In dynasty warriors 4, he does say something about avoiding Lu Bu, you have to wait around for a bit though. Your allies will be catching up by then, so it's a bit easier

Dynasty Warriors 4 was the one that introduced me to the series and to this day its remained my favorite in the series. Just so you know, Yuan Shao tells you to "Ignore Lu Bu, Pursue Dong Zhou!" When his army arrives at Hu Lao Gate. Its possible to miss the voice line since it only triggers once he reaches the gate, and he doesnt begin his charge until Hu Lao Gate is breached, and then it takes him about 2 or 3 minutes to reach the gate.

We started at Dynasty Warriors 3, back in the day me and my friends called the red life meter to musou, run away and repeat strategy - "Run like a B1tcht". We always had a blast.

I miss the old DW's , the PS 2 golden age, where it felt like you where just a part of the army, and had to work together with your force to secure victory instead of the solo victory lap it later became. In DW 2, the army can even route the entire map of the first Yellow Turban stage all by itself when you do nothing, though they are unable to land the killing blow on the boss.

DW6 downfall was all the weapon changes. Some Characters had iconic weapons and they changed them. Like Lu Bu as the biggest example

Man, seeing Zhang Liao with the guan dao hit me with the nostalgia bat so hard.

I've fought against Lu Bu in DW2 on normal. He's hard. In fact, he won't even flinch at the first few attacks you throw at him, and he'll kill you in a few hits.

My first encounter with Lu Bu was basically this; None of the characters names stood out to me yet because I was new to the franchise and everyone's name mostly blended together to my eyes/ears so I mostly ignored what officers screamed because I didn't know who was talking to whom. I choose Dian Wei (I called him Dawn Wayne) because his name stood out just enough that I knew if someone was talking to or about me. Put a lot of time into this character over the series and is kind of a favorite because of it. Doesn't hurt that he looks cool in most iterations as well. Anyway, I had like 80% of my health when I approached some guy (Lu Bu) and I knocked him over with a jump attack. He then did the same thing to me getting up and I died instantly. I had put in some grind up to this point and I'm half sure I was playing on Easy too and I was like 30+ minutes into the level to slow roll my way through the levels (as intended?). Oof; So you learn the name Lu Bu and avoid him until you're a much higher level. Eventually you get a feel for how strong you need to be at minimum to attempt nearing Lu Bu because you can absolutely cheese him. Generally the Shin Musou adds that burning damage which is a majority of where the damage comes from in certain games. I can't believe how much of this franchise I've played but I started to steer away from it when they made their Renbu system version and kind of ruined all my favorite characters and everyone had the same 4 weapons. :(

Defeating Lu Bu is always a heck of an achievement in the old Dynasty Warriors games.

Honestly if AI didn't slow the game down to a crawl the idea of the NPC units being able to overwhelm you because you're in too deep into enemy lines is a great idea that should be explored further. Maybe if you make the commanding troops more active. Like commanding characters to attack a fort or reinforce a location to move enemy troops away from where you are so your units can push harder into lighter defended places and so lower morale. Though I don't think I can trust Koei tecmo to get the balance and mechanics right.

This has turned out to be a very interesting experiment! What I appreciate about the Warriors series more with years is the opportunities to replay the same events in different games, looking at them from slightly different perspectives and angles every time. Hence, I've found this video so satisfying!

Beating Lu Bu with a Level 7 character on Dynasty Warriors Vol. 2 on a beginner character with low level officers. Like it's actually a very satisfying achievement and I bloody love doing that. I always play on the hardest difficulty for the "Fuck around and find out.".

Funny thing is... There is a way to kind of cheese lu bu in 4... if you manage to knock him up, you can perpetually lock him up there if you can time it right.

My first DW was DW3. It's still my favourite and to me it has the hardest Lu Bu challenge of them all. That game had ragdoll physics like crazy and he loved to use them. Plus, even with a True Musou attack, he was still hyper armoring most hits.

I started with 4 not knowing what i was doing besides just run around and hit stuff. I was like 4 or 5. When i first fought lu bu and saw how much in 1 hit my health drained i got scared and screamed a little. My dad looked over and said "Lu Bu?" And i said yes. He just laughed and said Good luck.

DW6 has grapple moves that make Lu Bu flinch, IIRC you hit one of your attack buttons while blocking... It's how I remember dealing with him, took forever though

So. This is going to sound really funny to hardcore fans lol My first encounter with Lu Bu was in Dynasty Warrior's Advance where he appears at level 10 on the very first Level of the Wu and Shu stories. You are level 1. I didn't know you could retreat from battles as a kid so, I got stuck on Hu Lao Gate because of a Lu Bu for like Hour's. He's unreasonably OP in this because the combat is so simple, you can't block his attacks, he has a weapon with Fire Damage on it and almost every hit from him knocks you down. Luckily in the Shu Version your supposed to basically just stall and retreat from him, in the Wu version he will usually ignore the player in favor of your allies but you can still end up in his way and then he'll actively pursue you. And no, there isn't a line saying "DO NOT Pursue Lu Bu." Edit: It's also plausible that if your REALLY bad, like I was as a kid, Lu Bu just plows through all your forces on the Wu Side before you can even reach the end and cause you to lose lol Damn being a kid and bad at games is hilarious.

About pursuing Lu Bu on DW2 and hearing your reasons of lowering difficulty, and putting aside my bit of disappointment, I fully understand your point. I am happy that you would come back to DW2 to pursue Lu Bu again with Standard Difficulty.

Oh man this is a blast from the past I didn't expect to find tonight. Man I almost completely forgot about Dynasty Warrior's 2 bodyguard feature. That was one of those small things that made tiny me feel like a commander. This must be a sign that I must pursue, Lu Bu. It's the only way. THIS HAS BEAM MORE ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE INTO MY BRAIN, I JUST REMEMBERED MYSTIC HEROES. I'm going to dissolve into dust now.

A fine video and a good look back at the entirety of the series as well. I hold many of the same opinions as you. DW4 is by far the hardest and, in my opinion, the most iconic Lu Bu fight. He challenges you to a duel in which you have almost no chance of winning, and only surviving by the skin of your teeth. If you then decide to fight him afterwards its best to keep allied officers away from him as he will drill through them like they're paper.

I love low level soldier aggression, it makes the game more interesting and harder instead of just rushing to boss kill him, then rush to another one

Lu Bu really was the original Him. The low health musou trick was always the way to go, especially on higher difficulties. I think 4 was truly the peak, the duel system was so fun. Still had bodyguards and your custom character could be used to play the story. Just so airtight imo. Great video!

My friend and I did in fact pursue Lu Bu in DW 5. It was the first time we saw him and we looked at each other and thought yeah right we're kicking ass. We were playing on normal almost done with the map and he just smacked me a couple of times and I died. We were speachless and thats when officially he became my favorite character.

DW2 was one the first games i got for PS2 as a kid . my friend cheese Lu Bu buy running in circles and using the bow. it took for ever the first time to beat him. Also to this day we still say ITS ITS LU BUUUUUU

My favourite fact about DW1 being such a different game is that it's the reason why the japanese titles always seem to be 1 number behind. While the english titles continued the numbering after DW1, the japanese titles appended 真 ("Shin" meaning "True") to the beginning, thus always being 1 number behind.

I’ll always remember the battle of Hulao gate encounter with Lu Bu from DW4, that defined the entire character for me then and there when I was a kid, I honestly miss a lot of the more subtler difficulties of Warriors games from back then, as well as the emphasis on pushing up with your armies on the various frontline conflicts of the map.

In DW4 they introduced a counter attack (hold guard, press triangle right before the enemy swing lands) this grants you an unblock able attack that will knock down all enemies including officers trying to grab you. This will chip down every in game enemy.

Banger video honestly; DW4 was my starting point and I was scared of Lu Bu for years after lol. That being said, I'd probably have tried this challenge with Guan Yu, since I think his fighting style's changed the least between games. When I saw you pick Xiahou Dun, I knew 6 was gonna be a problem if only because of his insane weapon change.

I randomly played a DW2 demo on a ps2 demo disc and was obsessed. Went out and bought the DW3 game as soon as i saved up 40$ from chores. I played so much DW3. Every character. All the time. Lu bu was a monster and the voice acting was so fun. I loved that game. Sadly none of the other DW games really come close to 3. I hated 4 and 5 was okay (mainly due to DW Empires). But I stopped playing them later on as they kept getting worse.

DW 4 was my first DW game and I also ended up facing Lu Bu with Xiahou Dun so it was cool seeing you using the same guy. I think maybe I waited longer to go after Lu Bu though bc I fought him within the castle grounds. It was pouring rain and only two men were left, my commander and I vs the legend. It was an extremely cinematic experience with the two of us desperately struggling to keep him in check. Im barely hanging on with a sliver of red, my musou bar recharging but with my commanders life (and the mission) on the line, I couldn't afford to run. I had to go crazy blocking, aggroing, running and interrupting with musou attacks. All while rain poured around us and smothered the bodies of all our fallen comrades. Not having some kind of cool final blow for such a monstrous battle seemed like a anticlimactic, missed opportunity for DW4 though. That one battle alone secured my cash for the next four DW games, though. Was such a great experience.

My first game was 4, but I've gone back as far as 3, and even to this day, the name "Lu Bu" continues to instill a certain kind of fear in me that I can't explain. Even if he's CONSIDERABLY easier in the newer games. It's been ingrained into to me for so many years and I still can't escape it. That being said, I still remember this one time when I was a kid... I had a dream about Lu Bu picking me up from school on the back of Red Hare. He jumped over the gate, approached and when I climbed up onto the horse, everyone was incredibly jealous of me. lol Lu Bu scared the shit out of me, yet made me dream about him a lot. I'm not sure what that says about me. (':

I remember playing Dynasty Warriors 4 with my 2 cousins and getting a "4th" weapon for the first time ever (We were playing since Dynasty 2) on Guan Yu. We immediately loaded up Hu Lao Gate and I squared up against Lu Bu in one of the most epic fights I ever had. I was almost on paar with him, becauase my attacks finally made him flinch. I say almost, because I had to heal once, but that was sooo epic nevertheless. I never cared much about character progression, but that was sooo rewarding, also due to how iconic Lu Bu was, when testing it.

The only Dinasty Warriors I played was 4 as a relatively young kid in a friend's house. We were TERRIFIED of Lu Bu, we would run away from him on sight. We also were extremely disappointed when we unlocked him as a playable character and felt he was underwhelming, since, as the small kids that we were, we assumed playing with him had to be basically like having cheats on.

From a largely outsider perspective (my experience with DW/Musou largely stems from DW7 and the Hokuto Musou games), it's really interesting to see how this one moment across each game manages to feel like an absolute microcosm of their respective titles, be it for better or worse. Absolutely fun watch, 10/10, would love to see you cover equally interesting topics regarding this series.

I feel so validated by this list! I spent so many retries in my childhood playing this map and fighting Lu Fengxian on DW 4, I learned really fast to never accept Lu Bu's challenge.

My first game introducing me to the series was dw4. Got to the part where I am told not to pursue Lu Bu. Like any logical gamer, I pursued Lu Bu. Promptly followed by “Lu Bu please stop pursuing me”. Needless to say I was sweating bullets every time I looked back. Great times, great memorable times.

Dynasty Warriors 4 has Yuan Shao saying something along the lines of: “Forget about Lu Bu! Go after Dong Zhuo!” or something like that….

My brother, sister, and i always played on normal or hard mode. We loved the challenge. Especially Lu Bu. I miss the peons providing more of a challenge in the earlier games.

DW2: hit him three times so he's not knocked down DW6: whack him from a horse DW7: in Wu/Shu's version, he stands in front of the gate and flees if his health gets low. In Wei's version, he appears after the gate is broken down and lunges after Yuan Shao. So, he essentially flees from the two Hua Xiong killers and not Xiahou Yuan.

On the early DW games you should try the fire arrows, makes it easy, fire arrows + charge shot = stun and on fire. get ready to shoot again right as he stops being stunned and repeat. You can easily lock him down when you get the timing right. and when you musou charged use to juggle him when he's on fire too.

I played these games religiously when they were new on PS2, and never thought about them again. 25 years later on some random morning, I learn “Cao Cao” wasn’t pronounced with a hard “C” this whole time.

Cao Cao says "Do not pursue Lu Bu" word for word in DW8, but in the "Escape from Luoyang" stage.

#4 is still my favorite in the series. When that came out is when my brother and I fell in love with the series.

My older brother had a totally different approach in DW2. He beat Lu Bu by spamming arrows from a distance and idk if it was a glitch, but he wouldn’t get chased down. It took forever, but it is what it is 😅

Back in 2003, I was 12, played DW4 on PS2.. I cried when Lu Bu chased me 😂😂😂😂, .. resident evil 3 nemesis gives me nightmare when I sleep... Ahhh the good ol' PS2 era...

They said that, he beat me, then I took it personally. It is always my mission to beat him. Even in 4 Empires where you can duel him 1v1 on the hardest difficulty. Did it fair and square, meaning I didn’t look out the arena with my bow to let my musou charge up then attack him with a musou attack. I actually fought him with Liu Bei’s weapon. I did it since my friends told me I couldn’t. I believe I have it record on a VHS somewhere.

When I was 8 years old, playing as Xiahou Dun to fight Lu Bu in DW 4 was a nightmare and especially in the DUEL. But as I got older, I found that you can counter attack on enemies so that makes it a little easier to fight Lu Bu. Same goes for DW 6.

If you wanted a tougher fight in Dynasty Warriors 8, then you need to ignore Lu Bu, and instead defeat Diao Chan first. This will make Lu Bu really mad, gets tons of buffs, and hunting you down like a rabid dog throughout the whole map until you die.

Dynasty Warriors 2 is up there as one of the best for me. The difficulty is what i loved about it, made every soldier kill meaningful, like you were actually thinning the army for yours to advance

I'm glad DW4 took 1st place in this video. It's not only because of all the facts you mention are true, there's also one part that made him more dangerous: The grapple attack. That game was the first to have this simple feature added in combat and Lu Bu's grapple attack was overkill. Even if you jump to avoid his grapple, his weapon could still knock you out of the air and right when you get back up he'll swing his long ass weapon in time to damage you good.

Dynasty Warriors 3 was the first game I've played but I was too young to remember. DW4 is the one that made me cry and panic everytime Lu Bu appeared. He haunted my dreams literally and that battle was a big struggle

I played 3 first as a teen, but 4 is the one that’s close to my heart. 4 also has Lu Bu’s best theme imo, that intro is just plain menacing and does a great job of building up this fight.

The instant you said "I had to drop the difficulty down to easy", I immediately said out lout "Someone got fucked up by DW2 Arrowbois." Goddamn that was the MOST frustrating part of trying to progress through that game. Live and die by the insane packs of archers scattered everywhere. Mt. Jing Dun / Hard+ still gives me nightmares all these years later.
