Vernon is actually not extreme weather. I lived there for 10 years. Yes, it gets hot in the summer months, sometimes 35 to 40 degrees for a few days in a row, but winter is definitely not cold. It's usually hanging around -5 to -10 and occasionally dips to -20 to -25, however, this is a dessert area far from the ocean so the humidity is very low. It is very dry so you do not feel the cold as much through your clothes. In my opinion this video is intended to thwart foreigners and outsiders from moving to one of the most beautiful regions in Canada. Kalamalka Lake and Okanagan lake begin in Vernon, and these are amazing recreational lakes, great fishing, water skiing, and even jet boating or jet ski... is a complete joy here. This city has the most affordable real estate in the Okanagan valley so you can really keep the cost of living to a minimum. Again this is one of the best little cities to live in within Canada. If you are not sure, then go vacation there for a week first and see if you like it. There's lots to do and traffic is very easy and stress free. Lots of free parking, parks, trails, and amazing views.

My intention is the opposite! We want people to move to Vernon - I'm in the real estate business so of course we want people moving here :) However I do want to give people the straight goods on what to expect.

@@Saltfowler Your video is an innacurate critique of Vernon that dwells on insignificant things like warm summers and cool, but not even cold winters. Everywhere else in the country hits -40 degrees with 6 to 10 feet of snow. There's hardly any snow in Vernon and even -20 for a few days is entirely tolerable in such a dry climate. In other words, nothing to concern about. Summer at 35-40 degrees for a couple weeks per year is completely tolerable especially with such beautiful lakes to go swim and cool off. There are also many cities up and down the valley to visit, explore, and enjoy. Vernon is a great little city to raise a family, better than 90% of the rest of BC. Just be more honest next time and balance your content with proper information. People move there from Alberta where it snows sometimes in July... -40 for a couple months in Edmonton, Calgary... etc... and if you are a foreigner moving there Vernon will seem like paradise by comparison to India or China. Many are forced out of the Lower mainland housing markets and look to the Okanagan for financial relief from extreme taxation and endless fees, parking costs, and overpopulation. Vernon by comparison is wonderful. Just be more honest with your videos and put yourself into a Chinese or Indian persons shoes. There are also plenty of service industry and tourism industry jobs there which drive that economy. Live and work in Vernon or live in Vernon and work in Lake country or kelowna... entirely reasonable. Start a winery, start a small business... invest in a liquor store... plenty of options for Vernon to expand and grown. Most of the people in Vernon are elderly... My mother bought a house there for 120k just a few years ago... what an amazing price compared to 1.8 million for the same house in Vancouver

@@jroceastvan Believe me, I am a huge Vernon fan. If you watch our other videos, you will see all the great things about Vernon - there are so many positives. However these are the negatives from my viewpoint, from a long time Vernon born and raised resident, I cannot speak from the viewpoint of someone coming from the places you suggest as I have not lived that life. I can only share from my experience from living here almost all my life. You are welcome to disagree, however these are the negatives from my perspective which may be different than yours. I thank you for your comments, you sound like a true lover of the Okanagan, which is fabulous!

Sorry. I tapped out during the weather whine. I scrolled along to see the other 4 reason. Okay. Yeah. Sure. Whatever. You missed the absolute most critical reason not to move there that is common to the entire Okanagan. Employment! Unless you are relocating to a government or government funded job or living off your RRSPs, get ready for a harsh Okanagan reality. The character of the job market is grim. If you don't land a bureaucratic government position or have connections with the drug cartels, you will either work in a service industry to the hordes of government employees wandering around or the 3 months of Alberta and Washington tourists. Want to pick fruit? Fill your socks. Want to start a coffee shop and go broke with your Vancouver equity...giver! Going to walk the streets with a resume filled with international business experience? Pack a really big lunch. Or settle for getting your real estate license. I came to the Kelowna from Vancouver 25 years ago with a pocket full of equity and a resume full of business experience. I pissed away hundreds of thousands of dollars on a business idea that failed (like most new ideas in Kelowna) and ended up consulting to my former contacts in Vancouver for the following 20 years. Bitter?? Ummm...yup. It's a long story of a steep local learning curve. Can you drive nails into 2x4s? Smooth out concrete? Can you stomach glad handing with local government officials to win government construction contracts? You're golden. There are enough equity Kings and Queens with fat wallets to fleece arriving in the Okanagan every year to keep the economy rolling. By the way Salt, your map of movement to the Okanagan points at the Chilcotin Plateau. Vernon is tough market. Alexis Creek makes Vernon look like kindergarten track meet.

I lived down the road in Lumby. Now, 25 years ago, Vernon was a beautiful little town. Now, traffic and constant building. Has lost its charm for me. Although I will be visiting family again in a few months. The heat and fires are becoming a serious threat to many communities around Vernon.

Vernon’s downtown is not bad. I use to stop in Vernon on my way through to Kelowna to see my mom. Near the highway It does get hot, and when you’re by the highway it seem like a congested spot. I feel like it’s an odd layed out city, though I’ve never been all around the area.

It's hard for me to say about the layout as I grew up here :). I haven't heard that as a regular comment from folks, however I guess we can get used to things over time. You're right downtown is nice and has been upgraded fairly recently. Lots of cool little shops. Thanks for your comment Kyle!

I once stayed in Vernon, and enjoyed the earls, and the antique shop on the highway, it was great. I think I’m just not use to it. Seems like a huge highway runs through the centre of it, same as Kelowna. I think I’m spoiled, because I live in North Vancouver, and our highway skirts where I live. I haven’t seen the refurnished downtown. My moms moved from Kelowna so I won’t be going through there anytime soon. Though I’m a guy who likes Geology, and would like to check out the Opals of Vernon, I haven’t done that yet. When I was a kid back in the 80s my mom had baseball tournaments there. I definitely didn’t mind Vernon.☺️
