🇩🇰 This video is for anyone who is thinking about moving to Copenhagen. We LOVE living in Copenhagen - but we aren't every person, and there are some cautionary tales to share.
In this video we try to answer a lot of the questions that we get from people who are thinking about moving to Copenhagen and living in Denmark. We try to share the good and the bad to paint a realistic picture of what life in Copenhagen is like.
Living in Denmark as a foreigner has all kinds of benefits and challenges and they seem to be magnified in Copenhagen. Let us know what you think, and if this sparks even more questions, we hope to answer them in upcoming videos.

A thing about being international in Denmark … while danes tend to be very cut off ish with adding new friends … we are all also very much “in love with ourselves” in the context of living in the most awesome country in the world. If we then see someone making an effort to assimilate to being danish - volonteering in local sportsclubs, parental groups, organising stuff for their community, taking danish lessons … you know … noticing when you do go that extra mile, we are more open to “letting you in” to our circle of friends. But like you said … most of us have friends dating back to childhood. Due to the social structures in our society. Our friends and us goes wayyyyy back. So show us you want it … and you will open doors more easily.

I guess it is, because we put something deeper into the words friend and friendships - we don't just call people "friends" after a 5 minutes social acquaintance, as you seem to do in some cultures - it takes time for real friendships to develop here.

It's so weird that people talk about being stressed in Copenhagen. Everything is basically closed after 6 pm. It's a lot quieter than other European capitals. I recognize that weekends are different and more lively but still, How noise and stress are probably just different for everyone.

Thanks for the support. Right now we couldn’t do a whole video in Danish, only a short maybe (Derek has done one short in Danish). We’re a little self conscious and don’t want to be laughed at and when we say Danish names for example, we get trolled and don’t want to go through that.
@SunkenCathedral
@SunkenCathedral Год назад
I don't know why some commenters keep pushing them to do this. The videos are meant for foreigners in Denmark and people who otherwise want to learn about the country. That's the intended audience (I think). So if a video was in Danish, we wouldn't understand it and it wouldn't be so helpful...
@mvoetmann1
@mvoetmann1 Год назад
Please don't. It is nice that you know a bit of danish. I am sure that it makes your lives much easier. But listening to foreigners attempting the language quickly becomes painful. Sorry. As for your audience, they all understand your erudite and wellformed English. Few will appreciate your comparatively limited Danish.
@SuiGenerisAbbie
@SuiGenerisAbbie Год назад
@@RobeTrotting Guys, there will always be people who will laugh at you. People are jerks. Sad but true. I am not supporting them at all. But, I am supporting your soldiering on and really speaking more Danish, since you have lived there for a long time, now. I speak horrible French and Polish. People gather around me in a circle (a damn circle) to laugh at me, but, one has to carry on. That is the only way to learn a language is to keep trying. My French teacher always said: Soyez sage, car il faut essayer which basically means Be good because you must try. He never tolerated English being spoken in the classroom! I cannot emphasise enough learning to speak the language of the foreign country wherein you find yourselves. Even if people speak English with alarming fluency over there, learning Danish will earn you the highest "Brownie Points" you can accrue, trust. Even learning to speak as little Polish as I know, BADLY, gets me shocked looks and this: "Wow!!!!!!!" Really, people are so impressed and pleased that you will learn even a little of what is SO near and SO dear to them.

You should just tell us that you would like to speak Danish to us to practice it more. Danish people are really just trying to be polite and helpful - and perhaps taking the chance to practice their English skills a bit 😉 - , knowing that most foreigners typically know only very little Danish, since Danish is a small and peculiar language, so they don't really expect you to be interested in learning Danish for real and are therefore a bit taken by surprise, when you actually are 😊

That point about customer service is so true.. I've worked as a sales assistant for almost 10 years, and it was the strangest thing... One of the things I got a lot of practice at, was profiling the customer personalities... Sometimes, just walking by and doing the customary 'Welcome! Let me know if you need anything!' could scare off a customer.. Especially Copenhagen natives, where it became almost an artform to be nearby and available, but all not intrusive and sort of occupied looking, so that the customer knew where you were in case they needed help, but didn't feel watched or pressured by your presence... Customers from Jylland however, would sometimes almost get insulted if I wasn't there to greet them immediately as they entered the shop... And then, of course, there was the weird hybrid, who expected the level of attention and active presence like someone from Jylland, but also the same lack of intrusion as a Copenhagener, and then usually also expected you to be able to read their mind and react to unexpressed expectations... Customer service is a mixed bag...😂

Out here about 1½ hour away by car or train, you get a lot of apartment or house for a reasonable amount of money. :D So even with a job in Copenhagen, it might just be an idea to commute. The last sentence in that comment is just wrong. There is absolutly no reason it is easier to get friends in a big city like CPH then in a small city. I would even say the other way around. It's easier to get into the community in small citys, helping out at city partys, become a member of a sports activity and other stuff will integrate you so fast into a small citys culture and friendcirkle.

Of you think of colleagues as "competition" then of course you're not gonna be friends with them. It is definitely possible to become friends with people you work with, in fact it even happens that people who work together becomes more than friends. However as with most things in life, nothing is given so mileage does vary.
@eidodk

@@bzdtemp Ofcourse it happens that people who work together becomes "more than friends". There's however a GOOD reason why most danish companies have strict fraternisation rules. As in do not get your nookie where you work, it'll get you fired. You don't do number two where you eat either. It DOES happen, that you meet long life friends at your workplace, but that's DEFINATELY the odd one out. You don't know how long you're going to stay at any company so the people AT these companies are acquaintances, while your friends will be people you meet at spare time activities.

@@eidodk I must question you're " DEFINATELY the odd one out" since my experience is rather different, maybe it depends on the places you've worked or something. After living in Denmark for five years and not having Danish friends only mixed friends you probably only speak English with them so wonder why your Danish is bad . You are right that most Danes speak English really well but they prefer to speak Danish when they are together with there friends so if they are a group and everyone is forced to speak English you will get problems in the long term, Danish is not that hard a language to learn if you want, I find it interesting that most people from other English talking countries actually speaks desent Danish after a couple of years but I still have to meet an American who do but why? What I don't like to hear is that you guys tell other who look at your videos that it's much easier to speak English since most Danes speak English... I find that pretty disrespekting to the country and arrogant you do know that we are not US and people moving to US are expected to speak English from day one so come on guys.
