How do you feel about using Varnish before enamels? Is it something you do everytime without fail or an unecessary step?

Never varnished. Learnt the hard way about using the right amount of pressure and not being too hard with the cotton bud. Plain sailing since then!

This was such a help thank you. I’ve had an issue when trying to use oil paints over my slap chopped minis but I’m realizing I was giving them 1-2 hours to cure. Probably not enough time. When using those Vallejo varnishes did the matte varnish go right through the air brush or does it need to be watered down?

I have found that if you are using contrast paint you probably should. I have found that the removal process take some normal paint off as well. I have had to go back into the models to highlight and or fix some of the edges.

Man I have had a year 2 year long Hiatus away from the hobby. I am a 25year experienced painter of all forms of miniatures. My prefered style for those years was GWs color lust early years. Straight up edge highlighting up to the finished box art. I was never happy with this method, as the box art never reflected the lore in my honest view. I rejoiced when Grim Dark became a proper thing. I was using dull tones and effect paints and dusts for the last 10 years and it just makes that GD feel now for me. But this Streakygrime has just pulled all those processes together! My favorite way of using it now is on my Forgeworld Primarch and hero models pieces. Not directly on those miniatures, but on the dead marines and ones they are busy slaughtering on their diorama bases. It works so well to have those astartes all covered in grime and battle damage only to be standing next to or fighting a god of the battlefield a primarch that has not a speck of dust on him. Really brings that pop to those character models. Thank you sir for introducing me to this marvelous stuff 👌

Curious, I have done this before ona few models, but is there a certain point that this enamel cannot be removed? i.e. can you let it sit on your model too long?

Thank you for sharing; If we apply a Gloss Varnish/Streaking Grime, and then wish to continue with Acrylic Painting, may we need to apply a Matt Varnish first? (i.e., will the Acrylic Paint adhere to the Gloss Varnish??). Your thoughts are welcomed.
@eater_of_garbage_

Yes, you need to seal the enamels in. Enamel and acrylic paints aren't miscible.

Streaking grime has a kind of grain in it, right? Doesn't that clog your airbrush when applying it? I've never even thought of applying it with an airbrush. I've used pencils mostly. What is the main advantage of applying it with an airbrush?

Perfect timing as my grime an rust has just arrived , question for anyone here , I’ve airbrushed a razorback would you use the streaking grime as a wash as opposed to a nuln ?
@SprayBlackStudios
@SprayBlackStudios 2 года назад
Streaking grime and Nuln oil are very different in terms of colour and finish but a good reductive wash works well on armour panels and won't give you the tide marking etc that acrylic washes will.

why was this channel abandoned one year ago?
@chikhai
@chikhai 2 года назад
Not allowing acrylics to cure properly is the biggest mistake people make when doing anything like this. Just because it looks dry, doesn't mean it is. The water has to evaporate completely out of the medium before its fully cured. If theres still any water in there, the acrylic hasn't properly bonded to whatever the paint has been applied to, and it can easily be lifted off with a bit of abrasion. A gloss varnish when using acrylic washes can help with the tea stain effect too, as the wash is more naturally pulled into the recesses instead of gathering on flat surfaces.
@SprayBlackStudios
@SprayBlackStudios 2 года назад
Very much agreed! I often find that as acrylics go to "touch dry" pretty quickly they assume that it has cured fully. I love using that gloss varnish technique with acrylic washes, really helps to break the surface tension! 👍
@chikhai
@chikhai 2 года назад
@@SprayBlackStudios Yup. I learned that technique from when I used to build Gunpla. It makes panel lines, vents etc an absolute doddle. Why make life hard for yourself when capillary action will do all the work for you?
