At last, a video that breaks all the BS behind the Impact screwdrivers. A cordless driller with a 1,3Ah battery would easily break your arm into tiny pieces if it would like to. Simply, use a genius invention called "good screws with Torx heads" and you are all good to go. If you can't make a tightening on a crew with your arm stretched using cordless driller how the hell you gonna drill the 12mm hole in a concrete wall using 230V SDS Plus machine in the same position? BTW I'm wondering, how Impact (brushless) driver will help me when I need to polish or sharpen an aluminum arrow with steel made tip? Is there any "arrow adapter" on the market? Exactly.

The stupid thing is an impact driver is all about torque….yet has no calibrated torque number settings or scale readout for you. All you know is it is giving the fastener a really good hard twist…in some cases too hard. For this reason, and despite that most YT tool channels seem to ubiquitously use impact drivers in favour of drills, I prefer a powerful hammer action drill driver with clutch settings so I won’t strip the smaller screws and it will still power deep into concrete if I ask it to. If I ever need to undo lug nuts on a truck wheel…then I’ll think about an impact driver (but then it will more likely benefit from a dedicated wheel nut impact wrench). Thanks for the video👍

I've been a professional woodworker for nearly a decade now and I've never ran into a situation where i absolutely needed an impact driver. I won't deny the usefuleness of an impact but my go to is a combi drill. Drills are way faster, quieter and way better to "dose" to not overdireve a fastener.

Ok abit harsh lol, let's say if you was doing a decking job would you not go for the impact driver then?? Plus don't you find you can get in tighter spacers with impact for instance when you're doing kitchens??
@bilbobeutlin1705
@bilbobeutlin1705 4 года назад
@@booboo-nl3wi Most of the Decks in my area have a aluminium or a woodcomposite substructure and are screwed down with stainless steel screws. They rip off pretty easily in alu or wpc so i use the drill and set the clutch on a low setting so i don't have to worry about it. For furniture i mostly use my 12v driver, it has all the power you need for this little screws and its super compact and lightweight. As i wrote in my first comment i won't deny the usefullness of an impact. Really big legs are a pain in the ass with a drill especially when you're up on a ladder or a rafter. But i rarely need screws big enough to cause major kickback so i use my combidrill because it's faster and quieter.
@ChargedPulsar
@ChargedPulsar Год назад
@@booboo-nl3wi Professional means, he is doing a profession for money. Who are you to decide who gets paid for which kind of work? These comments are just childish. He can carve the wood with a spoon if he likes to and then sell it. And can call it "professional work for woodworking", what do you care? Combi driver can do it all, and there are quality combi drivers that can even "pulse" when it senses high torque and simulate a impact driver effectiveness. Not necessarily to race with the performance of specialized impact drivers. But see, tools are just choices. Whichever you like, you use it. Maybe just the sound of it annoys you or that it looks cool or that your grandfather gave you the tool. Please have some more respect to other people's efforts and choices.
@tycox8704

You confirmed what I was only able to intuit. I purchased a set that included a combi driver and impact driver. The impact driver felt like overkill for the #8 and #10 woodscrews, regardless of their length. Indeed, the impact driver cammed out the heads on the longer screws. Alternatively, the combi drill competently drove the long screws without deforming them. The impact driver seems more suited for bolts and lag screws. The combi driver has more uses and should be the first tool of choice.

You have a job where you have to drill a pilot then drive a screw in one at a time you get arsed off with changing between drill bits you buy an impact driver then you fall in love with it and start looking at all the other cordless toys you can buy without having to buy new batteries. I first bought an impact driver as a tag-along with a kit of other tools that I actually needed, and mostly just dismissed it. Here several years later, my tune has changed. I drive a lot more fasteners than I drill holes, and while a drill can drive fasteners, the impact driver does it MUCH better. I pretty much only use my drill.........to drill holes. My impact driver gets used easily 4x more often. If I could only have one, I'd have the drill and not like the limitation at all, but if you can at all, definitely get the impact driver as well.

I believe you forgot to mention that 1 of the biggest advantages of an “impact driver “ is that the way it delivers it’s power(short spurts)is that it keeps the bit or socket from stripping the screw head! However, you did a great job on explaining, everything.

I'm was a combi driver guy, I don't understand the extra tool and can't justify their need. But when I was installing something on the ceiling, combi driver was hard to manage because it was twisting my arm and the sensitive position didn't allow handle the kickback properly. Then I realised, that the impact driver would have been a better choice there. One more tool can be a good option at times where it matters.

In the US, we rarely use the term “impact drill”, instead we use “hammer drill”, less confusion. However, there is still some confusion between “impact driver” and “impact wrench”. People in the trades know the difference, as do some DIY folks, but many consumers don’t realize they are two different, but closely related things. Good demonstration and thanks for demonstrating that a drill/driver is sometimes faster than an impact driver. Choose the right tool for the job...when you have the right tool available.

Nice vid, another plus for the impact driver is- the chuck is much smaller and does not need that giant plastic spinning grip like a drill. So when u are in close quarters, the impact driver is much less likely to mark up any finished work nearby.

Genuinely interesting. I had noticed that the Impact Driver made a lot of fuss over long screws, 'more on withdrawal that insertion'. Maybe 80mm is about the max appropriate length for my machine. And I had wondered why the Impact Driver seemed so light to use, aside from the weight and size difference; it's the lack of torque on the wrist that makes the difference, thank you for explaining that. Yes the Impact driver does not have a torque setting but after placing the first couple of screws with caution, one can easily 'work by ear'. I love my little machine, it's a godsend, fast and light. Batteries (and my wrist) go on & on & on again. Lol :)

this is a video that a lot of people need to watch and understand. i read a lot of bad reviews on impact drivers where the product wore out after several months or it started smoking after a few days of use and every one of them were using their impact drivers to drill screws into wood. as this video explains, impact drivers aren't meant for that application and they should have used a drill. impact drivers are for breaking and tightening. drills are for driving. drivers are circular impact and drills are forward impact. you're overworking the motor in your impact driver and wearing out the anvil using it to drill screws.

The best hands down stand up delivery I have ever seen or heard on the topic of “things I should have known.“ The delivery and demonstration of what the similarities are and the dangers of confusing the two are unmatched , and would have without a doubt ,taken me out, without a doubt on my best day of teaching. The highlight of the video could very easily be the static display of the hammer and anvil ratcheting or even the live demo of the screwing but that would be to short change yourself, and you might as well watch the UN conference with Korean Pop (K-Pop as its known) group BTS addressing the United Nations, describing the struggle to accept oneself. No, this is a lesson in how to use your words to keep the audience’s attention and focus on target while learning what will and will not please your boss , when not to “overcook it“ and how to not be “Naughty Naughty.“ If you still don’t know why you should learn what a “Comby” is and who “ Newton Meters” is then you are then you have got the perfect video ahead. Please Grab some Tea or maybe a set of ear defenders to plug in to your phone. Are you in for a treat! Plus the first time I have ever heard of ear plugs called "Ear Defenders" wrenches routinely called "Spanners" and countless other British slang words I should incorporate in to my own daily vernacular ASAP!

I picked up a 5 piece combo kit today as it was an excellent way to get into Bosch Blue. I have eight Bosch Green power tools that use the 18V Power4All which I love, but some of them run out of steam in some situations. The angle grinder especially, but I also had a need for a much more powerful drill to drive garden augers. Anyway, it seems that I did not properly appreciate what I was getting, and probably did not fully appreciate the tools I already own, because I have learned heaps from this video. For what it is worth, I also own a Bosch Blue corded angle grinder that gets lots of use, and that I love, and more recently I bought a Bosch 1600CE router with plunge and fixed bases, and that I _really_ love. It has had some seriously heavy use and barely got got warm. On the down side I have it table mounted using the fixed base, and that is not as successful as say, a Triton TRA001 which is a dream to use table mounted. I have also seen what looked like a reference to some of these tools working with an app via wireless or Bluetooth. If I have got that right, I had no idea they had that feature so I shall now try and track that down, or maybe even read the flipping manual ;-)

I bought a combo package recently with GDSR-190 & GDR 1400. All positive, from having a tool to drill pilot holes then the other has the bit needed for screwing, set & ready to go. Second, would be buying the combo gave me two batteries, plus the heavy duty canvas bag (way better than hard cases). Yes, they charge fast, but having two is better. 1st Bosch tools I have purchased & only cordless tools I own. After swearing I would never buy cordless again, just overall bad experiences. Only issue was the learning curve for the impact, broken cheap screws and over-tightening, takes a little getting used to. All good now and will be sticking with Bosch for my tools when and if I need to replace something.

Super video. Really well presented and very educational. Appreciate the comparison between impact driver and drill driver, use both for roofing and found no huge difference until the fasteners become larger.

Eric is always worth watching. But I don't see anyone getting hold of the one of the main benefits he mentioned: no reactive torque. If you've ever had an injury from reactive torque you'll understand how much that's worth. And how great it is not to have to fight all the time. Another thing is less cam-out on screws. The radial force seems to help keep the bit seated in the screw. Plus, all that power is intoxicating.

Yes, well, Makita are Japanese. I have a Japanese car and Japanese knives. Far superior.

And, also I have the GDX, combo machine. It's brilliant. Takes the nuts off the wheels of our cars, no problem.

Hi, great video, very informative, however, there is one relatively important detail that wasn't accurate. An impact driver impacts diagonally rather than horizontally as an impact wrench does. Hammer drill strikes vertically (like a hammer), impact wrench strikes horizontally (like turning a wrench {or spanner}), and finally an impact driver stikes horizontally yet, simultaneously creating a downward force, (hence diagonally forcing the fastener), much in the way we push downwards ,while simultaneously turning, a screw driver. Additionally if they were the "same" an impact driver would be named "1/4" hex drive impact wrench", the term "driver" is the key. Not ideal for nuts or metal work either, they ARE however ideal for lags and other wood working applications. Thanks for the video.

Use my drill and driver every day at work. Both have their place and Bosch make the best battery tools for tradesmen ( in my opinion)

What a brilliant demo. I just like the impact because its lighter, easier to handle and swap bits. But yeah, cheap bits and screws like the impact driver a lot less!
