How do YOU feel about the album? And if you hate it, would you be willing to give it another chance all of these years later? Let me know that, and anything else that makes sense, in the comments below.
When I got this album in 98 I didn't hate it, but it was definitely weird experience. It was far removed for what I was specting from slayer at that time, as you sis a real rollercoaster. But at the end of the day is the most experimental album from their discography, and if this is Slayer being experimental it's really a good one for me. The "numetal" tracks stands the test of time IMO, this sounds more Slipknot than Korn I should say.
I didn't like it much when I first heard it , but it's growing on me. Point , Bitter Piece , Deaths Head , Screaming from the sky , Overt enemy are great tracks. Like screaming and scrum too. Stain of mind was the only overtly obvious flirtation of nu metal along with maybe desire and Tom's muzzled vocals on a few tunes. It's not an obvious sellout album like Danzig blackaciddevil.
Lots of GHUA hate in this comments section, which probably means some very good reasons for it. I skipped that album. Not entirely motivated to seek it out and give it a shot at present.
There's a lot to be said for when you come into a band. It can color your opinion a bit. At any rate, we all love what we love. Thanks for sharing your own view of the album.
We have opposite tastes in music I guess. DIM is one of the greatest metal albums ever I believe, maybe behind Megadeth rust in Peace. And what you said about Paul's drumming on Overt Enemy I think was absolutely some kind of complete refusal of deeply listening to the talent he has in that song.
Completely agree about Bostaph, but the real work of art for him here is Perversions of Pain. Fact of the matter is there's NOTHING Dave can do that Paul can't. Can't say the opposite is true.
That's because it IS a great album. All the people I know who hated it at the time because it wasn't "pure" Slayer, and have since taken the time to really listen to it, have formed an appreciation. I used to hear "It's NU-METAL!! And it's not even GOOD nu-metal!" Well, yeah, some of it IS nu-metal-ish (NOT all the songs), but they're wrong, it's freakin' GREAT nu-metal!
There was a lot of hate for this album by some when it came out. But the good tracks are awesome. Bitter Peace and Point are on my list of best songs they ever recorded. The rest are a mixed bag but still pretty good. The production is actually very good on this record however its not the right style for Slayer. They have always recorded Jeff Left, Kerry Right for the most part. This is recorded with a lot of overdubs and down the middle tracks and its just over produced for the sound we expect from Slayer.
For something that's not "the sound we expect" from a band, this album is probably the best ever done. I can think of MANY albums that were not "the sound we expect" from a band, they're 99% trash. If I'm looking at this vs Risk from Megadeth or Lou Lou, I'm taking Diabolus all freakin day long.
Fraid I gotta dissagree, this album sounds Slayer as fuck. Although it is the bridge from their original style, into their more industrial / nu metal sound. People always have a Problem when a band first deviates from their signature, although people seemed to embrace the influence for all albums later, especially God Hates us All. It's actually remarkable that they evolved their style in a way that still sounds very thrash, and retains thr identity of the band. A lesser band would have left their roots behind entirely, where Slayer just incorporated new influences
Great take. I think they did abandon some of the things they tried on this album. i mean, they never even play any of these songs in concert anymore, it's like they've turned their backs on it - CRIMINAL! If they launched into Screaming from the Sky while I was there live, I'd go just as nuts as I do for Dead Skin Mask.
I was into this album when it first came out, don’t listen to it much now. The tour cycle was the first 2 or 3 times I saw Slayer live. Point is the best track on the album, absolute banger. Since you mentioned Undisputed Attitude, I must say I love it and have a copy of the double 10” version. The new original track Gemini was really awful though.
Idc but hope not. One of the best SLAYEEERRRRRR album imo. Btw im gonna sub. Ps. So you like it or not? Btw no crap songs on this album. Ps2: i watched till the end. Btw still sub
Despite the continuing rabidity of their modern fanbase, it's interesting how so many others find fault with so much of their album filler. Maybe a bit of resting on their laurels here?
i think it is Slayers most underrated album i love it, it's not their best imo but far far from the worst although it was the last good album Slayer released (i haven't heard the last one, Repentless)
I've heard Repentless but really haven't revisited it since it came out. Don't remember it being bad, but also not entirely motivated to rush into that revisit it, either. Thanks for the comment.
I hate that people call this the Nu metal album. You describe it much better, as them trying to be experimental with techniques of the time. If anything they tried some new stuff, it didn’t work and moved on. Maybe it’s time i try to relisten to what I believe is their worst album, World Painted Blood.
Well, it's good someone is buying those albums. LOL. Seriously, though, I know what it's like to dig a whole band discography that contains a few unpopular albums. And yes, I'm talking about KISS.
I love this album. I feel you’ve glazed past the lyrical content here. Finally Tom and Jeff get to write together and we get some really profound lyrics. Most of the tracks seem to be completely war driven, with the psychosis of infantry men and bomber pilots pushed to the front. I believe it hold up as a great sidebar to the talents of this great band.
Pretty much feel the same, I don't hate it nor I love it. Bitter Peace is one of my favorite Slayer songs because of the fantastic intro. I do like this album way more than God Hates us All. I hate that album.
These two albums seem to travel together when folks discuss less than loved Slayer albums. GHUA was a record I skipped entirely. Maybe one day, I'll trudge through it. One day.
Saw this tour back in, I think, 1991 and bought the shirt at the show. Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, and Alice In Chains. It would have been Death Angel instead of AIC but that's when the band got in the bus accident and their drummer was laid up for a whole year. Amazing show. Can't believe I once again fit in that damn shirt.
Not a Slayer album I am that familiar with, I only picked it up fairly recently (last 2 years) on CD and have yet to dive in too deeply. I don't remember hating it though.
There are a few blank spots in my Slayer memory between Seasons and Repentless, and I'm sure there will be a little more of this sound in at least one more of those unfamiliar records. One day, I'll look into those. Bur right now I have WAY too many other bands and albums on my to-get list. You know what that's like.
i love the album even if it's quite different from the other slayer albums but i cant listen to either god hates us all or christ illusion, they are so fucking boring i might give repentless a chance but my expectations is not very high
There are a couple of good songs on the album, but also a lot of trash. I dont care for this album. If I'm listening to Slayer, its not going go be this album. Their best days were long over by this point.
