Do Magnets Damage Your Sewing Machine? |Abi’s Den ✂️🧵🌸

Can Magnets really damage your sewing machine - well, maybe if they were built with hard drives which still used magnetic strips like the old VHS and Beta tapes, but, the computer chip changed all that, and with the SSD's inside the more advanced machines - I will demonstrate on a £3000 machine ! Magnetic Seam Guides are useful tools to help achieve great sewing, but will they damage your machine, UsB flash drive or dongle?
Prym amzn.to/2NWnOFo
Hemline amzn.to/2Oi6zxe
Consider the old floppy discs, vhs, and magnetic strips on old credit cards (before the introduction of microchips) which can be wiped clean, and very strong magnets (something big enough to lift a car bonnet) sat directly on a hard drive on a computer hard drive may wipe it clean, but even then it's not always the case. The magnet has to be very strong and even then it needs to sit exactly in the right spot to cause damage your computer.
The sewing machine doesn’t have a hard drive inside it. There are no moving parts, just like in a usb stick. The same fear is for usb sticks and flash drives, dongles etc. Which cannot be damaged by a magnet because there simply isn’t anything for the magnetic force to attract away from the memory.
Another myth, it doesn’t wear over time, it’s immediate. If it’s going to damage it, it’ll do it instantly... but it won’t... you’re safe, go and enjoy sewing those straight lines x

Thank you for this explaining. I struggled a long time about deciding to buy one or not, because other people told me I shouldn´t. But I always thought it was a good invention. Thank you, I will go and buy one now immediately ! Greetings from South Bavaria

Thank you for that great demonstration and information. That particular statement is often heard in the sewing/craft rooms whenever a "new" member dares to produce her magnetic seam guide.

Don’t be. The companies making the machines have made various magnetic accessories for their machines, so it goes to show, it’s all scaremongery

I have that same problem with my phone - my case has a magnetic closure on the back for a wallet (only holds about 3 cards). So I’m forever deactivating hotel and gift cards - although not credit cards especially now that they’ve gone to the chips. I also use pretty strong magnets for closures for the book sleeves I make, and never had any problems other than it’s hard to enclose them in ripstop because they want to stick to the throatplate pretty strongly! 😂 I’ve long wanted to try a magnetic seam gauge - now I will!

In my experience the bobbin or the bobbin case (or both) got sort of misaligned, which I could clearly see on the seem as I was sewing, - all fine when I took the magnet away again. Maybe the magnet was too strong, but then again, if it wasn´t strong enough, the magnet would have been moving just as you said. I suspect even the tension discs could be affected if you weren´t careful not getting the magnet near them. You are of course absolutely right about it not affecting the computerized parts, thanks for the video and your great channel! :)
@AbisDen
@AbisDen Год назад
No part of the machine will be affected by the magnet. It does depend on your machine but if you’ve found it misaligned the bobbin then I’d be concerned about the quality of your machine (state of repair) , if it’s front loading then there’s absolutely no way this could have happened. If it’s top loading, there’s hardly any metal in the bobbin case so I’d be concerned. In both cases, the bobbin case sits in the machine snugly. They have to or they won’t work let alone sew. Tension discs? Tension discs again, the magnet goes no where near the spring and if it takes a magnet to alter it, again I can’t get my head around how, but the spring is not the right one for your machine. There aren’t any machines with a low enough quality spring for it to be affected. Springs twirl with a magnet but you would have to position the magnet a certain way. Physics! Am I right? Which machine are you using?

Well, I once used used a magnetic pin cushion next to my computerized machine, because I forgot to be careful. And left it there for several months. Next time I tried to turn it on, the computer screen was blank! I totally panicked! After I calmed down, I just let it set for several weeks, hoping against hope. Next time I turned it on, the screen was very faint, but was improved. After several months of resting, the computer screen was restored full strength and the machine worked fine after that, but I kept the magnets away! For the record, it was an older model, but VERY expensive Janome. So I don’t know if newer technology has improved things or not. But I would recommend that if you’re going to be daring and use a magnet near your machine, don’t leave it there when not in use; take it far away, just to be on the safe side.
@AbisDen
@AbisDen 4 года назад
Susan Mei Out of interest is it the 8000, 9000 model? Lots of older Janome and brothers LCD screens failed, nothing to do with magnets, just old technology. The Brother PE 150-190s (D) had similar issues
@susanmei9980
@susanmei9980 4 года назад
Abi's Den, it is the Memory Craft 7000. And once I got the magnet away from it and it recovered, I never had a problem with it again, and that was ten years ago.
@AbisDen
@AbisDen 4 года назад
Susan Mei unfortunately, I know what you’re saying but in your case, it was pure coincidental, those models have had the same issue with LCD, the magnet didn’t have a part to play in it.
@susanmei9980
@susanmei9980 4 года назад
Abi's Den, because I told you it was a Janome and you DIDN’T guess the model. All I’m saying is people should be careful. And since I never had another problem with it, I wouldn’t say it was “intermittent.” Sure, it could have been coincidence, but I think it would have happened again, if that were the case. I didn’t set out to start an argument. I actually said that maybe older machines were susceptible to magnet damage and maybe the newer ones aren’t. Since no one has done a study on these older machines, and magnetic pin cushions and things have been around for at least 40 years, no one can be sure THAT is not what caused those other Janome and Brother machines to act up. Maybe other users left their magnets next to the machine, and the result was a problem; who’s to say? I know you want to be an expert, but we can’t all know everything about every circumstance. It’s just not possible. I appreciate your video and the effort you put into it.
@AbisDen
@AbisDen 4 года назад
Susan Mei but yours is an even OLDER model with even more likely chance of being damaged and your sewing machine has a notorious reputation amongst mechanics for screen failures. the whole point of studying science is so we know, that’s how we create these things. I’ve owned 2 8000’s and a 9000 and quite a few brother 150-190’s. It’s my job to know this, truly, yours was not affected by the magnet. If it was it would have been erased, wiped clean, never to be returned, yours recovered, but that’s because it is a completely different issue

I just thought, try another magnet, the attraction on the magnet you have may be polarised in a different angle, the seam guides my students use, some work on their machine, others don’t, same brands same type of magnet.

Magnetic hoops especially the bigger hoops are 100 times stronger and I wonder if they are safe on the big oabel innovis or dream machines.
