The "doesn't smile at you on the sidewalk" must be a big city thing. Here in Jutland we smile and greet eachother when we pass. It might just be the small town etiquette😊

It definitely is. I have family in Aabenraa, and the last time I went there, pretty much everyone smiled at me. It never happens to me in Copenhagen

We do it on Fyn as-well. Not Odense, Nyborg etc.but I live in a village about 11 km west of Odense. Having grown up and lived in Odense, as-well as Aalborg and Aarhus, that was a massive culture shock 😂

I think it's definitely a Copenhagen thing - only because we didn't find that visiting elsewhere in DK and we have lived in bigger and similar-sized cities and didn't find that in Houston, Philadelphia, Chester (UK) or Geneva.

Hi Trotters. I have noticed over many of your excellent videos that your advises and statement are heavily Copenhagen dependent. Lots of things, that goes for CPH, isn't necessary a fact in other parts of the country. As an example, where I live (7000 people) we greet people when we meet them in the small streets. God dag, hej eller hvad man nu siger, and a little smile helps. I do know why, but that's another story. I think you should emphasize, that your knowledge goes for CPH only. There really is a difference between CPH and the rest of the country. And BTW, Danes are very helpful (even in Copenhagen). Many years ago, my sister moved to CPH from Aalborg. She was starting a new job. The day before, she biked the route to her job, so she was sure to be on time (before GPS and mobilphones). Next, on her way to the new job, she got lost!!! She pulled into a bus stop, only one young man was there. She asked if he knew the way, but he didn't. He said he would fetch a Krak map, every household in CPH had that map. He ran to a high rise and minutes later he came back with the map. My sister said I sorry, but I think you just missed your bus, Doesn't matter, he answered. They talked a little, and she found out he lived on the 4th floor in the high-rise. That's what I call helpful. Don't be afraid to ask. Keep up the good work.

Very true for pedestrian interaction in Nordjylland, though I used to hate the avis junk mail with adverts and contrived small town stories and mercantile announcements, everyone having a chance at 15 minutes of fame.

I believe that the changing of the seasons is an essential part of Danish mentality, Even though you can neither rely on snow in winter nor a heatwave in summer, the annual rhythm of the seasons is ever present. But I also think, for most Danes, the descent from bright summer nights into the darkness of winter feels way longer than any other season, as described by the late and great poet Henrik Nordbrandt in his short poem "The year has 16 months" (1986): Året har 16 måneder: November december, januar, februar, marts, april maj, juni, juli, august, september oktober, november, november, november, november.

And I am actually glad that your biggest challenges are the weather and the language. And it is true what you say about these things. The language however is a thing where you will impress danes if you try and make an effort to learn. We know its difficult....we hear it ALL THE TIME. Great video again. Basically I agree with you. Rain, wind, cold, warmth are not a seasonal thing in Denmark. It is a daily thing. I dont agree on that conversations with stranger, for instance in a Supermaked, is a no go. But if you talk to strangers make it funny. Also Danes are very helpful. So you can ask like "Please I am new here. Where can I find sugar?". The Dane will escort all the way to the shell holding the sugar. And perhaps even initiate smalltalk ;) Learning Danish is like: Ja, nej, skål og hej. Rest is done in English. Finally I noticed that the AI showing your talks in the subtitles thinks Skat is Scat. I dont know. Some truth to it I guess

U can show up unannounced if it's close friends or family. do not expect them to have time though u will usually only do this if let's say u live close and u knock and check if they have time or let's say you're around anyways and like have other plans but have some time on your hands it's okay to go ask if u can come say hello for a bit like me and my dad were going on a trip to Jylland and we came by our grandparents on the way and checked if they were busy or not and they invited us in for some coffee

With the weather today, and April coming up: "wear just enough clothes to fit the weather right at the time you leave home... No need to check the weather forecast, sun is shining, it's a beautiful morning, weather only gets better throughout the day!"... Famous last words. And: "if the weather is bad, an umbrella should be plenty to keep you dry and comfortable. Bicycling with an umbrella is, anyway, just a matter of practice." As a native Dane I love this video. After also living abroad you just hit on all the quirks we have as danes. Still laughing. For meeting danes you have to have a hobby or a sport and go to one of the several clubs as Denmark is a country of "foreninger".

Of all the advice. The one I feel like commenting on is the very last one. I actually think most Copenhageners love when people have to courage to wear colorful clothes or have funky hairstyles, but we will be looking at you in our black trenchcoats or insulated army green jackets.

One of the unfortunate details of social media in general is that all posts are weighted equally, regardless of whether they are statements by a person who knows absolutely nothing about the subject or a person who is an expert in the field. Statements from the one with the deep insight tend to be drowned in all sorts of guesswork from people who don't know very much.

On 'wet' days, shoes off. But sunny summer days and especially if it's at family/good friends, you will likely hear a "bare behold skoene på", even in Copenhagen. (For the non-danish speaking - "just keep the shoes on")

Read Emma Gad, It will tell you everything you need to know about when visiting a Dane. The rule is: On time or until 15 mins after. Why? you ask. Because the host has prepared for you to arrive on time, if you come early then the host might not be ready and can therefore not give you your best experience, if your late you might ruin the hosts preparations.

9:40 this is something that really started to change with the mobile phone, before that time it wasn't uncommon for people to drop in, the smartphone changed that up. We also seem to be busier, so if you want more than 20 min. for people's time, you need to plan at least a few days ahead.

It's actually refreshing to me to hear that In denmark striking up conversations with random people isn't normal. Where I live that's very normal. And I actually feel like the rude one when I don't passionately forfeit my free time to entertain their conversation. Sounds like denmark is the more respectful of the two in that fashion. Also the personal space, omg, probably one of my biggest frustrations with where I'm at. People walk right up behind you in line and are less than 12 inches from you. Sometimes even just bump right into you. It's actually crazy.

as an out going dane, who actually do start conversations on trains with strangers, and do compliment strangers on the street, it is all about sincerity. Only very rarely does a stranger not light up and smile over a sincere compliment. :)

True.....I really want to escape from November until March. But living here I know the routines to get through. And remember to look whenever you cross a bike lane...like getting out of a car or a bus. Copenhagen and other cities are often used as a place to go "mining for bikes" it was easy for East European gangs.

People who think that bike lanes are sidewalks, are REALLY grinding my gears. Seriously don't do that. It makes you come off as an entitled person who thinks they own everything. If there is a bike lane, chances are that there is a perfectly good sidewalk, right next to it. USE IT!

These videos about contrasting pro and cons of living anywhere are helpful, regardless of how they are meant. I love all of them, wherever I see them! 1) Seattle has a good biking infrasctructure. IF I am walking in our bike lanes, everyone yells out, "On your ----- (left or right)!" No one would dare run you over. 2) I always ask people to PLEASE WEAR headphones when they are listening to music on whatever. I really do not want to hear anyone else's stuff. Their tastes are not mine. Mine are not theirs. 3) I am one of those people who does not make much small talk to people I do not know. Here on YT, I am quite chatty and querying / almost interrogating actually. I will be polite to strangers, in person but, not go out of my way to tell anyone my life story. I like giving people THEIR space, so that they will give me MINE. 4) In Poland, if you smile at strangers and strike up conversations with them, you will be thought to be ... CRAZY. No really, as in INSANE. You will be humoured, and smiled at in return but, behind your back, the gossip will fly, the tea will be spilled. Please do not be fooled. Best to be reserved by default. Let people come to you, after they feel that you are approachable and somewhat trustworthy. And, never call anyone by his, or her, first name until you are asked specifically to do so. People are called (very formally!) Pan or Pani (Male or Female) which means Lord and Lady. Everyone does it and even a woman I know, when she calls her (longtime) friend over to talk to me, calls her Pani (Lady). Interesting. 5) I ask everyone to PLEASE take off their shoes when they enter my apartment if they can do so. Most do NOT, but, they know I prefer it nonetheless.

I just, as in now as I watch this video, realized regarding footwear: Yes, we have a strict “shoes off indoors”, and yes, for outside use, practical footwear is the sensible way to go, but if you are invited to somebody’s home, and dress up for the occasion, which is very normal, and you do want to wear nice shoes to go with your outfit, it’s perfectly fine to bring your “nice, indoor shoes” in a bag and change on arrival.

i hear 'how are you doing?' too often as a silly smalltalk thing. and i live in the country. Its seems like a polite thing to ask when havign a conversation with someone. My neurodivergents brain just gets annoyed with it as most people don't actualyl want to know how you're doing. They just ask because they feel they have to :/

I think calling it “small talk” is a misclassification. It’s just a greeting like “hvad så” or “hvordan got det”. I have to say after so many years of people making it a bigger deal than it is, it gets just as annoying having to explain it and have people not accept the meaning haha.

It kinda like, you bump into someone you haven't seen in a while, you say hi, and THEN they usually ask, how are you doing, how is school or what ever else applies. Kinda like talking about hte weather or latest football game. Haven't heard strangers ask anyone how they're doing XD in my 33 years of living here (born in jutland, as danish as they come) have i never heard it used as the actual greeting :P

Bad Advice: 1) If you hear Danish kids use the f-word, correct them, it’s as bad here as it is in the US and parents are cool with you doing that. 2) Be openly religious, it’s a good way to make new friends.

But if not, it will work like a detergent, I dont really care about peoples religion, but dont preach about it, and dont try to force it down my throat. If people only can become friends through religion, then theres something wrong.

I think you are a little harsh on not speaking to stranger thingie. I'm a Dane and I speak to everybody on my way and have no problems or feel is strange, ok, there is the youngs below 20. I think it's the way you do it like in the lineup in the supermarket don't say "Ohh, my son loves these" instead ask " Are they on sale? my son loves them..." Then you can start a conversation with a Dane. Also, in the bus "Ask something about the rute you are going, everybody want to help and feel good". If you can make a Dane feel good like having done a good deal or you can make them share their knowledge then they will be in a conversation with

As a non-EU foreigner seeking permanent residence, if you do decide to get a car, bring your own or just rent one, make sure you exchange your current driver's license for a Danish one within half a year. You may have to spend money on a test depending on where you come from, but that's still better than having the car confiscated and getting slapped with a massive fine.

I was pleasantly surprised when I traded-in my American state license for a Danish/EU license that expires when I reach age 70! Not sure if it is still that way, but was in the late 1980s. Later it came in really handy when I worked for the U.S. government and visited Germany often and rented cars at the airport, the Danish license streamlined the rental process.

@@williamjones4716 The laws regarding expiration dates changed somewhere around 2010, if you get a license (or expand your current one) now, you'll need to get it renewed every 15 years until you reach 70, at which point the renewal period gets shorter.

Harsh. Put like that, Copenhagen does not sound like a very friendly place. Maybe it isn't. I don't think it is so much unfriendlyness as respect for the privacy of others, though. Not that I am sure how to signal that you are open for conversation. Maybe carry a sign "Please talk to me" :-)

Copenhagen is the most expensive city in the World. Some years ago there was a test of which city in the World has the highest price for a cup of coffe. Copenhagen was a clear number one.

The prices in most cafés are insane, yes, but nobody say you have to support them. Prices of normal groceries are in the high end among Western countries, but most of it can be explained by the high median wage.

My problem was trying to convert my college German to Danish, enough similarities to prove confusing, and it ended-up sounding like Plattdeutsch (especially to surrounding Vendelboer).

Oh, and Copenhagen is the absolutely ideal place to purchase real estate compared to rest of Denmark. Apartments and houses are absolutely affordable. Lots of room for everyone.
