone else get to play it. At the time no emulators played it

I was broke in the early 2000's and had to sell the majority of my games, including Suikoden II for PSN, in mint condition, for $40. That still haunts me to this day.

I don't regret selling my games. I sold my ps2 and gcn collection along with silent hill 1, chibi robo and haunting ground back when they were not worth alot. Then rebought them later when they were more pricey. My most sentimental game is conker live and reloaded which is the only game from when I was in highschool

I sold my childhood gameboy collection in 2005 when I was 15 to buy a psp. I replaced most of the collection over the years but I deeply regret selling my originals. (Thankfully Pokemon crystal survived since it was in the n64 transfer pak and I forgot to sell it with the others )

I usually don’t regret selling my games but I really wish I didn’t sell my copies of Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD. I’ve since had the urge to replay them and they’re going for almost double what I sold them for now

I've been very good at holding on to things so I don't really regret any sales. I sold a stack of PS2 games a few years ago and I can't even remember the list minus the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger trilogy which I do not really regret. Just a slew of games that had rotted on my shelf for a decade or more.

A couple years ago I sold my copy of Disney Sports Basketball on GameCube (no manual) for around $170. I thought that surely no one will pay that much for a Disney sports game but sure enough it has quadrupled in value since 🤦‍♂️

I'd love to get one of your doubles. It'd be a cool story. I'm just not sure when I'd be at a convention at this point.

I regret selling Panzer Dragoon Saga for $600 several years ago. I don't regret never playing the game again. The only true regret would be to not have Wave Race 64 at my disposal on a daily basis. Got that taken care of.

I regret selling my Dreamcast collection as I had about 20 games including Power Stone 1&2, MVC 1&2, both Sonic’s, RE2,RE3 and Code Veronica, Canon Spike,Garou Mark of the Wolves, Street Fighter 3rd Strike and a few many others. I did in order to build up my OG Xbox Collection shortly after the launch of Xbox so I didn’t really get much for those games and consoles either and I actually enjoyed my Dreamcast more than my Xbox. I rebought the Dreamcast in 2013 and slowly trying to rebuild my collection but I can assure it will cost me way more to do so than I did back then lol

I did regret selling them, but as I needed money at that time, so I feel fine letting them go.

I sold 33 c.i.b. Super Nintendo games for $155 and my ROB version NES with controllers and 65 c.i.b. games for $300. Still til this day I hear it from my Brother and even my nephew why I did that. 😢 Sold off my Gameboy collection for cheap too, I forget how much, probably about $150 for everything 30+ games….

God, to still have the copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga, even more so that I had gotten it at a pawn show that mislabeled it as the first game for 10 bucks. The problem, you could not get anywhere in the game. I don't know what was going on, but after about 2 hours of the game a new area should open up and it did not in that copy. Still, had one and gave it up foolishly.

i don't regret selling a single one, you don't need the physical copies tbh, it's cool for the novelty if you've never seen one to have a look at the artwork and all that but tbh i just play saturn for instance with the satiator and don't even own a single disc for it anymore and it doesn't really matter, i still get to play all the games and on original hardware

Love your channel man. Keep em coming. I would say that I sold my Xbox 360 to help a homeless lady one time. Bought her a bunch of products to help her get by. Idk if I regret it or not. Lol but I have recouped all of my old stuff from that time and God has been good in giving back what I foolishly sold. Learned a hard lesson not to help homeless people shortly after but yea. I still had my DS and Fire Emblem to get me by. Don't remember what happened to those items either. Rough patch in life I guess.

I regret selling my Halo Xbox in the box for $60 in a yard sale but it did go to a Grandma for her grand kids to play on so I'm sure it got plenty of use and maybe even destroyed in that sadly. I also regret buying 3D Dot Heroes from GameStop foir $5 on sale but since it came in a generic case, I actually returned it...what was I thinking lol.

I honestly think there’s way more games I regret not buying than games I sold. Oh it’s $20 now ? I’ll still wait a little bit. 3 months later no copies for under $100 🤦

I sold over 99% of my games in 2022-2023 to help pay cost of living and unsuspected medical bills. Funny enough I have some games I did regret selling (my castlevania games and most of my dragon quest games). But my heavy hitters like Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Skies of Arcadia Legends not so much. I glad I owned them at one stage but don't feel the need to own them again. Plus I'm kinda over buying retro consoles due to not being able to invest in a proper set-up to use them effectively. Trying to find appropriate TV's or people to mod hd switches in Australia is non-existent. So I lost interest years ago. Handhelds are still good since you only need the system haha. But I'm happy nowadays since I feel like I can collect again from square one feeling like a New Game + haha.

I wouldn’t regret selling some of my games if they were games I literally will never play ever again and they didn’t spark any memories during the experience playing them.

The only regret I have is giving my copy of Valkyrie Profile to a neighbor. He still has it, but completely forgot I gave it to him.
