You can just use two pickups and put them top to top - if they attract, they are opposite polarities. If they repel they are the same polarity. The bottoms will be the opposite of the tops.

Good stuff!!! Regarding pickups output balance, the bridge pickup sees far less amplitude in string vibration, than the neck, so bridge pickups need to be hotter to compensate.

Picked up a really nice Tobacco Sunburst MiM Strat used the other day for a very good price with the intent of doing mods just for the fun of doing mods! It plays fine, but this gives me a project and a place to learn. This guy, Phillip McKnight has to be about the most generous, helpful man I've encountered on the internet with the possible exception of Chef John from Food Wishes! I'm going to hotrod the pickups in this guitar just because, but I now know and understand a little more thanks to Phil. Don't you wish more people were like this? Thank You Phil! It's nice of you to do stuff like this.

This was the most technical guitar info about pickups packed into 8 minutes than I've ever seen. I've always used a simple, liquid filled pocket compass to check my pickups polarity, but that little straw stick with the white/black magnet in it is pretty cool.
@fer_fdi
@fer_fdi 5 лет назад
inductance tells more about the expected tone out of a pickup. You need a multimeter capable of measuring inductance (mH) Then, if you measure both resistance and inductance (and take in to account other aspects too) you can accumulate info that will help develop an intuition about the tone of a PUp from data.

Phillip, been watching your videos for a long time now. playing and messing with guitar builds for over 35 years... After watching this video I threw the meter one of my Charvel guitars (using the meter and 1/4" cable method) I was blown away to discover that all this time I had the neck and bridge pickups swapped! Guitar sounds great but man I feel stupid. Thanks for all you do!

Hi Phil. This is a really interesting and informative video. I asked Dave Burrluck at Guitarist magazine the question about why a bridge pickup is higher output. It’s basically down to the fact that there’s less physical vibration nearer to the bridge, so it needs a higher output to balance the sound out!
@TexanUSMC8089

Higher output doesn't always mean better sound. That's what we have amps for. LOL Great video. Thanks.

thanks, i was actually wondering... I can't seem to get my head around, I checked everything on my guitar which all of the sudden is sounding like the volume is at 1/10 and only wrong thing is that the pickups don't measure the right values (compared them to a similar working guitar).. Are both my pickups done for?

I noted the "wrong" wire position on a 59' i was putting in the neck of a les paul style charvel. but, i bought the pickup used as an impulse buy, and it didn't have enough wire to make it the right way (screw magnets towards the neck). so i tried it out backwards anyway. i actually really love the clean sound! very unique and warm when playing both pickups. the bridge is a Dimebucker. It's a bit noisy, but that has more to do with me crappily splicing the (also too short) dimebucker wire, i'm pretty sure.
@stankfanger1366
@stankfanger1366 5 лет назад
Anytime I have to extend a wire like that, I always use a good quality $2 wire nut on it. Make sure you have enough exposed and the connection is 100%. If it reads 14.2 before on the original wire, it won't even vary to 14.1 after you use the wire nut and give it the other six inches to get to the cavity. It's less messy and unreliable than electrical tape, easier to undo and redo, and doesn't degrade over time like tape does.
@slavesforging5361
@slavesforging5361 5 лет назад
@@stankfanger1366 Good idea, I'll try that. i forgot wire nuts existed! i definitely need to start stocking up on general electrical supplies if i'm gonna keep doing my own work, which i enjoy doing. I'll add those to my inventory. Thanks for the suggestion!

Great thanks. Inductance is a big factor in output, the magnet strength in Henries. Some MMs have resistance and inductance.
@midi510
@midi510 5 лет назад
The neck pickup doesn't need to be as strong because the strings vibrate more vigorously in the middle (more deflection) and induce more current in the pickup. It's like plucking the string softly versus aggressively. Near the bridge, the strings don't move as much.
