Makes sense! With my screen mounted on a wall, it does vibrate a bit as well. Only time I have noticed any sort of distortion from vibration is when it's cranked loud enough to vibrate my ceiling/projector. Image distorts a bit, but that's really only during some spirited demos haha

Youthman, your videos are awesome & helping me on my theater build. My room & screen size is the same as yours. The back row will have a 12 to 15 inch riser. My question is what height is the bottom of your actual screen,not the border. I don’t want to get the screen too heigh or too low. Thanks for your videos.

I like your take on this. I did a bit of installing professionally many years ago and one of my first and favorite installs was an acoustically transparent screen. All the front channels were in walls as well as an in-wall dual 8-inch sub. Another dual 8-inch sub was placed in the rear of the room. It sounded amazing and I didn’t notice picture problems. I was curious if something this size would cause a problem, thanks for answering my question. I think you’re right. It’s the same reason why if you have a projector in the back of the room you can’t tell if there’s a little imperfection in your screen as much as if you were using a short-throw projector where the light is coming up at an angle. Directly on it’s more forgiving.

I noticed that yours and most of your people that you interview have their subwoofers in the front of the theaters. Is this due to room size, or no room behind the rear seats? Or from your experience, has it been noted that there is better performance for subs being placed in the front of the room? Last question/recommendation - I am planning the purchase the Def Tech 6080 series LCR all with active subwoofers built in and I wanted two PB13s for the rear area of my theater. The question is, should I go with my thought of the PB13s in the rear or place them up front with the Def Techs? Thank you for your time and very informative videos. Respectfully, Preston

How come you decided to get the sealed JTR's instead of ported? Was it mainly due to screen movement? I was told ported subs hit harder. Any advice you can provide as I'm trying to decide between the ported vs. sealed subwoofers.
@Youthman
@Youthman 4 года назад
Ported typically provides more output but I certainly do not need any more output with (4) 18’s 😂. I get less screen movement, tons of clean output, flat down to 10Hz and the tight response you get from sealed subs. When I had the dual SVS SB16’s in for review, they did not provide enough output but that’s only two 15.5” driver’s vs (4) 18’s with much larger amps and cabinets.

Mark I’m using a 2.35:1 screen and it is really good for watching movies since there is no black bars image would be immersive for sure. But when it comes to watching series or playing games image size will be considerably small. I use to play PS4 a lot definitely I miss 16:9 screen.. it depends on your interest and use in my opinion.

I keep watching your videos and wondering how I can take over my whole basement as the home theater. Remove exercise equipment, the kids drum set and wife’s stuff. Then I would have the 12 foot wide screen and massive subs. But they won’t fit into the studio apartment I will move into and alimony payments after I install it all. So I will continue to watch your various videos and imagine the possibilities. Keep up the great content!

Always a treat seeing these, congrats on 50K again, man! Hopefully that number continues to grow exponentially! And yes, one thing I'd remind people is you're a lot more likely to notice your projector 2cm than your screen shaking 6cm, it's all based on the impact to the image source. You're casting TO the screen, you're casting FROM the projector. Shine a flashlight on something and shake it, the amount that it's lit and the focus of the beam hardly changes, even with rather aggressive movement. Now fix the object still and go shake the flashlight.

As long as the projector light is more or less in front of your screen you will probably never see any differences. But if your using an UST projector it is another story! The light from „underneath“ will cause shadows and interferences when your screen is shaking. That´s why you can not buy an transparent „UST-Screen“ yet. This problem is not solved yet! could it be that your eye balls are moving in and out at the same rate as your screen is, so you cant't tell if the screen is moving due to the fact that there moving at the same rate and distance because of the sub woofer excursion pressures. you know in and out. just asking.

@Youthman

JTR and PSA have been the most impressive so far. The JTR 4000ULF is a beast and can handle really large rooms. Tony was running a pair in his massive home theater and it was incredible. My room isn't nearly as large so (4) sealed 18's provide more than enough output for my setup.

@Youthman
@Youthman 4 года назад
The only moving of the subs was we tried rotating them different directions and tried different distances from my front wall (not much room to adjust but a few inches). We found facing them towards the side walls provided the best frequency response. Not major, but enough to leave them facing sideways.

Great video! So I’m designing my theater room now. I’ve got some very large ported devastator subs, 21”. Debating on putting the subs behind the AT screen, and positioning them so the ports face off the right and left of the screen, or come out below the screen. Thoughts?
@Youthman
@Youthman 4 года назад
Definitely not a bad idea. Some guys has recommended putting something in front of the PB16's when I had them to deflect the air away from the screen but I never tried it.
@jayflicek2
@jayflicek2 2 года назад
You mention that you rotated your subwoofers 90 degrees so they are facing towards the outside of the wall and have been happy with performance. I currently have this setup with dual HSU VTF-15 MK2s. The subs wit between the L/C and C/R speakers (THX 6000s), facing outward towards the outside wall. I have them facing outwards not because of vibration, but because it's the only way they fit behind the screen. That said, the bass in the room is underwhelming and I always thought it was because I didn't have them firing outward. Do you have any suggestions for me? Potentially upgrading to the JTR's or maybe its simply a tuning issue - I've only ever used the Denon Audyssey correction. I know finding an ideal setup is a journey, but advice on where to go next would be greatly appreciated!
@Youthman
@Youthman 2 года назад
Hey Jay the best thing you can do is to pick up a calibration microphone and use REW to measure your subwoofers to see what kind of frequency response you’re getting in your room. Buying a different subwoofer is not going to fix that if you have an issue there
@Youthman

And if you have multiple subwoofers, it might be beneficial to use a Mini DSP 2 x 4 HD to dial them in

I'll have to try this "bass drop" in our main listening room with EAW KF810P line arrays and dual Danley TH221 subs powered by Powersoft K20s (60kW limited to 30kW due to service constraints). The opening scene in the movie "Lucy" pounds so hard that text on the screen looks like rippling water and that's due to eyeball movement. It's also impossible to swallow when this happens. FOH SPL at 23Hz is 146dB! :-)
@Youthman
@Youthman 4 года назад
Wow, Danley subs are the real deal. I have always been impressed with their output. If I remember correctly, they don't dig very deep though.
@cpufrost
@cpufrost 4 года назад
@@Youthman Yes for most (pro) stuff the cutoff is typically 30Hz for live performances. TH221 is a different beast and designed for theater and impact. Outside response (no room gain) it starts falling off below 20Hz. With room gain a pair is quite usable to 15Hz and lower. Even 20dB down from 147 is 127dB (13Hz) and is still quite usable in the room which is about 1900 square feet. One of these boxes can cover six times that. At 30Hz it's so strong that it really torques your body, joints, and becomes painful. A wooden framed house is a no no with this. Outdoor testing was fun, we had two coupled and pointed at a tree line over 100 yards distant and set the amps to about -5dB and hit the bass kick drum on my Octapad which has a sharp midbass snap with a nice 28Hz undertone. It was about an hour after a thunderstorm rolled through and everything was wet. It sounded like it was raining again because the wavefront shook all that water off the leaves! That was cool! Testing subs outside is cool, if you have the space (or neighbors that don't give a shit!) try it! Bass echos from buildings blocks away sound amazing. At 60Hz it sounds like a power station blowing up in the distance.
@chairman72
@chairman72 3 года назад
Youthman, thanks again for another informative video. I have a question for you about screen movement. How far in front of your speakers do you need to place your AT screen to avoid the subs moving the screen at all? (You stated that the small amount of movement is almost undetectable in the dark but since I am designing from the ground up I thought I could just plan for it.)
@Youthman

With my (4) 18’s, I could place them at the back of my room and they would still cause the screen to shake.

@@Youthman Ahh well that’s a good point. Thanks.
@marcosvictor4935
@marcosvictor4935 4 года назад
Optically speaking, that's probably not a problem because you have a conventional Projector put far away from the screen and the depht of field is clearly bigger than how much your screen is moving. IF you had a short-throw proejctor that would certainly be a problem, because the depht of field from those lens are veeeery narrow, because of the close focusing distance, so you need to be very precise with the focus and any movement will screw that up, that's very clear when you try to project into a wall with a shor throw projector, often times the image will not be enterelly in focos because the wall isn't perfectly straight, and that small amount of warping in the wall is enough to cause that.

No because bass frequencies are Omni directional unlike midrange and high frequencies. Think about subwoofers in car setups. Very few are facing towards the front of the car. Sometimes they face the rear of the car, sometimes facing up towards the roof while other systems have them facing each other.

Hey YouthMan! Can you do a quick assist for me? I have a new Aventage 3080 receiver and 2 Klipsch R112 W subwoofers for my home theater. I want to use both of them but have been unable to do so with the WA-2 wireless subwoofer kits. Can you help? Please!!! Thanks

Just curious, what acoustic screen do you use, and can you see the pattern on it from your front row? I assume you probably sit about 11-12 feet away from the screen?
@Youthman
@Youthman 4 года назад
I used Seymour Center Stage XD fabric, I’m 9’ viewing distance from the front row and I am not able to see the weave from that distance. Someone with better vision might be able to.

This type of screen probably costs a lot for big home theaters due to the fact that usually a piece of fabric in front of a tweeter attenuate or covers a little bit treble which modify the frequency response. So making a transparent sounding screen is a challenge .
@Youthman
@Youthman 4 года назад
The fabric for my Seymour screen cost $360 for 150” diagonal. Audyssey easily adjusts for the very small attenuation on the top end that the AT screen effects.

Thanks Scott. Part of it is I just don’t have a lot of available space as my room is 13’ x 19’ and 4’ of the 19’ is the front cabinet. Most it’s aesthetics. It took some tweaking with MiniDSP but I now have them flat down to 10Hz. Check out this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_ZxbM_s4vh0.html

I made this video when I had the RSW-15's - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VtLw9a1ey6s.html but for that video, you will notice in the demo, the lights were turned off. Man, I dig bass as much as the next guy and have two very powerful subs but one of my issues with truly powerful subs is that even when they are dialed down properly I get bass fatigue after a long action movie. They are so powerful that even low volume it’s easy to underestimate their power . Rock on

Thanks Doug. Have you tried using a miniDSP? You might have some peaks in your frequency response that is causing the fatigue.

Youthman have you climbed a ladder and checked several areas of your ceiling by pushing up on the sheetrock to see if your ceiling is starting to pull loose. I have a 10inch sub and yeah its not as big as what you are using but the room is small I have been having issues with the furniture and other items shaking and rattling. I am making adjustments for that to reign that in and to let the new towers sing a little more on their own. I had the sub do more in the past to help the now given away r 51m bookshelves. I think my issue is bigger than yours though because my tv and audio equipment are in a glass entertainment center and that glass rattling drives me nuts. Also the boom really gets in the way of some music. Sigh the adjustments never end.
