An ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator) is a great way to fight indoor air pollution. Most homes built today focus only on insulation and air sealing without considering bringing in fresh air as needed. An ERV can help remove toxins in an energy efficient manner. Purchase an ERV - diy.crawlspaceninja.com/produ...

Man this was really helpful. I've been reading up on ERV for my small cabin and been a little confused. You really laid it all out perfectly. Thanks!

I use a Panasonic FV-10VE1 to both bring in fresh air into my living space and to exhaust air from my insulated and encapsulated crawlspace. I have it set to run continuously at 50CFM and I have a couple dummy floor vents that allow air to move from the living space into the crawlspace. By creating positive pressure in the living space and negative pressure in the crawlspace it creates a continuous one-way flow of air. This allowed me to meet local code requirements for fresh air ventilation and crawlspace ventilation with one unit.

Garrick, this sounds really interesting! We'd love to see a picture of what this setup looks like. If you're willing to share, you can send it to us via the Ask a Ninja form here: crawlspaceninja.com/ask-a-ninja/

I deal with the following: Super cold and dry(30% humidity) winters (-25c) and warm/humid summers 60-80% humidity and 25-40c temps

I have a basement apartment with a window air conditioner in the summer. It has radiant ceiling heat. Will one of these units work? And if so, how would you run the ducting?

Hey I have a question? I have a 200 square foot tiny house close foam insulation and so because I use it to also all of my plants in the winter time I and of course because of transpiration of the plants and evaporation of the soil after a watering on top of two adult people breathing, I am getting a lot of humidity in the winter time. I also live in South West Virginia so we have very humid summers here too. Which system would work best an HRV or ERV? I know both clean the air quality I am just more concerned with humidity... I see alot of people in tiny houses are using HRV but what do you think I should do. Also I am looking for a small unit any ideas about the system for the room capacity I should use?

My basment apt is super dry in the winter... like if I don't have a humidifer humidity is like 20%.. will the ERV system help raise the indoor humidity?

Air Sealing + ERV = Air Quality and Comfort

Trying to figure out the best solution to improve our house air quality we do not have forced air. We have base bored heating. Live in MN cold Winters humid Summers. Our basement gets really damp and musty even with dehumidifier running everyday. We are renovating our finished basement to have our kids in their own rooms. With home dehumidifiers, basement exhaust fans, attic exhaust fans all the systems. How do you know which option is the best? Do you possibly have any suggestions?

If your basement is damp then probably should spray foam or foam board the walls and get a membrane on the floor (dmx) if possible. The musty smell is almost always from mold spores in the air, even if mold isn't present, we are super sensitive to the smell of mold. I have lots of humidity that comes through my basement, which is why I'm getting it all spray foamed and then a couple of crawl spaces spray foamed as well. It also helps with radon.

How tight does your home need to be in order to need mechanical ventilation?
@Lolatyou332
@Lolatyou332 2 года назад
I think for code, it has to be extremely tight to be required, like insanely tight with spray foam. In general, I would say if your attic isn't vented (spray foamed) you probably don't need one. Never hurts to have one though as you can always lower the amount of air it is pushing in and out. You can have it pushing in more air than it is pulling out and that will help to push out air through gaps in your home, while also allowing you to pull out stale air in areas like bathrooms and kitchens. Having your home pressurized should help with radon too I believe, as it could push outside air from coming in through uncontrolled areas. I've spray foamed my roofline and I'm about to spray foam my basement, so I'm going to install one. I also run a dehumidifier constantly and will run multiple small HEPA (carbon filtered) air purifiers throughout my house to combat dust, mold spores, and odors.

It would be best to check Local Codes

Problem with the ERV's is, adding too much uncontrolled humidity. Not sure where that would realistically not be the case. I would go whole home dehu with a fresh air return into the home and exhausting out. Nice video

That's a great point. We feel ERV's are important but some homes can still require humidifiers and dehumidifiers depending on time of year and climate. Thanks for your insight!
